Tasted by Decanting Queen on 3/16/2024: Dark fruit, lots of sediment. Cork fully intact (unusual for these older Lewis Syrah). If you like older Syrah this is not past it, if anything still drinking young. Mostly big plummy fruit and black pepper, some savory gamey notes. Not as complex as I would have expected although have not had this exact vintage before (have had much older and younger) so just not that exciting for me. I didn’t rate because under the circumstances we were not paying close attention to the wine so it could just be me!!! (393 views)
Tasted by tgkswine on 8/28/2021 & rated 93 points: I wondered how much gas in the tank this would have? The answer is plenty. Drinking very well with dark fruit, integrated tanins and a long smooth finish. Popped and poured and it got better and better as it warmed and got air. (680 views)
Tasted by tgkswine on 3/20/2021 & rated 91 points: Still drinking well. Dark fruit with no hint of fade. Smooth tannins with some earthiness. Medium finish. Think it’s time to drink up. (763 views)
Tasted by bobadopolis on 9/6/2020 & rated 93 points: Superb dark and earthy fruit right out of the bottle. Seemed to fade a bit after an hour or 2 in the decanter. Would drink now with either no decant or just a splash decant (794 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 7/25/2020: 4th Saturday Group: Uptown Brown Bag (R&Ds): From magnum, courtesy of our hosts. Dark color with notes of white pepper and candied red fruit. Tends towards dark fruit on the palate, along with pepper and roasted game flavors. Very tasty. (1150 views)
Tasted by DoubleMagnum on 5/31/2019 & rated 92 points: Hearty and curvy but voluptuously delicious. Sometimes one craves a bit junk in the trunk. Went amazingly well with grilled wings in soy sauce. (1120 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 10/4/2018 & rated 92 points: Continues to drink well! A cab lovers syrah! (744 views)
Tasted by hrazdiiv on 9/3/2018 & rated 91 points: Like most of the other reviews state quite clearly, this is a very full bodied wine that is definitely a crowdpleaser for this genre. Even after 10yr+ in the bottle, the color is super dark - extremely concentrated and viscous, deep purple/black. The nose is a little simpler, robust notes of cherry, tobacco and dark chocolate, but still very pleasant, all the elements working very well together. Not a lot of tannin as you'd expect...but some certainly, enough to give it just a very slight edge. Finish is medium/long, the concentration really playing out for a good 20 seconds or so. I've never had a bad bottle from this producer at any price point, super consistent. For this style, Lewis is just terrific. (817 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 2/25/2018 & rated 91 points: Good, full bodied, almost Cab-like. B&J (839 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 5/18/2017 & rated 91 points: Tasty ripe blackberry and cassis aromas and flavors with dominant toasted oak and spice culminating in a moderate finish with a hint of heat. (1022 views)
Tasted by tfharris on 8/22/2014 & rated 92 points: outstanding. Drinking really well right now. (2369 views)
Tasted by spencermerrell@gmail.com on 8/2/2014: 4 hrs decanting didn't do it justice. Wound up very tight with fairly high level of acidity. 2nd and third sips were delicious, after the first impression faded and the finish could be enjoyed. (2245 views)
Tasted by tfharris on 4/15/2014 & rated 92 points: sensational. Drinking really big now. (2361 views)
Tasted by tgkswine on 11/2/2013 & rated 92 points: Very, very good. (2496 views)
Tasted by tfharris on 10/22/2013 & rated 92 points: patience with this big boy. It was truly amazing (better) on the 3rd day! (2256 views)
Tasted by danielbleier on 10/11/2013 & rated 94 points: consistent with notes of 8/2/2013 (1097 views)
Tasted by DaddyNeedsPow on 8/30/2013 & rated 93 points: By the time we got to the end of the bottle, it was really starting to do something special. The initial decant was long, though, and honestly I assumed that it was just another very boozy Syrah with not much interest to back up the price tag. Patience proved me wrong. Hold or decant 5+ hours. (1389 views)
Tasted by danielbleier on 8/2/2013 & rated 94 points: A nose of smoke, menthol, and berries. Massive blackberry and blueberry cream flavors, with a touch of white pepper, and fine drying tannins on the finish. Silky and deep, this is a huge wine that somehow stays nimble. With apologies to Townes, lay me down satisfied. (1116 views)
Tasted by Jwd12 on 6/29/2013 & rated 93 points: Light blackberry, smooth and balanced not a real long finish but satisfying nevertheless. Wish I had more (920 views)
Tasted by gmbdds on 4/20/2013 & rated 90 points: Very dark and dense. There's a lot of stuffing in this but blackberry fruit is the obvious note. Big and full but the finish is cut short by mouth-puckering tannins. Might have mistaken for petite sirah if blind. (1024 views)
Tasted by WMWG on 1/22/2013 & rated 92 points: Whoa, very heavy and lush - I think I've had stews lighter than this one. Blueberries, herbs, fudge, cake batter, molasses. This one has a little of everything. Reminds me of the cakebread lake county zin. Drinking well now. (1271 views)
Tasted by tfharris on 1/20/2013 & rated 89 points: Thick and brooding Syrah. (1069 views)
Tasted by Hank Gillespie on 5/25/2012: Lewis Cellars (The Wine Summit at the Post Hotel in Lake Louise): Dark black/purple with a full rim; powerful on the nose - blackberry; the fruit coats the palate; some elegance; finishes shorter than Alec's Blend but primarily blackberry; high level of alcohol here. Needs about 4 years to mellow out a bit and hopefully extend the finish. (2222 views)
Tasted by tfharris on 5/9/2012 & rated 91 points: Magnificent. (1375 views)
Tasted by mreinitz on 10/28/2011 & rated 92 points: A big, almost chewy wine with plenty of ripe blackberry fruit that rides on through the midpalate and lingers for a while on the finish. There is a hint of blueberry pie and some smoke. There's a fair amount of oak, especially on the midpalate, but the fruit really pushes through. The alcohol doesn't seem excessive, there's a real freshness to the fruit, and there is decent acidic lift. It's a very big wine, but we were really in the mood for it tonight. (1849 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
