Tasted by heathenone@msn.com on 2/21/2024 & rated 93 points: 2 hours after a double decant, and some some in a glass, this wine was singing! Beautiful full deep color, followed by dark berries on the nose, and more dark berrries, pencil lead, and with some christmas spice on the palate. Palate was full bodied, and went great with the Rib eye and the pasta/bolognese sauce at Ca Dario Montecito. Still has years to go. The goup enjoyed it and rated it in the middle of the pack of 10 wines. (300 views)
Tasted by andtheodor on 1/9/2023 & rated 94 points: Gorgeous, same as 11/15/21 note. (1293 views)
Tasted by UFGators on 10/2/2022 & rated 95 points: Took a little bit of decanting to get this going but once it did it really showed well. The nose is reminiscent of Margaux. Silky mothfeel with lots of red fruit and a medium plus finish. This wine drinks in the sweet spot now. (1430 views)
Tasted by pavel_p on 8/26/2022 & rated 92 points: Pnp. In neck / bottom neck fill - perfect bottle. Was excited to try this, I like Sammarco and this is the highest rated mature vintage by Galloni who gave it a 97 points in 2015. Fairly youthful and dark garnet in the glass. The Cab dominates the nose with its deep dark fruit. On the palate incredibly smooth and silky, lacks just a bit aromatics and depth in my eyes for an even higher score but very good for sure. Integrated tannins. Short to medium finish. Seems just a touch past peak in my eyes - would drink up. 92 (1576 views)
Tasted by andtheodor on 11/15/2021 & rated 94 points: Even though this has only a small percentage of Sangiovese, it shines through with some higher toned perfume, dried flowers, incense smoke. This is how I prefer my super tuscans - Sangio adorned by Cabernet which provides a gravelly, tobacco-laced underpinning for the Italian side to shine. Plenty of depth, fruit, and power but seems like it's on a good plateau now. Beautiful. (2280 views)
Tasted by rnellans on 10/30/2020 & rated 92 points: Dark fruits..pretty structured...lacks complexity...a bit unbalanced. Not as good as last bottle. (2756 views)
Tasted by Decanting Queen on 6/13/2020 & rated 94 points: My favorite of the night. This is in the perfect drinking window. Dark fruits, plenty of complexity, balanced tannins and acid. Less overwhelming than I find some of the big IGT’s—I really like the way it has mellowed so well with bottle age. (3700 views)
Tasted by phynes on 12/14/2019 & rated 91 points: A wine that I suspect is slightly passed its best but still enjoyable to drink. Something funky, earthy, wet wood on the nose and a palate that offered a complex range of flavours but little in the way of fruit, followed by a moderate finish. “Mellow” is a good adjective for this wine. I have three bottles left and will aim to drink them in the next 12 months. (2589 views)
Tasted by mclanew on 6/15/2019 & rated 96 points: What an impressive majestic wine. Slow oxed for three hours. Medium garnet with limited bricking the wine sports a spectacular nose of red currant, rose and tobacco. The palate likewise has a terrific inner core of red and black fruits including red berries, plums, tobacco and herbs in a complex medium bodied wine. The only minor shortcoming is the finish which was a little pinched. This wine is fully mature but should hold for at least another five years. (2765 views)
Tasted by Italiana on 8/1/2018: Absolutely incredible bottle. Everything in place and just right. And I must say a fantastic value for the pleasure it delivers. (2914 views)
Tasted by jre327 on 2/7/2018: Does not need much breathing time (2781 views)
Tasted by Goldstone on 1/20/2018 & rated 90 points: A magnum decanted for 2 hours. Deep opaque purple-crimson in colour. A very rounded and gently perfumed nose. Palate is velvety and perfectly resolved. Very good reverberance in the head but a bit of alcoholic heat on the swallow. A very mellow and enjoyable wine that is fully at peak or just starting to slip...unfortunately, it lacks any wow factor. (2655 views)
Tasted by Vinnut on 7/17/2017 & rated 92 points: Deep, dark garnet in color with some bricking & clearing at the edges. Full, forward, & fragrant nose of ripe fruit aromas of dark cherries, blueberries & currants with overtones of floral, earthy/dusty notes, some cigar box notes of cedar & tobacco, olives, leather, dried savory herbs, cocoa, vanilla & oak undertones in the background. Medium bodied with a good concentration of balanced & smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of dark cherries, blackberries & plums with earthy, cocoa, spices, herbs, minerals & some vanilla & oak. Lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present and it is at or close to its peak of development although it should remain in this condition for a few more years if cellared properly. (3047 views)
Tasted by canan on 7/7/2017 & rated 95 points: 4 Mini Vertical Tastings (Sammarco, Togni, Conseillante, Palmer) (MG): Lovely cherry/plum flavor with some rose petals but also a harsh tannin structure and a lot of acidity.
Very intense and only slightly developed flavors. Long aftertaste. Impressive wine. (3407 views)
Tasted by renoprof on 12/23/2016 & rated 94 points: A great wine. Still has a few years left. Drank aside an 89 Dunn Howell. (2766 views)
Tasted by ubercuvee on 3/5/2016 & rated 95 points: Fab. (3488 views)
Tasted by lesz on 1/23/2016 & rated 93 points: We all enjoyed this probably not at peak. (3234 views)
Tasted by nortonnose on 12/23/2015 & rated 93 points: Very consistent with my previous showings - yay :) Closer to the recent showing than last December's show stopper.

Stood 750ml for months, PnP. Once again, initial must/tart/funk dissipated in minutes; every sip improved through the last drop. A bit more bricking color to this one. Still fresh and vibrant, impressive youthfulness - shocking for this at age 25. Lovely nose of lavender and rose. The palate is so subtle - seemingly simple, a kiss of simple sweetness on the attack but wonderfully balanced bright red fruit with fine acidity. Merry Christmas! (2874 views)
Tasted by Neecies on 10/22/2015: Claret-like, showing mostly red fruit (it's principally cabernet sauvignon with a minor sangiovese component). Fully mature with excellent a sweet entry, good concentration and excellent balance. Showed some cocoa on the long finish. Probably would have been swooning, but it suffered for the 100 pt showing of a flawless '85 Sassicaia in the glass next door. (3023 views)
Tasted by nortonnose on 7/24/2015 & rated 93 points: I absolutely adore this wine. Tonight's wasn't as spectacular as that bottle in Dec, but very beautiful. Stood 750ml for months, slow ox-ed briefly, then poured a touch (from the outset, it wasn't tight as much as it was awkward) and decanted the rest and slowly savored. I was slightly concerned: this cork had pushed out a few cm, expanding the capsule. Initial must/tart/funk dissipated after 15-20 minutes; every sip improved through the last drop. Still very little bricking to the deep crimson color, almost shocking at age 25. Lovely nose of lavender and rose. The palate is so subtle - seemingly simple but wonderfully balanced bright red fruit with fine acidity. Well stored bottles of this are GOLD, Jerry! (3023 views)
Tasted by Herb K on 1/21/2015: This is also an under-rated wine... The "Sammarco" single vineyard version really makes a difference. You pay for what you get! (2569 views)
Tasted by nortonnose on 12/16/2014 & rated 95 points: How long do you have to listen here!? Dear God. To my palate, this showed just beyond gorgeously. When I bought them, I had a small fear that I was overpaying for what is in the bottle. Allegedly cellared since release, and having always loved this wine (albeit in far younger vintages), I was eager to add a few back vintages, particularly since there seems to be very little of it. Stood 750ml for a week. Slow ox-ed briefly, then decanted and served with homemade penne and a farm-fresh beef ragu. Just heavenly. I'm stunned that this is 85% Cab/15% Sangiovese, because the deep, beautiful, tart cherry components of this lead you to believe that it's far more Sangiovese in soul than just the 15% of reality. After about 90 minutes, you start to realize it's a Cab-blend from Tuscany. Before then, you're just simply in heaven on Italian earth. One of the very best wines I've tried all year - wish I could find more! (2702 views)
Tasted by S_stas on 8/2/2013 & rated 93 points: The color has changed to a very brick rim, with a ruby center. Clear, bright appearance was very nice for almost 25 years old. On the nose there was a lot going on including cigar tobacco, cedar, rose, and maybe some raw leather aspects. The pallet was showing the age a bit. Not oxidized, or tired, but more of a settled flavor profile. Again, cedar wood notes, with some nice red fruit in the background. The tannins are still quite powerful, and likely prevent some of the other fruitiness from moving to the forefront. This probably has another few years, but why wait!? I was excited to try sammarco of this age, and more excited to find that it's still rockin'. (3908 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 5/24/2012 & rated 96 points: (La Terrazza – Dusseldorf) Wow. Very nice wine. Full mature fruit profile with a nice earth flavor. Sweet, integrated secondary fruit. I am very impressed. Drinking perfectly. A big step up from pergole torte. (96) (5353 views)
Tasted by rnellans on 1/14/2012 & rated 93 points: Dark fruits, minerals. Medium body..good balance..very nice. No hurry on next one. (5284 views)

SuperTuscan Blend

SuperTuscan Blend refers to wines which feature a significant Sangiovese component combined with grapes not traditionally associated with Italy like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon. This separates it from "Sangiovese blend" which is used for wines which are predominantly Sangiovese and combined with traditional Italian varieties. There is often confusion as many wines most famous associated with the term "Super Tuscan" like Sassicaia, Masseto and Ornellaia have no Sangiovese and are properly linked to 'Red Bordeaux Blend.'

In fact, Super Tuscan was a term coined to refer specifically to wines such as Sassicaia and Tignanello. These were wines that "fell out" of the official DOCG classification of Italian wines because they either contained grapes not permitted (international varietals such as cabernet sauvignon or merlot,) were aged differently (I.e. in barrique) or were 100% sangiovese - which was not permitted at the time for Chianti (E.g. Fontodi Flaccianello.) Forced to be classified as simply "Vina di Tavola" these wines nontheless quickly found favour in international markets and comanded prices above the highest quality DOCG Chianti Classico & Brunello di Montalcino wines at the time. The wine industry and press began to refer to these wines as SuperTuscans because of their popularity and quality, but also because of the prices they commanded. Subsequently, the Italian authorities, under the Goria Law 1992, redrew the classifications, and included the category IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) to classify the SuperTuscans.
