(601 views)
Tasted by Mark1npt on 4/26/2024 & rated 95 points: Blind. James' 2nd wine of the event.....1 hour decant and 1-2 hour slow ox.

Medium garnet in the glass. No Syrah stink but that black olive, meaty Syrah nose is unmistakable. The palate displays perfect balance with smooth, smokey dark red/black fruit and lots of black olive. It's smokey and meaty, but not in an overly strong way. I don't think this one gets any better than it is right now. Fooled us a bit early on thinking it was a Wash St Syrah.....it's extremely good and ready to drink in prime time right now. (775 views)
Tasted by sh6k on 4/16/2024 & rated 96 points: Wonderful powerful but not overpowering. Big nose and palate of dark fruits and tobacco and an intriguing herbal perfume (lavender?). Long finish. For me, everything that’s great about good rhone and syrahs — big flavor punch that still is able to meld with food (was great with a cheese / white asparagus / cream pasta and another dish with a vin jaune sauce). Tannins are definitely present — lots of time left on this one but for me the perfect drinking window. (1753 views)
Tasted by Adam T 12 on 4/6/2024 & rated 92 points: Better than my last bottle. Still alive and kicking. Definitely mature. (1904 views)
Tasted by p.schw. on 4/5/2024 & rated 93 points: Perfectly balanced. Plush and silky, still lots of fruit. There’s already a well integrated part of tertiary aromas - it’s got the perfect mouthfeel. I don’t see this getting any better. Will drink my last bottle within the next months (1915 views)
Tasted by nocowine on 3/29/2024: Earthy, spice, and subtle fruit on opening. Improves over time with increased complexity and more of the fruit. Excellent. Have 2 more bottles and will decant next one. (2295 views)
Tasted by Genghis88 on 3/16/2024 & rated 93 points: ****See previous notes

This is in the zone. It won't get any better. All tertiary tasting notes now.
Wine has faded to a beautiful looking translucent ruby-brown color.
Amazing mouth feel. Medium plus finish. Lots of leather. Just lovely.

Roast top sirloin tonight. (3030 views)
Tasted by Winer1956 on 3/9/2024 & rated 92 points: Decanted for 30 minutes from a 750 ML bottle. Mature, complex, and subtle. Pairs well with lamb chops. More refined than the Beaucastels of the 80s, which may appeal to some but not to others. The smell and taste profile include red fruits with forest floor and other subtle earthy elements.
Not likely to improve IMO. (3100 views)
Tasted by whitmanlholt on 2/17/2024 flawed bottle: Corked! Not the worst tainted bottle I've had, but clearly present. Dumped the bottle down the drain. Bummer. (3831 views)
Tasted by NY Wino on 2/16/2024 & rated 85 points: Another disappointing 2007 CDP and sadly this is one of my favorite wineries. This wine is plummy, over extracted, yet thin, tannic and the finish is a bit harsh. (3744 views)
Tasted by KL1975 on 2/16/2024 flawed bottle: Flawed bottle? Notes of rum pot and baked notes, port-like, alcohol very dominant, disappointing. Hope it was a defective bottle, because I have two bottles left… (3593 views)
Tasted by nkirsch on 1/14/2024 & rated 93 points: Opened 30 minutes before drinking but it would do better to be open for a couple of hours. It was a little tight and earthy to start but the fruit came out over time. (4827 views)
Tasted by melzar on 1/6/2024 & rated 91 points: Black olives on the nose. The palate is a fruit bomb, and this is just not my style . Reminds me of California Zinfandel. So totally unlike the Beaucastels of "89 And '90 which were, for me, memorable wines. This wine is well made and many of us will like this style. Therefore, the rating does not reflect my personal taste. For me it's an 87 at best. (4752 views)
Tasted by #1 or #2? on 1/3/2024 & rated 94 points: this continues to shine. nose is still fruit fwd with blueberries, blackcurrant, spice, pepper, and attractive herbal notes, earth, tobacco. palate is full bodied and smooth with sprightly acidity that keeps it fresh. berry fruit along with a strong herbal and mineral core. this is in a sweet spot that should appeal to fans in both the young and aged CdP camps. (4706 views)
Tasted by WineKnut on 12/23/2023 & rated 94 points: Last tasted in November of 2020. No formal notes. Stupendous balance with red fruits moving to the front over dried dark fruit flavors. Savory underpinnings add interest without overwhelming.

Beautiful. (3882 views)
Tasted by kfrench150 on 12/22/2023 & rated 96 points: En magnum. Double decanted. Deep ruby red with a steeped red rooibos tea rim, close to garnet but not quite. Feral nose full of raw meat, macerated crushed red berries, mild leather, kiln dried tobacco, spiced red plum, minerals and more. Gets fresher the deeper you sniff. Also loses the animaliness with more time in the glass. And a hint pf a medicinal note emerges with time as well that adds an additional layer to the complexity. Super smooth and long, melted tannins, full bodied, excellent fruit extract thay is ripe and sweet, and a tangy dry finish. Flavours are so well blended they're difficult to tease apart, but they include spiced black plum, soft red fruit leather, black tea, goji berry, iron, bison jus and dried sweet black cherry. Fully mature and drinking so lovely right now! Not quite at the fully dried and spiced red fruit stage yet; still containing vestiges of black fruits. So torn between wanting to sip and analyze this and just drink and enjoy it. Spectacular! Easy 96 points! (3842 views)
Tasted by Yagil on 12/20/2023 & rated 93 points: Chateauneuf du pape tasting (at my home): Appearance:
Deep, dark ruby with purple undertones
Nose:
Rich and complex, with aromas of ripe black fruit (blackberries, blueberries, plums), licorice, fig, spice, and earth
Palate:
Full-bodied and powerful, with a firm structure of tannins and acidity
Flavors of ripe black fruit, licorice, spice, and earth
Long and lingering finish
Overall:
A classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the 2007 Beaucastel is a powerful and elegant wine with a long aging potential. The wine is well-balanced, with ripe fruit flavors, firm tannins, and refreshing acidity. The nose is complex and inviting, with aromas of ripe black fruit, licorice, fig, spice, and earth. The palate is full-bodied and powerful, with flavors of ripe black fruit, licorice, spice, and earth. The finish is long and lingering. (3404 views)
Tasted by Gwen Lim on 12/16/2023 & rated 92 points: Was expecting funk after reading all the notes prior opening but total opposite - lovely bouquet upon uncorking that was alluring… and bottle breathed it for 3-4 hours. Delicious bottle and prefers this so much than the 03 bottle I just had. Fresh, optimal level of acity, dark berries, some spice - with a little finish of dry wood that tasted slightly odd at fist. Blew away after some time. (3435 views)
Tasted by Zed57 on 11/28/2023 & rated 93 points: It is settling nicely. Figs, blackberry and coffee glides effortlessly into your mouth with a persistent embracing finish. It’s in a good spot but we still have lots of time to enjoy this beauty (4614 views)
Tasted by Highlander on 11/18/2023: Have enjoyed 5 of these prior....opened this last bottle with a fairly easy pull on the cork....wine was not corked, but rather the seal must not have been perfect as the wine seemed older, over the hill and past its prime. Opened a second bottle shortly after and it was its normal beautiful self, so I will chalk this up to a bad, undersized cork. (4222 views)
Tasted by kfrench150 on 11/12/2023 & rated 94 points: Perfect cork 100+ years! Decanted for 2 hours. Quite a lot of sediment. Red rooibos tea core with a mahogany rim. Funky nose full of horsiness, sweaty saddle, dried red berries, stewed red plums, Christmas cake, macerated raisins and dried garrigue. Very complex! Medium full bodied, juicy acidity, gobs of fruit extract, high melted tannins and tre smooth with an off dry impression on the finish. A tad hot. Not nearly as funky on the palate as the nose. Macerated red berries, leather, sanded cedar, compost, funky organic earth and a snappy spicy finish. Lisa says "it's like dirty beautiful goodness"! Quite long and spicy warm on the finish. Seems a bit bretty and hot overall. Not the best showing based on past experience, but still worth 94 points to me. (4709 views)
Tasted by MC on 11/8/2023: Decanted 1 hour. Very nice at first taste, with dark red fruits, some earth and leather but in general still quite primary but in a nice way vs. previous bottle a year or so back. This did close just a bit after an hour (so 2 hours after decanting) but overall I like where this is now, and think it will improve. A- (4805 views)
Tasted by Turtlerider on 10/29/2023: Hmmm...This bottle had a serious funk on opening. Even after 2 hours it was still detectable, similar to the funk I get from the 96 Cos D'Estournal we have had on a few occasions. That takes at least 6 hours to fade and I read (after finishing my wine) that some people have allowed the 2007 Beaucastel to decant for 12 hours.

Overall, it was an OK glass of wine, but the funk distracted from the rest of the glass.

Maybe I'll try it again tonight. (4611 views)
Tasted by barryjkeller@gmail.com on 10/1/2023: Could not get past the alcohol :(
Tended also (I thought) to a porty style

Tasted by tantotinto on 9/20/2023 & rated 94 points: First taste immediately after decanting. Note from four years ago still applies. "Black fruit, soy, anise, mocha and a little pepper on the finish. Modest tannin and bracing acidity. Vibrant, elegant, refined and delicious." It may be even better now. No rush to drink the next. Garagiste (11/11/2008)
(BEAUCASTEL rouge) 2007 Beaucastel Dear Friends, Of what I've tasted from the Rhone in 2007, the potential for this wine is about as high as any vintage since 1978 - it's longevity may eclipse the 1990 and the 1989 and the world-wide demand for it is so much stronger than it was at the release of either of those years. That adds up to a scarce commodity and the 2007 is going to be highly sought after. Back in 1990, you didn't have the Chinese, tax-free Hong Kong and Russian markets (not to mention areas of South America) and (in addition) a much broader awareness of this wine in the US with a new CdP hungry class that has turned to the Rhone after tiring of and casting aside Shiraz, Napa Cabernet and even expensive Bordeaux - it all adds up to a market that is going to be squeezed beyond belief (Parker's 2007 vintage comments have not helped - I will refrain from re-printing them as I'm sure you've read them ad-nauseum by many merchants attempting to peddle 2007 wine - the reviews speak for themselves). Simple supply/demand economics dictates that this wine should increase in value and, from a collectable nature, it's a fairly strong bet (it wouldn't shock me if were talking about the 2007 Beaucastel at this time next year as a contender for many 2009 #1 spots). With that in mind... I will make this clear - my guess is that you will certainly find this cheaper elsewhere (but act quickly when you see it). I would expect prices in the $65-69 range from other reputable merchants - try Daniel Posner at Grapes, Basins, Binny's, Wine Library, Sam's or Premier Cru (although grey marketers are going to have a pickle this year as Vineyard Brands has clamped down on the grey marketing of this wine by a strong margin over the 2005 and 2006 - there will be very little in the grey market pipeline). You can also try direct importing the wine out of the UK at the $50-55 level but I know allocations in the UK are so tight on the rouge (you will find dozens of listings for the 2007 blanc) that few (if any) merchants are even willing to list the wine. While I cannot offer you the lowest price, I can offer you guaranteed provenance - the best available. If your intention is to cellar the wine, that should be worth something. The reviews of this wine have (so far) been stellar - you can check the various sources. THIS PARCEL IS NOT VIA THE GREY MARKET - it is a pristine lot as direct from the source as possible VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED as a painfully concentrated, organic expression of one of the great vintages of our generation: 2007 Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape (rouge) Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Rhone7511

2007 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape

__Vineyards__
The result of all the efforts and innovations of three generations of the Perrin family is evident when one has the pleasure of tasting a good vintage of Château de Beaucastel at its peak. If one word could describe the red wines of Beaucastel it would be "pure": because these wines are the natural expression of the place and the grapes from which they come.

In this case the vineyard is a patchwork of the 13 permitted grape varieties It covers 70 hectares/140 acres in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, between Orange and Avignon. The soil is the same porous, aerated blanket of Alpine diluvium (with rounded stones) over a base of Miocene marine limestone that exists elsewhere on the estate. The vines are on average 50 years old and yields are never more than 30 hectolitres per hectare and often much less. This is a vibrant and healthy vineyard due to years of organic cultivation.

__The Grapes and Blend__
The red wine of Beaucastel, as is the Coudoulet de Beaucastel, is structured, intense yet lean, partially thanks to the large percentage of Mourvedre - about 30% - in the final blend. Its austere tannic backbone and resistance to oxidation help Beaucastel age gracefully. Grenache (30%) contributes a warming sensation of ripe fruit and a velvety feeling in the mouth. Syrah at 10%, and Muscardin and Vaccarese with around 5% each, add colour and spicy aromas while increasing the wines ageing potential. 5% of Cinsault is added for softness and its special bouquet. The remainder is made up of small quantities of the seven other varieties allowed in Châteauneuf du Pape (Vaccarèse, Terret noir, Muscardin, Picpoul, Picardan, Bourboulenc and Roussanne). They add that extra note of graceful complexity which make Château de Beaucastel such an extraordinary wine. Once the flash heating method, as described on the first page of the brochure, has been accomplished, Beaucastel Rouge follows a more or less classic vinification. Most of the varieties are fermented separately until the malo-lactic fermentation is completed, at which point they are blended after comprehensive tastings.

The young wine then matures in large oak barrels of 40 hl /1000 gal. for about 12 months. Fining is carried out with egg whites, and then the wine is bottled and left to age one more year in Beaucastel’s cellars before release.
The Grenache and the Cinsault give the wine its colour, intensity and softness. The Mourvèdre, Syrah, Muscardin and Vaccarèse give the wine its renowned ageing potential and dark, classic character. The Counoise, Picpoul and other varieties provide freshness, fragrance and aromatic quality.

__Vinification__
Hand picking, then sorting of grapes upon arrival at the cellar. The skins of the grapes are heated briefly to 80 °C / 176 °F and then cooled to 20 °C /6O °F before the bunches drop into enamel tiled vats for twelve days' maceration. The free-run juice is then drained off and the must in the vat pressed in a pneumatic wine-press.

__Tasting notes__
Colour: very dark red.
Nose: red fruits, leather, truffles, musk.
Palate: spices, pepper, liquorice.

__To serve__
Serve at 15 °C / 59 °F in fine glasses.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
