Tasted by gharter on 7/10/2022 & rated 92 points: From a Magnum. A little tight when first opened. Needed about 30 minutes to open up. Blackberry, spice, tobacco, earth, cassis on the nose. More black fruit, cassis, spice, earth, cedar, anise flavors. smooth, soft tannins in a medium finish. A group favorite. (1017 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 10/23/2021 & rated 93 points: 4th Saturday Group: Uptown Brown Bag (MM’s): Double blind. A little high toned to start. Notes of currants, red plum and just a touch of something along the lines of rhubarb. Becomes more dark-fruited in the bouquet as this sits, also adding herb and mint notes. Black fruit dominates the palate, with soft tannins and a lingering finish. Guessed 10-12 year old Napa cab. (MM) (1792 views)
Tasted by gharter on 6/22/2020 & rated 91 points: Tight when first opened. Needed about 30-60 minutes to open up. Blackberry, spice, tobacco, earth, cassis on the nose. More black fruit, cassis, spice, earth, cedar, anise flavors. smooth, soft tannins in a medium finish. Holding well. My last bottle, but would be in no hurry to open another. (1753 views)
Tasted by knelsfk on 1/4/2019 & rated 91 points: Earth and ripe fruit aromas; restrained fruit with soft tannins; an aged cabernet ready to drink. (2199 views)
Tasted by barrytaylor on 12/10/2017 & rated 93 points: dark color. leather & cigar box. ready (2664 views)
Tasted by joraesque on 1/27/2017 & rated 91 points: Starts opening up after 30 minutes, reaching its sweet spot about 100 minutes in, then heading downhill 30 minutes later. Notes of black cherries, licorice, and some dry herbs. Good pairing with blue cheese, red meat, and herbs de Provence. 14.2% ABV. (2864 views)
Tasted by RichardP on 7/27/2016 & rated 89 points: Camphor on the nose. On the palate, at first this showed black cherry, raspberry, and vanilla, with faint notes of bitter tobacco and something green; the tannins are fully resolved, and the acidity is fairly strong, but not out of balance. On the second day, the vanilla had disappeared, but the sour green note had become more noticeable. This should hold for at least a few more years. It's good, but other vintages are better.  Tasted by amoryb on 12/5/2015: Drank really well with a steak last night. Very muted fruit in the middle and a bit of power left on the finish but not a huge wine at this point in time. (3381 views)
Tasted by BklynNeophyte on 11/23/2015 & rated 91 points: Tasted alongside the 2001 Ladera Howell Mountain. Very nice wine, a bit richer than the Ladera and a bit less complex. Coravined on November 23; opened on December 28. Beautiful wine over the December evening. Highly recommended, and the richness dissipated over time, leaving a nicely refined cabernet to enjoy. (2902 views)
Tasted by Geoff on 6/7/2015 & rated 92 points: Nice solid Napa cab. Still young with plenty of fruit and tannins. (3090 views)
Tasted by hsacks on 4/21/2015 & rated 92 points: Same as the 11/19/13 bottle. (2467 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 10/4/2014 & rated 92 points: Nose: There is a balanced richness to the nose with dark red cherries, vanilla, chocolate, licorice, and some mint tones. There is excellent depth with good balance too.

Taste: Full bodied with noticeable tannins. The tannins are a bit stern, perhaps showing off the vintage, but the feel is very balanced with dark red cherries, licorice, chocolate, mint, and a touch of herbs on the back end.

Overall: This is a cab that has plenty of time left. It had about 2 hours of air and the tannins are far from resolved. (2727 views)
Tasted by patwjr on 4/27/2014 & rated 92 points: P&p'd a 375. Nice start, then over 1-2 hours opened to reveal nose of tobacco, subtlety sweet red & blue fruits, forest floor, a hint of eucalyptus. Drinking it revealed the same beautiful blend. Drink now, though 750's could last another year or two. (3034 views)
Tasted by BklynNeophyte on 4/5/2014 & rated 87 points: This bottle a bit rich for my taste, at least tonight. Enjoyed previous bottles more. (2790 views)
Tasted by cjsavino on 1/5/2014 & rated 92 points: Initially very muted, after an hour decant the tannins are lively, the fruit is coming through in a nice balance. On the palate a bit of dried fig, mushroom, thyme, and a bit of soy. (3161 views)
Tasted by pa81 on 12/28/2013 & rated 92 points: Excellent. Mature and nicely rounded wine. A bit tight when first poured, but it was great after 1-2 hour decant. Nice dark purple color with a pleasant bouquet of red berries and earth and subtle sweet red fruit flavors that were nicely balanced with the solid structure.

All four wine drinkers at the table thought it was great. (2640 views)
Tasted by amoryb on 11/27/2013: With a good burger and fried potatoes. Drink up. Red fruit taking over. Tannins resolved. On the edge of being out of balance. (2597 views)
Tasted by hsacks on 11/19/2013 & rated 92 points: Same as the 10/9/11 bottle except a touch richer and more complex. (2048 views)
Tasted by rbfleming on 9/4/2013 & rated 92 points: Beautiful. Mature, rounded, excellent body/structure. Blackberries, tobacco, earthy notes. (2471 views)
Tasted by patwjr on 3/3/2013 & rated 92 points: P&p'd a 375. Tight at first, then over 1-2 hours opened to reveal nose of tobacco, subtlety sweet red & blue fruits, forest floor, a hint of eucalyptus. Drinking it revealed the same beautiful blend. (3310 views)
Tasted by BklynNeophyte on 2/7/2013 & rated 90 points: Nice, balanced. Consistent with prior notes.

4 on the AF scale. (3197 views)
Tasted by craigi on 1/13/2013 & rated 94 points: Magnum. Decanted for an hour, consumed in the fabulous Schott Enotica glass. Ruby-slipper red under the lights. Dark fruits and pipe tobacco on the nose. Raspberries and cherry compote leads to sour dried cherry finish that's oh so long and silky smooth. I love the fact that this wine is so earthy yet so balanced -- it's clear winemaker Trujillo isn't overworking the wine in the lab like so many of the artificially filtered and chemically altered wines that seem to be the trend these days. But wait -- isn't this the much-maligned 2003 vintage? I must find more of this... 750s are ready to go now, but this mag has so much more to offer... (3577 views)
Tasted by BklynNeophyte on 12/25/2012 & rated 90 points: Very excellent cabernet and thoroughly enjoyable.

4 on the AF scale. (3045 views)
Tasted by BklynNeophyte on 12/19/2012 & rated 91 points: A delicious wine. Lots of fruit, but complex. Tannins are resolved and best to drink now.

4 on the AF scale. (2781 views)
Tasted by jkline on 12/18/2012 & rated 85 points: Too rich and over extracted. Just not my cup of tea. (2531 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
