Tasted by dhtabor on 8/15/2020 & rated 92 points: 30 years old yet not past it. Well rounded and slightly syrupy. Delightful (1111 views)
Tasted by dhtabor on 5/18/2020 & rated 96 points: Beautiful and well aged. Still has lively fruit, acidity and spiciness. A real treat. (1167 views)
Tasted by Yassine23 on 3/18/2020: At first, caramel, black fruits and marzipan. Then the blackberry and spices took over. Great wine, though felt a little young at this stage. Not massively primary but could age further (1280 views)
Tasted by acyso on 3/10/2019 & rated 93 points: Rhone, lots of it (Chicago, IL): It's not a bottle that is going to blow your mind, but this is a more than solid bottle of Hermitage that I'd be happy to open any time. It's black fruited and powerful, and in general this wine speaks very true to its origins and grape. The ripeness of the vintage is on display here, manifesting itself in the sweet fruit. Fully resolved and ready now. (2796 views)
Tasted by william perry on 4/29/2018 & rated 93 points: it was not expectedly very tight upon opening. Decanted for 4 hours - incredible structure after 27 years- complex fruit dark berries, long lasting finish bold palate , leather and balance throughout (1952 views)
Tasted by Blake Brown on 1/5/2018: 1990 DELAS CUVEE MARQUIS de la TOURETTE HERMITAGE- the nose had an unexpected mineral oil and menthol fragrance, of which the latter continued on and was joined by some dry red currant, cherry and berry fruit; I have to think this was a bottle variation for what it should have been. As I recall, I had a fabulous bottle a few years ago and very different from this bottle. (770 views)
Tasted by cwjames on 3/1/2015 & rated 92 points: Drank at supper with friends so no tasting note. Opened with trepidation as thought it would be likely over the hill. However, it was mature with mahogany at rim. wonderful cassis notes and very long. May have been better a year or two ago but still very good. (2311 views)
Tasted by fdub on 12/31/2011 & rated 93 points: Lovely elegant nose with meat, white pepper, and blackberries. Nice mouthfeel with leather and meat on the palate. Solid acidic backbone. Still has years of life ahead. (3714 views)
Tasted by MLD11 on 5/14/2009 & rated 94 points: Like a comfortable slipper that fits just right and isnt falling apart. Leather, cherries, lamb but still with good soft fruit. Magnificent. (4090 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 12/10/2008 & rated 94 points: Jonathan Dinh cooks dinner (Chez JD, Milpitas, California): Dark red violet color; lamb jus and charcoal nose; bewitching roasted lamb, smoke, black fruit and pepper palate; medium-plus finish (2145 views)
Tasted by SimonG on 9/29/2007: Remmington Norman Offline in aid of Pebbles Project (Le Colombier, London): Full colour, smokey nose, deep red fruit. Slightly smokey bacon. A little flat on the mid-palate, quite a savoury finish. Still quite chewy. Sweet fruit. Very good. (4842 views)
Tasted by Johann Von Mastiff on 1/20/2007 & rated 94 points: Still purple tinged in color. Closed when first opened but after a half an hour this wine took off. Green olives, lavender, crushed red berries. Wow. Super long finish (4015 views)
Tasted by Gregory Dal Piaz on 10/16/2006 & rated 91 points: youthful and moderately dark – at first minerally before turning a bit floral over a strong animal/furry base, smokey with spicy old wood, fennel and dill notes adding complexity to the very high toned dried cranberry/ blackberry fruit, nice barnyard and old wood nuances- juicy in the mouth, great acidity, lovely ripeness with great balance and near perfect integration, briary spice up front leads into medium full bodied mouthfeel that is rich if slightly monolithic, gamey on the finish which is a touch short but echoes the mineral and cedar aspects. At peak and holding, could be a bit more complex but the wonderful mouthfeel and balance compensate a bit for a very satisfying experience (3017 views)

U.S. Importer (Addt'l Info)

Since 1996, the firm of Delas Frères has fully retrieved the glory and spirit that made its fame. A highly motivated team is proud to help give a new lease of life to this great Rhône Valley wine merchant firm, founded in 1835. Under the guidance of its current management, numerous investments have been made at the winery at Saint-Jean-de-Muzols, near Tournon-sur-Rhône. A specially designed fermentation hall for the making of red wines, and a thorough rebuilding of the ageing cellar are amongst the key elements of the new quality charter from Delas Frères. This can be summed up in one sentence : place man and wine at the centre of the stage, together with terroir.

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

Hermitage

Guide to Hermitage wine Guide to Cote Rotie - Read about the Northern Rhone Valley

• The appellation stretches over 3 communes in the Drôme "département" : Tain-l'Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Larnage.

• The soils are a combination of granite with alluvial quaternary delta deposits, and, on the eastern side, Pliocene clay. This diversity explains the numerous different names given to vineyard plots within the appellation : Bessards, Greffieux, Méal, Roucoule, Beaumes, etc.

• The meso-climate provides shelter from the north winds, where the majority of the slopes is well exposed, facing south.

•The vineyards area adds up to 134 hectares/331 acres, with an annual production of 3,635 hectoliters. Authorized maximum yield is 40 hectoliters/hectare (2.3 US tons/acres).

• Grape varieties : Syrah (an addition of up to 15% of Marsanne or Roussanne is allowed).
