Community Tasting Notes (average 93.7 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 265 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by palfr2 on 2/21/2024: Less convincing than on a a prior showing. I could not pick up the truffles and mushroom on the nose. Bottle variation may be and also tasting alongside because a good left banker in the form of Sociando-Mallet Cuvee Jean Gautreau 2000 did not help. For me left bank always eclipses right bank at a similar quality level with the more regal structure. So not the fairest of assessment but my tasting companions enjoyed it very much and observed this is at beginning of plateau with lots of life left. (895 views)
Tasted by brianakrin on 12/22/2023 & rated 94 points: Sweet, balanced, rich, and surprisingly fresh and youthful.
Not particularly complex but who cares, it’s beautiful! (1171 views)
Tasted by dbg on 12/2/2023: Dark red to rim. Red fruits, forest floor, mocha on the nose. Full body, lots of ripe fruit, good balance, tannins have mellowed, no significant complexity, moderate-long finish. Not over-ripe or gloopy - last vintage before going to the dark side? Should hold for years. Will it develop true aged Bordeaux complexity? Excellent. (1284 views)
Tasted by Sfflyer123 on 11/5/2023 & rated 96 points: Had another bottle of the 98 Pavie this weekend. It is firing on all cylinders. Soft tannins, great complexity, wonderful bouquet. It's in a perfect drinking spot right now. (1586 views)
 Tasted by NEducatedGes on 9/13/2023 & rated 94 points: Great, need a 2*hr decant. 94+ (2016 views)
Tasted by soyhead on 6/24/2023: tasted blind. A hint of tomato on the nose. in the mouth coffee, rich fruit, smooth, and sexy. Alexander the great guessed Bordeaux, but i was pretty sure its california; i mean who makes this style of wine in Bordeaux? Oh yeah, i guess Perse does. Seems i last tried this just over a decade ago, and i think its in a lovely place now, though the '99, last night, had a leg up on it in richness. coming on the heels of several more recent and disappointment Pavie tastings (younger vintages, tight &tannic ), my conclusion is that this cuvee needs 25 years in bottle to be approachable.  Tasted by Vish67 on 1/3/2023 & rated 98 points: Shared with friends on New Years Eve - thoroughly enjoyed by all - surprising body, flavor, and structure (2936 views)
Tasted by alamoave on 12/8/2022 & rated 96 points: This continues to be my favorite Pavie. It was WOTN at a charity dinner featuring a 1998 horizontal of Pavie, Pavie Macquin, Cheval Blanc and Ausone, along with a vertical of Leoville Las Cases from 1986, 1989, 2000 and 2003. So wow. (2702 views)
Tasted by RojoVino24 on 10/2/2022 & rated 94 points: Enjoyed at Pappas steakhouse in Dfw. Superb bottle. Beautiful black fruit, baking spice. Pure velvet. (3098 views)
Tasted by jviz on 8/6/2022 & rated 94 points: PnP. Big and extracted but balanced with alcohol at only 13.5%. Dense and rich, with milk chocolate and some dark cherry. It’s got polished, thick velvery tannins, but some plum and spice as well for interest. I enjoyed this quite a bit (3463 views)
Tasted by rralls on 3/3/2022 & rated 93 points: Still young imo. (3928 views)
Tasted by joshabramson on 8/19/2021 & rated 94 points: Out of the bottle: This is a big wine, lots of ripe fruit, silky smooth, a lot of tannin still that bites a bit on the finish, but there's enough fruit here to make it all good.

Two hours later: Coming together a bit more in the glass for sure, could probably use even more time, and will likely continue to evolve in the bottle for many years to come. (4525 views)
Tasted by liber on 8/5/2021 & rated 93 points: 3rd of 6, opened an hour then decanted 90 minutes, perfect cork and level, step up on last bottle in December 18, big, dense wine as ever, showing more nuance but au fond a monolithic, fleshy, cherry fruity number with attractive sweetish core hiding decent fine tannic structure, limited upside now but ok for 10 if not 20 years. F+ (18).......pushing extraction at expense of grace! (3876 views)
Tasted by devraj on 6/9/2021 & rated 93 points: Dark reddish purple in color. Lovely aromas of dark red fruits, mocha, tobacco and baking spice. A very well balanced palate shows sweet and savory dark berry fruits with hint of smoky meat, good acidity, melting tannins and a long tobacco and spice inflected finish. (3753 views)
Tasted by wineappreciation on 6/2/2021 & rated 93 points: Plum, candied apples, melted chocolate, with mild floral notes; luscious, vibrant, sinuous, simple, but well developed, a little sweet, extravagant, with a long lingering finish (3464 views)
Tasted by lesz on 5/18/2021 & rated 94 points: part of a vertical tasting. itwas the oldest and wotn. (2823 views)
Tasted by Mark1npt on 5/15/2021 & rated 95 points: Brought to the table by good friend Leon....decanted for about 40 min before/during dinner. Enjoyed with rack of lamb and crispy duck. Nice florals and strong fruit on the nose.....the merlot component stands out with dark blackberry fruit and gentle spice. This has plenty of life ahead of it, especially when compared against the '02 Cos d' which would seem to be drinking 5-10 years older than the Pavie at this moment in time. (3756 views)
Tasted by MicklethePickle on 4/27/2021 & rated 94 points: Opened two nights ago. And took almost that long to really open up. From a magnum. Good dark red, more or less opaque, with only a hint of browning at the rim. Copious, glass-staining legs. Fine red berry fruit with a certain plumpness to it. Quite fragrant. Excellent fruit in the mouth, very full and ripe, but not at all overripe. Big chewy body, then finishes with fine, long-lasting chocolate and cocoa notes. Doing beautifully at 23 years from the vintage. There are fine-grained tannins present, but this is clearly in its prime drinking window. Shows no sign of impending decline, although this bottle was large format. Very attractive right bank that is identifiable as such. Glad I have another. 5-12-18-9: 94/100. (After reading the comments, two more observations: the fruit nose was cherries, and the wine is dense; wish I had wrote, that at first, but others certainly caught it.) (2399 views)
Tasted by TexasBob on 4/16/2021 & rated 96 points: Rich red-garnet. Unbelieveable transfixing nose of cellar must and mixed red and black fruits along with red cherries. The first sip hits you like a bolt of lightning with myriad fruit notes hyper-charged with umami and notes of banana and blueberries. (2040 views)
Tasted by Sfflyer123 on 2/22/2021 & rated 91 points: Decanted this wine for 2hours. The wine is still highly tannic despite its age. The complexity is mild, and the fruit is minimal. The acidity is high. If you like tannic, astringent, sour wines, this is the wine for you. 91 points. (2497 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 2/21/2021 & rated 94 points: East side neighbourhood hangout. Aired in decanter for about an hour and then enjoyed over the next. Drank in Zalto Universal.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of truffle earth, ripe grilled herbs, blackcurrant, blackberries, black cherries, licorice. Developed.
On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium+ alcohol (13.5%), chewy high tannins that smoothened out plushly with more air, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of chocolate, licorice, blackcurrant, blackberries, black cherries, grilled herbs, truffle earth, some dark red cherries. Rich plush mouth-feel. Long finish.
Very good quality. Nicely developed Right Banker drinking in a good place now. Should be nice over the next 4-5 years as well, but I wouldn't age it beyond that. (2480 views)
Tasted by KTelaak_Buffalo on 12/26/2020 & rated 90 points: A lighter style of Pavie. Without a doubt showing some age in color and flavors. Writing this after 3 hours open and not seeing a major development in the glass. Hoped for more, not disappointed though. Solid for the age that it is. Enjoy now!
Tannins are still strong at hour 4. (2487 views)
Tasted by chull on 12/10/2020 & rated 93 points: Inky purple, no bricking, fine grain tannins prominent, berry flavors and nose. Decanted and drank over 6 hours now, (2534 views)
95/100 (2492 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Saint Emilion Grat Classified Growth, Classified Growths, Grands Crus Classes, GCC

In 1954, while the "Graves" growths had just published their own classification, the wine syndicate of Saint-Emilion, composed by wine growers, brokers and wine traders with the approval of the INAO - Institut National des Appellations d'Origine (A.O.C), decided to work on a classification for the wines of Saint Emilion. Initially, four grades were defined. These were reduced to two - First Great Classified Growth (A and B) and Great Classified Growth - in 1984.

As of Medoc's 1855 historical grading, the Saint-Emilion Great Classified Growth classification is not only based on qualitative criteria by tasting the wines on a ten years period previous to the assessment, but also on commercial considerations such as:
- sales price levels
- national and international commercial distribution
- the estate's reputation on the market

Properties who don't manage to join the club of about sixty Classified Growths are given the denomination of Great Growth ("Grand Cru"), while the remaining wineries of the A.O.C are simply reported as "Saint-Emilion". It is to be noted that the owners must officially apply to appear in the official classification. Thus for example the famous Chateau Tertre-Roteboeuf, whose quality and reputation would easily justify to be listed among the First Great Classified Growths, does not appear here by the will of its owner, François Mitjaville.

The Saint-Emilion Great Growth classification was revised in 1969, 1985, 1996 and 2006. The only two guaranteed vintage (A.O.C) who can apply to the classification are the "Saint-Emilion Grand Cru" and "Saint-Emilion" areas.

By grading 61 properties, the 2006 revision confirmed many growths from the former classification, but also caused a number of surprises and a few inevitable disappointments. Many observers thought that the impressive progression of Perse's Chateau Pavie since 1998 would be rewarded by an upgrade into the First Great Classified Growths (A) category, but finally such was not the case.

Among the estates promoted to the First Great Classified Growths B category are Chateau Troplong-Mondot and Pavie-Macquin, whose efforts made since the Nineties fully justify their new grade. It should be noted that no First Great Classified Growth was relegated to the lower Great Classified Growth class.

Promoted growths from the status of Great Growth ("Grand Cru") to Great Classified Growth ("Grand Cru Classe") are: Chateaux Bellefont-Belcier, Destieux, Fleur Cardinale, Grand Corbin, Grand Corbin-Despagne and Monbousquet.

The demoted growths from the status of Great Classified Growth to Great Growth are: Chateaux Bellevue, Cadet Bon, Faurie de Souchard, Guadet Saint-Julien, La Tour du Pin-Figeac (Belivier), La Tour du Pin-Figeac (Moueix), Lamarzelle, Petite Faurie de Soutard, Tertre Daugay, Villemaurine and Yon-Figeac. If the recent samples of some of the above mentioned properties may justify their current downgrade, there are great chances that estates like Bellevue, Tertre Daugay or Yon-Figeac will be upgraded to their previous rankings by the next revision in 2016 as the progresses noted after 2000, but not entering in the range of vintages (1993 - 2002) appointed for the criteria of selection for the 2006 classification, are noticable.

The two following estates have completely disappeared from the Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classification: Curé-Bon-la-Madeleine (integrated meanwhile to Chateau Canon) and La Clusière (integrated meanwhile to Chateau Pavie).

Finally, no estate considered as "garagiste" has integrated the classification. Valandraud, Mondotte, Le Dome, Bellevue-Mondotte or Magrez-Fombrauge have, for the least, the potential to be ranked as Great Classified Growths. In sight of the very fine quality reached by the above mentioned estates in recent vintages as well as all the innovative wine making methods used by the "garagistes", it remains to be seen whether the authorities will dare to cross the line in 2016..?
