Community Tasting Notes (average 90.1 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 37 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by hadukla on 6/23/2022: No score - First time drinking a white sweet of any kind much less a sauternes. Once or twice I had Port as part of a dinner wine pairing menu, so I have no real context to score.

I liked this though, even though it was quite good on its own, I felt I wouldn't be able to drink too much without food but we had always planned to pair it with a big, luxuriously frosted bundt cake and with the cake the wine performed beautifully. Will need to get more familiar with this style. (1495 views)
Tasted by crazywineguy on 3/26/2021 & rated 91 points: This stood up really well with the rich and sweet dessert. It had the stuffing and structure to cut through and work in alternating sips and dessert bites which can sometimes be challenging for the more delicate dessert wines like eiswein etc. A clean, fruity/floral nose and classical palate, lacking ultimate intensity or complexity but it is a 2004 after all, not a 2001 or 2003. It is an underappreciated Coutet, I think it is mid development and one could hold for a further decade in desired. (2248 views)
Tasted by Enfant sauvage on 2/20/2021: Other notes are spot on: orange peel, honey, and vanilla. Perhaps this isn’t going to blow anyone away, but it’s a great value given the unheralded vintage. Coutet in a bad year is still better than many others in overhyped ones. (2198 views)
Tasted by Lord of the Bottles on 10/10/2019 & rated 89 points: Drank with fig leaf ice cream at The Quality Chop House. Not the best pairing but some good notes of apricot and tangerine with a medium finish. (3207 views)
Tasted by FamousWine on 3/18/2019: Beautiful copper color that already tends to amber. A very nice syrup in mutation. With the eye we see immediately that the material is damn rich and sweet. The nose is of a beautiful complexity: a combination of stewed fruits and some subtle notes of aging (vanilla? caramel?). On the palate no surprise: the wine completely covers the mouth. It's full, unctuous and beautifully bold. Apricots and vanilla appear well at the tasting. Coutet 2004 combines a great aromatic richness and a beautiful control of the breeding. The cute little tension in the final allows the taste buds not to be disgusted. The wine is very good. It pairs perfectly with the dish since it balances the salt of the grilled chicken. Great choice!

Tasted by "Rhône Rider" on 3/11/2019 & rated 93 points: Ingefær, safran, ananas, aprikos. Mye botryris. Lang, frisk og søt. Herlig! 93 (2372 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 3/8/2019 & rated 90 points: Already drinking well, this medium bodied, fresh, yellow and orange, tropical fruit centered wine comes with a shot of vanilla, flowers and honeyed orange rind. This is a good sweet wine to pair with savory courses. (3591 views)
Tasted by zabah on 12/31/2018 & rated 92 points: Dark gold with some orange in the rim. Honey and peaches in the nose. Strong tropical fruits with uplifting acidity up front. Compelling and inviting walnuts and blue cheese in the mid-palate followed by caramel and orange peel. Full body and long length. (2240 views)
Tasted by fontaine on 7/25/2018 & rated 91 points: Bu sur quelques jours. Belle présence de fruits agrumes et miel. Belle densité malgré le millésime pas reconnu en sauternes. Excellent pour accompagner les desserts (1917 views)
Tasted by Markus IWC on 9/7/2017 & rated 83 points: Honey, apricots and orange. Medium body, crackers and vanilla. (877 views)
Tasted by Phenol73 on 11/20/2016 & rated 93 points: (Decanter FWE 2016) :: A rich tropical nose, showing lychee, burnt sugar, sultana, a tinge of lemongrass; some nuttiness. Unctuous mouthfeel, very fleshy and with a bit less acidity than the '11. Long finish. (3685 views)
Tasted by Gannet2013 on 5/3/2016 & rated 90 points: A good effort in a difficult vintage. Lacking in botyris. Some barley sugar, apricots and nuts. One for drinking up soon. (4070 views)
Tasted by Phenol73 on 2/13/2016 & rated 93 points: Such good balance. Classic Sauternes notes of apricots, creme brulee, lychee, but balanced with hazelnuts and clay so characteristic of Barsac. Not overly sweet; multi-dimensional, elegant and complex. Lively acidity, long finish, albeit the fruit is starting to mellow and age. (4227 views)
Tasted by docvin1107 on 10/23/2015 & rated 91 points: Delicious, but on the heavy side - missing acidity and elegance, however much better than last bottle. (4433 views)
 Tasted by wine&roses on 5/6/2015 & rated 90 points: Gorgeous. (4454 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 11/15/2014 & rated 91 points: Very expressive nose, floral, honeyed fruit, caramel, spices. Sweet but really well balanced with enough acidity. Lingering finish. Very good. 90-92 (3267 views)
Tasted by emzee.mc on 9/7/2014 & rated 88 points: The wine pours a golden straw color with thick legs, as evinced by the 14% abv. On the nose, the boytrytis is evident. Along with it brings notes of honey, creme brûlée, poached pears, citrus and peach jam. On the palate, the wine is rather thin albeit the sugars are quite prominent. There are prominent notes of honeyed biscuits, mint, buttered cookies and tropical fruits. The alcohol is very apparent and the astringency is obvious. However, finish is quite long. Quite a good effort for an average vintage. The only drawback for me is that the wine is a bit too cloying. Ergo, a couple points off for the lack of balance. (2725 views)
Tasted by gnosis on 10/10/2013: Extraordinarily nice Sauternes, drinking so well now. From a 750, copper color, with fresh acidity and great balance. Not cloying. One to drink during a meal as well as alone and at the end of a meal. Pure class. This is a Fave, must have more! (3498 views)
Tasted by henrygjeffreys on 7/10/2013: good nose, layers of honeycomb
mellow, walnuts, subtle
odd taste on finish which i couldn't place (prunes?)
long, long, long (3368 views)
Tasted by Cheungtp on 6/16/2013 & rated 90 points: Light golden color. Rich and dense, with notes of apricot, almond, vanilla, coconut extract, cream soda. Soft, lush mouth feel, acidity is slightly on the light side. There's caramel and cream in the finish. (3143 views)
Tasted by NineteenEightyTwo on 4/30/2013 & rated 91 points: Château Coutet Masterclass with Aline Baly (Domaine, Chicago): Tasted at a “Château Coutet Masterclass” with Aline Baly. Darker, solid gold color. Very fresh nose of ginger and spice, with a faint smoky musty note and a layer of piquant acetone at the end. The sappy palate is well concentrated, with honey flavors punctuated by a sharp cutting mineral taste and solid underlying acids. This finishes hot and a bit tart; it needs time to integrate more fully but shows promisingly now. The standout of the tasting, in my opinion. (3230 views)
Tasted by MindMuse on 1/15/2013 & rated 91 points: From 750ml. Golden amber. Heavy dose of spiced botrytis, with ripe mango, peach, orange marmalade, caramel, some floral tones. Lots of ripe flavor without being overly sweet. Acidity is okay, certainly not prominent or edgy. Fairly full body. The long, even finish is a strong quality for this wine as the gentle acids replenish my saliva which keeps the soft flavors alive in my mouth quite a long time. A few precipitated tartrate crystals are at the end of the bottle.

I enjoyed this much more on night two, probably not so much because of any development, but it was enjoyed in a more contemplative and undistracted environment where its subtleties could come to the fore and be appreciated. 90-92 (3059 views)
Tasted by pjaines on 12/30/2011: Decent enough to give you a thrill but lacks any depth and complexity to be anything other than a decent Barsac. fresh acidity works well with the honey and creme brûlée fruit to make this quite refreshing. Good. (3002 views)
Tasted by docvin1107 on 8/5/2011 & rated 87 points: No formal notes - dominated by a rather heavy botrytis and baked tropical flavors. 87+ (3187 views)
Tasted by Biggsy on 2/24/2011 & rated 91 points: Pale gold with a powerful orange and lemon barley nose. Dense and luxurious with sugary stone fruits, ginger, vanilla and milky coffee. Lingering candied mandarin orange flavours in the finish. Lovely. (3284 views)

Château Coutet

Producer website - Read more about Chateau Coutet

A prestigious 1er Cru Classé estate, Château Coutet is the oldest and largest property in Barsac. The estate has been owned by the Baly family since 1977. The name ‘Coutet’ is derived from the Gascon’s word for knife and the estate’s wines are renowned for their fresh ‘cutting’ acidity and crisp lively palate. Château Coutet has 35 hectares of vineyards planted to Sémillon (75%), Sauvignon Blanc (23%) and Muscadelle (2%). In their youth the wines show beguiling aromas of citrus, tropical fruits, white flowers, honey and ginger, revealing more candied fruit, gingerbread notes with age. The wine is matured in oak barriques for 18 months.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
