Community Tasting Notes (average 92.5 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 10 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Philip67 on 3/5/2024 & rated 93 points: Very good but very young. Savoury notes of tar and char along with red and black fruits. Medium plus weight. Not a massive structure. More understated and Bordeaux like than I was expecting. Medium finish, hints of complexity. Wait 5 to 10 years. (710 views)
Tasted by Kim Gerner on 3/5/2024 & rated 87 points: Winemaker tasting - Peter Michael Winery (Trio): This flight: Les Pavots 2020, 2019,2006
Ratings based on performance right now:
- 2020: Deep ruby color. Medium acidity, full body, Too rich for me. 85
- 2019: Deep ruby color. 87
- 2006: Deep garnet color. First bottle: Oxidised, almost only farmyard and vinegar aromas left. New bottle, best of the 3. 89 (645 views)
Tasted by Matt Scott on 6/24/2023 & rated 98 points: Decanted for three hours. Red pepper pesto, blackberries, red currants, lilies and red lava. Polished and very poised, with so much backbone and focus. Showing so many layers and persona. There’s a dark pudding aspect on the palate. Just gorgeous. Absolutely astounding. Possibly my favorite from here. Truly a core of strength and vitality. A classic in every manner. Drink 2026 - 2041. (2240 views)
Tasted by Matt Scott on 10/29/2022 & rated 98 points: Decanted for four hours. Dark and red fruits such as blackberries and raspberries, with red currants, leather, flower shop and river rocks. There’s some vanilla too. Very layered, long and the middle palate is exceptional. Fine, yet grainy tannins. Full body with this evident elegance. Structured and designed to cellar. This is similar to the ‘12 and ‘08, but even better. It remains one of the best bottles out of California. Drink 2026 -. (3296 views)
Tasted by wineappellation on 10/6/2022 & rated 91 points: High key floral, black and red fruits. Big and sweet. New oak. Sweet. (2362 views)
Tasted by fanglangzhe on 10/6/2022 & rated 85 points: dark fruits, jammy, mocha. (2548 views)
Tasted by Sonoma-W on 5/8/2022 & rated 95 points: Our first one - excellent. Oak is present; dark fruit; olde styler; some earthiness, charcoal. More powerful than expected (1733 views)

Peter Michael

Producer website

The Peter Michael Winery is the California outpost of British-born Sir Peter Michael who has shown a Midas touch for selecting brilliant winemakers, including Helen Turley, Mark Aubert, Luc Morlet and more recently Luc’s brother, Nicolas. The consistency of these offerings from the cool climate hillside vineyards in Knight’s Valley and the Sonoma Coast has been respected and cherished by each of these winemakers... All things considered, Peter Michael is one of the reference point wineries in California.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
