Tasted by hprphf on 11/19/2022: Smelled quite resolved, don't think I ended up tasting it. (1307 views)
Tasted by popasq on 1/16/2022 & rated 94 points: Really excellent, smooth, balanced, better than the last time we drank this 10 years ago! (1697 views)
Tasted by ptvie on 10/11/2020 & rated 93 points: nice structure, aromas of tar and leather, I don't think that it would profit from more cellaring so start to drink up the remaining bottles (2637 views)
Tasted by FrancoisD on 8/9/2020 & rated 80 points: Vin qui a passé son peak depuis un bout de temps.
L'alcool sempble détaché du vin.
Acidité trop faible.
Feuilles mortes, boue, fumier. (2780 views)
Tasted by forceberry on 10/18/2018 & rated 95 points: 12,5% alcohol.

Moderately developed pomegranate color with a pale, brick-orange rim. Somewhat restrained, subtly sweet-toned and pretty attractive nose with layered aromas of wizened red cherries, some sweet raisiny tones, a little bit of mocha and smoky nuances of oak, light vanilla tones, a hint of developed leathery character and a lifted touch of balsamic VA. The wine is lively, medium-bodied and bright on the palate with intense, dry flavors of sour cherries, tart cranberries, some developed tobaco and beef jerky tones, a little bit of crunchy dark fruit, a hint of dusty earth and a touch of savory oak spice. Overall the wine feels quite lean, but not too much. The high acidity and somewhat grippy medium tannins are perfectly balanced with the body and the flavors, lending good sense of structure to the wine. The finish is moderately grippy, nuanced and savory with lengthy flavors of earthy spices, sour cherry bitterness, some crunchy cranberry tones, a little bit of leather, light raisiny tones and a hint of savory and slightly peppery oak spice.

A beautiful, classic and wonderfully structured Sangiovese at its plateau of maturity. The nose promised a wine with more sweetness and quite modern character, whereas the wine was beautifully old-school with great structure and nicely crunchy, dry and subtly bitter character. Most likely the wine will keep for many years more, but I doubt there is much room for further development. Drink or keep for a handful of years. A thoroughly impressive and delicious vintage of Tignanello. Highly recommended. (3964 views)
Tasted by FrancoisD on 1/22/2016 & rated 94 points: Retour sur note precedente et d'accord! (7256 views)
Tasted by Vinnut on 12/19/2015 & rated 91 points: Medium reddish garnet in color with slight amber at the edges. Forward, attractive & fragrant nose of mature & developed ripe fruit aromas of cherries & strawberries with overtones of floral notes of roses & earthy/dust, truffles, cocoa/coffee, spices, leather, tar, anise, dried herbs, minerals & some cedar in the background. Medium bodied with a good concentration of balanced, smooth textured, matured & developed, ripe fruit flavors of cherries, berries & plums with earthy, mushrooms, chocolate, coffee, spices & minerals. Lingering dry finish. Drinks quite well at present but doubt any further development would occur from additional aging. More developed than a comparable Bordeaux from the same vintage. (6520 views)
Tasted by FrancoisD on 10/17/2015 & rated 94 points: Dégustation horizontale: Tignanello 1982 & 2001

1982:

(6047 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 4/10/2015 & rated 91 points: Mini Verticals - Tasted Blind: Licorice, chocolate, earthy, coffee notes. Plenty of age on it but has developed well. Resolved tannins on the palate but still has life and good structure. Drink now. (7166 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 11/7/2013 & rated 93 points: World Wine Symposium 2013 - Kevin and Kelly's excellent adventure; 11/6/2013-11/14/2013 (Villa D’este, Lake Como): Came directly from the winery. Fully matured, dry dark fruits, strong tobacco note, licorice and earth. Warm and round palate impression, very ripe fruit expression and fully integrated tannins. A bit more advanced than the 82 Bordeaux counterparts, perhaps the similar stage as the 82 La lagune in development. A very food friendly at this stage. (6160 views)
Tasted by ilee on 6/15/2013 & rated 95 points: Oh this is very good indeed. I bought this magnum from Farr recently, and brought this to dinner with some friends at the China Club. Popped and poured. Terrific floral and currant bouquet, deliciously fruity on the palate, the wine put on weight and gained layers of earthy mineral complexity during the course of the evening. The vibrancy of the fruit helps this wine come across as younger than expected, but actually I think it is squarely in its drinking window, and the tannins are certainly soft and well rounded. Having said that, there's quite a few more years left in this -- I didn't pay a ridiculous price for this, and will certainly buy any further bottles I come across in the market, as should you!  Tasted by avp on 10/24/2012: Ripe cherry nose with violets, liquorice, meat, dried herbs, iron and chocolaty wood.
Medium bodied, intense and refreshingly structured - cooling but meaty - palate with slight tannic grip. Blue flowers, dark tobacco, tar and liquorice. Warmer towards the long finish.
Good stuff. Pretty ripe style but giving some beautiful cooling and slightly brooding nuances. (6169 views)
Tasted by Lype on 10/5/2012: Veggies notes, unflavoured natural yoghurt, meaty. (1303 views)
Tasted by rskterroir on 4/30/2012 flawed bottle: Real shame this was corked - happened a few times with mid 80's STs. Wines awere too young anyway- will stick onwards (6346 views)
Tasted by Poggio Al vento on 3/14/2012 & rated 94 points: This wine was all about the pureness and soft fruit juice! The smooth factor was from another level than ever tasted before! The nose had a deep bouquet of leather and cigar box mixed with some real dark and sweet black fruit-tones that came through more and more along the way! that Palet was ultra smooth and the midpalet was really nice with a lot of sweet fruit almost port-ish without the sugerfeel! the finish was really persistent considering the 30 years of live and I my opinion this wine was drinking perfectly know but it is a wine that is not able to deal with food so drink up and enjoy this brilliant wine on its own! WP (4814 views)
Tasted by Alex H on 11/8/2011 & rated 89 points: Rose and dried tea leaves but sweet rose petals and lovely sexy muscular sweet leathery body of sweet Ambroise strawberry tea. Delicious and younger tasting than it should be. (4548 views)
Tasted by Mingmong on 11/8/2011 & rated 94 points: Flowers, leather, dark fruits and spice on the nose. Smooth, supple red fruit, tobacco, some chocolate, velvety smooth. Still showing very well! (4800 views)
Tasted by burgburgburg on 6/3/2011 & rated 92 points: in mid-neck position; cork is quite flimsy and disintegrated; slight fruit and in fact quite muted in nose initially; much more opened after almost 4 hours in bottle; soft, complex and layered bouquet; wet leave, restrained fruit, high in savory and minerality; 30s+ finish; lovely (3897 views)
Tasted by normanhebert on 12/25/2010 & rated 92 points: 28 year wine. Drank with lamb. The wine was still very fresh with some complexity remaining. The nose was blackberry and leather. The finish was still long. I was worried the wine was long past due but we were all pleasantly surprised. (4033 views)
Tasted by popasq on 12/19/2010 & rated 90 points: Still elegant, perhaps way past it's peak. (3868 views)
Tasted by dre on 8/14/2010 & rated 95 points: Vintage Tignanello Tasting (Louise's House): Clear rustic plum coloured core with a small copper rim. This is much more concentrated than the Tig 80 or 81.
Delicate nose that gives off a nice mix of floral notes mixed with roofing tar, Cuban tobacco, licorice and worn woods. There is not as much fruit as I was expecting.
The palate shows a very silky wine that is dry and well balanced. Bright acidity and shockingly large tannins give this wine the feel of a teenager. This has a very similar flavor profile to the nose. The fruit intensity is fairly reserved at this stage though, especially compared to the large structure that this wine still showcases. I feel comfortable saying that the wine is in a bit of a funk at the moment, but the fruit is still packed in there tightly. Give this wine another few years and your patience will be rewarded.
Drink now - 2020.
Outstanding Quality. 95 pts.

*This came alive the next day and stewed fruits were beautifully mixed in with tea and earth notes. (4935 views)

Tasted by costamalfitana on 1/24/2010 & rated 92 points: high fill, cork in absolute top condition, purchased this case about 25 years ago and left it untouched in the cellar.
we consumed most bottles in the early 90-ties and forgot the 3 remaining bottles.
It must have been about 12 years ago since our last tasting of this wine.

medium red in color, fairly dark brick red along the rim, at first the nose remains a bit closed but after 90 minutes or so the sangiovese-grape really comes alive, full nose of rose petal, leather, red fruit, stylish and very attractive nose (after some time, that is), medium bodied on the palate, hardly any tannin left, nice acidity keeps this one alive and there seems to be some aging potential in reserve still. outstanding, really very good. (4086 views)
Tasted by jill k on 11/27/2008: Woody. Iron. Slight strawberry on the palate, and has acid to support the wines. The tannins are silky, but ight. Reasonable finish. Almost burg-like after 30 mins in the glass. (3983 views)

Producer Location - Tenuta Tignanello (Google Maps)
The Antinori family has produced wine since 1385 when Giovanni di Piero Antinori joined the Florentine Winemakers Guild. Throughout its long history (across 26 generations) the family has always managed winemaking in person. Today, the company is managed by Marquis Piero Antinori. The company has dedicated great efforts to improving the quality of its wines, through careful planning of investments and research programs embracing all production aspects. The success of these programs has enabled the company to produce a superb range of quality wines from its various estates in Tuscany and Umbria. The Tignanello Estate is home to the famous Tignanello and Solaia vineyards. Located between the Greve and Pesa Valleys, in the heart of the Chianti Classic area, 30 kilometers south of Florence, Tignanello boasts 350 hectares of land with 147 hectares of vines. The vineyards are divided into small, individual areas over an area of 47 hectares at Tignanello, facing South-West, and the neighboring 10 hectares at Solaia, both with Cabernet and Sangiovese grapes that benefit from specific exposure and micro-climate.

SuperTuscan Blend

SuperTuscan Blend refers to wines which feature a significant Sangiovese component combined with grapes not traditionally associated with Italy like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon. This separates it from "Sangiovese blend" which is used for wines which are predominantly Sangiovese and combined with traditional Italian varieties. There is often confusion as many wines most famous associated with the term "Super Tuscan" like Sassicaia, Masseto and Ornellaia have no Sangiovese and are properly linked to 'Red Bordeaux Blend.'

In fact, Super Tuscan was a term coined to refer specifically to wines such as Sassicaia and Tignanello. These were wines that "fell out" of the official DOCG classification of Italian wines because they either contained grapes not permitted (international varietals such as cabernet sauvignon or merlot,) were aged differently (I.e. in barrique) or were 100% sangiovese - which was not permitted at the time for Chianti (E.g. Fontodi Flaccianello.) Forced to be classified as simply "Vina di Tavola" these wines nontheless quickly found favour in international markets and comanded prices above the highest quality DOCG Chianti Classico & Brunello di Montalcino wines at the time. The wine industry and press began to refer to these wines as SuperTuscans because of their popularity and quality, but also because of the prices they commanded. Subsequently, the Italian authorities, under the Goria Law 1992, redrew the classifications, and included the category IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) to classify the SuperTuscans.

Tignanello

The original Super-Tuscan, Tignanello is produced exclusively from the Tignanello vineyard, a 47 hectares (116 acres) southwest-facing, calcareous rocky-marl and limestone soil plot with tufaceous elements, planted between 1,150 and 1,312 feet above sea level at Antinori's Santa Cristina Estate. It was the first Sangiovese to be aged in small oak barrels, the first red wine in modern times to use a non-traditional grape variety, Cabernet, in the blend, and among the first red wines made in Chianti with no white grapes. In all three instances, it set the example for a new breed of exceptional top-of-the-line Italian wine. Tignanello, originally a Chianti Classico Riserva labeled Vigneto Tignanello, was first vinified as a single vineyard wine in the 1970 vintage, when it contained 20% Canaiolo and 5% Trebbiano and Malvasia, and was aged in small oak cooperage. With the 1971 vintage the wine became a Vino da Tavola della Toscana and was named Tignanello after the vineyard from which it originates. Beginning with this vintage, Tignanello stopped adhering to the rules laid down by Chianti Classico Disciplinare, and with the 1975 vintage, white grapes were totally eliminated. Since the 1982 vintage, the blend has been 80% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. Tignanello was not produced in the 1972, 1973, 1974, 1976, 1984 and 1992 vintages.
