Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 94.6 pts. and median of 95 pts. in 27 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by glou.sf on 9/16/2023 & rated 95 points: Really pretty nose with red cherries, floral and forest notes, and wild berries. There is nice depth and it picked up a bit of sweetness with air. Good acidity on the palate with tart red fruit flavors, cherries, and blood orange. Long finish. A beautiful wine that is still quite young but very approachable. It's relatively light on its feet with excellent balance. This should be even more amazing in 5-10 years. 95+ (1005 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 3/12/2023 & rated 97 points: Tasted blind. This was really grand, combined density with elegance and aromatic intensity. Nose of dark and red fruit, Vosne spices, black tea, red flowers. (1289 views)
Tasted by Cailles on 3/12/2023 & rated 94 points: Tasted double blind. This showed promising but will need more time to soften further and fill out more as it showed a bit thin towards the finish. The attack, however, showed very layered and I guess with a few more years of age this could become a fantastic wine.

TN: Medium expressive nose with ripe dark berries, smoke and earthy notes. On the palate there are menthol notes, dark red berries, crushed rocks, stems, some vegetal notes. The precision is quite good. High-quality tannins but in need of further softening. Good acidity backbone. Missing a bit of complexity as it is one-noted from mid-palate into the finish.

Decanting: Not decanted, I guess an hour+ in the decanter would be good here. (1315 views)
Tasted by sirpat00 on 3/10/2023 & rated 97 points: Tasted blind. Various expressions of sweet spice and red berry fruit build an incredibly facetted and delicate wine. Earth notes and a layer of perfume add plenty of verticality. A soft texture, nice density and the follow-through from attack to the long finish ideally reflect the feminine character Tasted blind. Outstanding. (996 views)
Tasted by La Sprezzatura on 3/10/2023 & rated 97 points: directly out of the bottle.

on the nose elegant, deep and full of finesse, precise, red fruited, light footed.

this is endless on the palate, elegant with an elegant backbone of tannins, some herbs with makes it even more complex and soooo fun to drink, almost no wood and exactly my style!

almost a philosophical wine. great experience. (784 views)
Tasted by lepetitchateau on 7/13/2021 & rated 91 points: Has the classic beauty of the sisters’ wines. Clearly not fully evolved as it only offers a hint of its grace and complexity - actually surprisingly light right now. (1233 views)
Tasted by bill00 on 5/28/2021 & rated 95 points: Pure black raspberry fruit. A little bit of oak spice. There's an attractive plushness to the texture that makes this really enjoyable right now though there's clearly underlying structure for the long-term. Excellent. (1037 views)
Tasted by LW31 on 4/30/2021: Very promising! All to play but great fruit and depth here. Needs time still, but not inaccessible. Maybe wait another 5-6 years? (1025 views)
Tasted by kr522 on 12/7/2020 & rated 95 points: Expressive and very finely styled. more red fruited than dark, and for my taste a bit more alluring than the Ruchottes which is a bigger and darker wine and will outlive this (94-95) (1236 views)
Tasted by UTPK on 7/12/2020: Much more closed than anticipated. Needed 1 hour to open up. Elegant, strawberry, allspice and pineneedle nose. Very fresh and succulent. Still tannins but super balance. Grand cru quality and major leap from the VR village. Needs 5 more years to blossom. (1692 views)
Tasted by SLab on 10/14/2018 & rated 93 points: Très beau vin. Style plus droit et moins fruité que Rousseau. Délicat avec cerises rouges et noires. Légère astringence en fin de bouche. 93pts possiblement plus dans quelques années. (1574 views)
Tasted by aajder on 3/21/2017 & rated 94 points: Exciting color. The nose is pure and classy; showing aromas of ripe raspberry, spices, flowers, damp soil, minerals and a hint of oak. This is medium full bodied on the palate with excellent concentration and tremendous class. The long finish features noble tannins and impeccable balance. Lacks just a bit of richness... (2616 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 3/10/2017: The Verticals at La Paulée 2017 (The Rainbow Room, New York): Light red core. More pungent, gamy aromatics. Slightly fuller than the 2012 with more sap. Red fruit, spice, zesty acidity and citrus, lightly earthy. This too seduced and was even more exciting than the younger vintage. Had to go back and retaste this! (2718 views)
Tasted by JOsgood on 3/10/2017: La Paulée Verticals Tasting (Rainbow Room NYC): Wow! Off the charts great. Super young with tremendous upside but just fantastic today. Everything I want in a grand cru Burgundy. (2877 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 3/10/2017 & rated 96 points: La Paulée de New York: Vertical Tasting (Rainbow Room - New York NY): Tasting, brief note. Even better than the 2012. flavors are just as big and enticing, with great red and black berry and wonderful Asian five spice. Textures give this a completely seamless feel. Very good+ now, with great potential. (4091 views)
Tasted by ews3 on 3/10/2017 & rated 94 points: La Paulee de NY - Verticals Tasting (Rainbow Room - NYC): tasted at large walkaround tasting. showing more than the '12, in both breadth and depth. some nice spicebox notes and woodsy notes. long finish. again, needs time. (3424 views)
Tasted by alanr on 3/14/2013 & rated 95 points: 2013 La Paulee, New York; 3/12/2013-3/14/2013: Wow, deep, brooding, rich, dark cherry, excellent acidity, fine tannins, just beautiful. (7072 views)
Tasted by Gargantua on 3/9/2013: La Paulée de New York 2013 (Metropolitan Pavilion, NYC): Nose is holy cow level pretty. Palate has a heavy jam with a pronounced viscosity, but the acid renders it round with a tannic finish. Very impressive. (5737 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 3/9/2013: Focus on 2010 Burgundy- The 2013 La Paulee Grand Tasting (Metropolitan Pavilion, New York): Elegant, crisp black fruit. Very strong, ringing acidity. Holding back quite a bit now. Not a gigantic Grand Cru but very refined, great length and persistence. Really full of finesse and may turn out to be truly outstanding. (6198 views)
Tasted by xwine on 3/9/2013: La Paulée de New York 2013 Grand Tasting (Metropolitan Pavilion, New York): Lost my notes on the Mugneret-Gibourg wines, but the lineup was terrific. Tried the Vosne, Nuits Chaignots, Echezeaux, and Clos Vougeot. Wines of purity and grace. The Chaignots was predictably a very elegant rendition of Nuits St. Georges. Love what the sisters are doing here. (5351 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 3/9/2013 & rated 95 points: La Paulée de New York Grand Tasting (Metropolitan Pavilion - New York NY): Tasting. Truly a superb Echezeaux. Mostly red cherry aromas with great Asian spice. Same spice on palate with both red and black cherry. Sensational length and textures to long finish, already showing fascinating nuance through to finish. (6814 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 12/12/2012 & rated 95 points: Pop and pour, the color is reddish pink. Raspberries, strawberries, limestone, iron, roasted almonds, a hint of white flower and earth. With time, noticeably darker and more intense color. With 30 minutes of air, the fruit is a bit darker and jammier, blackberries, mineral and earth. 24 hours later, slightly unripe, ie sweet, sour and tar, blackberries, a bit more noticeable floral note, limestone, roasted almonds and earth. Excellent concentration, sweet yet cool fruits, iron/limestone, noticeable tannins and piercing acidity. This is a classic GC burgundy from a classic year that most Burgundy lovers will find impressive. It isn’t hedonistic like the 09 Chambolle-Musigny 'Les Feusselottes but more serious. This is a vin de garde that will live for a long time due to the piercing acidity. I would open at least fifteen more years. I would say this is a red equivalent of the 10 chablis with crazy minerality and acidity. Current drinking 92, Material 95, future enjoyment 96. (2472 views)
Tasted by lepetitchateau on 11/12/2012 & rated 93 points: The nose is all density and spice. Today, this is not showing as well as the 2010 Mugneret-Gibourg Ruchottes. It is round but not quite as well balanced or as precise. Still, it has power and beauty and likely will merit a higher score later. (Domaine) (1951 views)
Tasted by xwine on 5/11/2012: Tasting at Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg and Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé (Vosne-Romanée and Chambolle-Musigny): Apparently from Les Rouges du Bas and Les Quartiers de Nuits. Much deeper nose than the previous wines, deeper pitched. Very deep and brooding palate, pinpoint balance, long. (2970 views)
Tasted by St Paul on 3/23/2012 & rated 95 points: This is a great wine. I had it against the 09 and this delivers so much more what I like. This is very sensual with its transparent sweet red fruit and velvet touch. Beautiful wine. (2570 views)

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
