Tasted by Richard Nabavi on 10/28/2023: Decanted for a short time. There was a fair bit of ullage, and the cork disintegrated on opening.

I've had this wine many times over the last thirty years, and at its peak it was excellent. This bottle was still enjoyable, but clearly very much in decline. The colour remains reasonably deep, but it's a brownish-red hue now. There was a certain slightly disagreeable mustiness initially, but this dissipated after a few minutes, leaving a sound but faded old claret.

Clearly one should expect a lot of bottle variation for a wine of this age, but if you can find a good example, this wine should still give pleasure. (335 views)
Tasted by vintage_whine on 1/12/2022: Bandaids, smoke, Islay scotch, pure red fruit, luminous in fruit character. Precise and just at the last peak of glory. Tannins resolved but silky. Very much still alove for 3 hours before we tanked it (1562 views)
Tasted by ohne_musik on 7/23/2021 & rated 93 points: Berserker Offline (Mathilde Bistro - SF): Really pure and fresh, way younger than a 51 year old wine should be, especially compared to the 70 Mouton last month, which was "acting it's age". Crystalline red fruit, stony Graves soil, and tobacco. While not as complex as the other well aged bdx of the night (89/90 VCC, 85 Magdelaine), it carries an effortless purity that is enrapturing – if a red wine could be a limpid mountain spring, this would be it. I find myself repeatedly going back to the glass to experience it. (2162 views)
Tasted by David Paris (dbp) on 9/6/2020: No formal notes... from memory. The wine was only stood up for 1 day in advance (which was enough to leave just 1/2" in the bottom, and sediment free pours) and slow-o'ed for 5 hours before pouring. The color was quite pretty and mostly red, with really just a slight hint of bricking. Aromas were well defined and fruity, with a palate showing pretty soil tones and incredible acidity that carried long into the finish. Just a slight bit of old leaves on the finish, but mostly the acid kept this wine feeling fairly exuberant and young. (2584 views)
Tasted by mclanew on 11/8/2019 & rated 93 points: One and half hour decant. This is a lovely fully mature old bordeaux. The nose is classic plums, pencil shavings, and tobacco weed. The palate is a complex kaleidoscope of flavors including red currant, blackberries, cigar box, leather and herbs. Lovely balance and holding up well where I can see it staying in this zone for a while. (3053 views)
Tasted by sdr on 11/5/2019 & rated 87 points: Obituary: 1970 Bordeaux: From magnum. Interesting due to the aged complexity and Graves character. Perhaps the large format helped preserve it. Although clearly faded, there’s enough stuffing here to almost enjoy half a glass although you won’t ask for a refill. (3268 views)
Tasted by DaleW on 6/26/2018: Probably on the downhill slope, but what an elegant older lady. Fully resolved tannins, good acid, red fruits, lots of earth, a little tobacco and leather. Not the longest finish at this point, but still a delight. A-/B+ (3369 views)
Tasted by jal on 6/5/2018 & rated 88 points: Terra Cotta color, a little earth and cedar on the nose, but a lot of VA as well, lingering acidity makes it unpleasant at first but it then opens up nicely with some good complexity. However it doesn't last long as the fruit is fading and the wine falls apart eventually. A fascinating progression in about 45 minutes, this bottle should have probably been opened fifteen years ago. (3014 views)
Tasted by Pop Walker on 12/27/2017 & rated 88 points: Sadly, tasted after it had been in a decanter for 2 days and was advised that it had lost some 'freshness'! Red/brown colour, earthy nose. I was surprised how round it was and still some fruit even out of the bottle for so long. Still very pleasant to drink taste of plum, slight caramel. This wine is a fine example of the longevity of well made wine. (2925 views)
Tasted by William Kelley on 8/28/2016 & rated 92 points: The 1970 Pape Clément is very attractive, especially from magnum, blossoming in the decanter (recommended) and glass to reveal a complex bouquet of red and black fruit, cedar, dark truffle, loamy soil and cigar ash. On the palate the wine is vibrant, juicy and quite intense, structured around a core of bright but not shrill 1970 acidity and fine, mostly melted tannins. Really creditable. (5540 views)
Tasted by salil on 2/25/2016 & rated 87 points: Bordeaux night (West Hartford, CT): Pleasant but clearly on the downslope. There's still some gentle red fruit at the core framed by savoury earthy, smoky, and faintly leathery notes, though not a whole lot of freshness. Pleasant for an hour or so, but it starts to fade with more air. (5600 views)
Tasted by Billigan on 7/18/2015 flawed bottle: Dead as a door nail. (4251 views)
Tasted by anonymoose12345 on 12/13/2014 & rated 88 points: Light rust color. Over the hill, out of balance, hot finish. (4576 views)
Tasted by Mad Dog Mikey on 7/10/2014 & rated 93 points: Surprisingly youthful in color and taste - had it blind and would never had guessed what it was. Had it on its own ..very robust, would probably have had enjoyed it more with food. Many thanks to Pontet Pete for this surprise! (4979 views)
Tasted by johnh1001 on 6/8/2014 & rated 89 points: Consistent with the last bottle, although this was slightly deeper. (3705 views)
Tasted by d'Yquembe Mutombo on 6/3/2014 & rated 88 points: Restaurant purchase. The somm told us that she has seen some bottle variation and this was one of the better ones.

Starts off with a rich nose of manure, cedar, dry cigar tobacco and dried berries. Very nice to smell. The palate is a mix of the same secondary/tertiary notes but accompanied by a nice core of red cherry fruit and anise. The anise began to present in the nose as the wine evolved. Lacks oomph on the midpalate and finish.

This was fun to drink and is not over the hill. More air time may have helped as the wine did continue to improve for the hour or so we had it open. Not a life-changing mature bordeaux experience but considering the price paid for a well-stored 40+ year old bottle, I'm happy. (3320 views)
Tasted by Anders Danielsen Lie on 11/28/2013 & rated 89 points: morken kork; diskret åpen nese med tørket frukt, kaffe, tobakk, lær og edelt tre. Jordlig og mineralsk. Åpner opp betydelig i glasset. Preg av våt bark som gjør at man kunne tatt dette for en moden brunello. Middels fyldig med flott syre og fortsatt ganske markante tanniner. Holdt seg godt, men på vei nedover. Delikat bordeaux som krever oppmerksomhet. Kjøpt på Chambers st i New York. (2922 views)
Tasted by johnh1001 on 10/29/2013 & rated 88 points: Very nice, but on its way down. Carmel, red fruit, old wood and leather. A bit short and choppy on the finish. Interesting. (3081 views)
Tasted by sunnyjam on 2/19/2012 & rated 92 points: Excellent, last bottle... (4409 views)
Tasted by aquaman on 1/29/2012 & rated 93 points: P n pour.. Taste from glass.. Smells good when first pour.. Swore in glass but fading on the nose.taste is light n no heat n tannise. About 30-40 window. Then the tannise start to creep in.. I let it stand for one week to settle down and did not decante but in open bottle only. (4258 views)
Tasted by ylkim30 on 10/1/2011: Really good. The nose is subtle upon opening and is initially a little too screechy and volatile upon opening. But, after slow-oxing for three hours, everything integrates. The nose blossoms and becomes fragrant with dark fruit and a little leather. The wine itself is vinous, with pronounced minerality and earthiness. The tannins have almost completely resolved, leaving a little bitterness on the finish. It also has classic weightlessness in the mouth while also being intensely flavorful. (4645 views)
Tasted by pc.jams on 10/9/2010: Delightful. A true pleasure to drink. Bright fruits. A hint of tannin. Continually opening up in the decanter. Absolutely no reason to pass on a bottle if you find it in good condition. Classic, balanced, beautiful. This particular bottle was anything but drying out. Lucious and succulent fruit filled the palate from front to end. (4700 views)
(4436 views)
Tasted by gasman on 2/20/2010 & rated 90 points: Bricking at the rim. Good ruby color. All cedar and tobacco. Not much fruit. A pleasant bottle. (3526 views)
Tasted by Keith Levenberg on 8/11/2009 & rated 92 points: Poured next to the '70 Haut-Brion which I thought would be an interesting comparison as there are a few vintages where Pape Clément would come out on top. Not so here, but this is still a beautiful Pape Clément. It starts off with the same rusty and smoky scent as the Haut-Brion but as they diverge this one gets more dominantly stony and minerally. The first sip is an instant reminder of what I love about old, finally mature Bordeaux. It's so tender on the entry it's practically buttery in its smoothness but it develops a coarser grittiness as you toss it around the mouth. Anywhere except next to the Haut-Brion this would strike you as an almost ideal claret, but HB has a way of outclassing things. (4153 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
