Community Tasting Notes (average 91.8 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 184 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by thalver on 1/8/2023 & rated 93 points: This was a pleasant surprise, a bottle 4 years ago seemed to be fading, this one was going strong ....this bottle showed an expressive nose, mostly resolved tannin, some blue fruit as well as more savory character. More mellow than when young, and more interesting (538 views)
(1360 views)
Tasted by bablues on 8/29/2019 & rated 92 points: Big dark fruits with some subtle pepper on the nose. The palate was rich and smooth with more dark flavors. More complex than my last taste and still has some time to go (1446 views)
Tasted by CWilliam on 6/3/2019 & rated 93 points: Last of 4 bottles purchase in 2010 from Wine Access.

Cork broke so had to pour into a decanter. Great nose - meat, saline, blackberry, blueberry (only with airtime) and floral undertones.

On palate, medium+ body, medium+ acidity, integrated tannins and long finish. Flavor profile was blackberry, dried cherry & tobacco. Very enjoyable and this wine has aged extremely well. 93+/- (1689 views)
Tasted by thalver on 3/13/2018: This bottle was pleasant, with fruit less intense from time, but no significant bottle bouquet or development of tertiary flavors. It seems to be fading rather than blooming. Bottles 2 1/2 and 3 years ago showed more verve and interest. 88ish (past bottles up to 94ish) (2846 views)
Tasted by BklynNeophyte on 1/15/2018: Big, rich and balanced. Maybe a bit too big for me, but otherwise all the good syrah notes. (2951 views)
Tasted by David_K on 1/8/2018 & rated 90 points: Picked this up on a whim since I've enjoyed some of Ramey's recent syrahs, and wanted to try one with a little age on it. This was good, but didn't show as much character as the 2013 Sonoma Coast bottling. It's very dense and dark, and still tannic, and somehow manages to wear its 15% alcohol comfortably. There is just not the meaty, gamey qualities I really like about the more recent Rameys. (2146 views)
Tasted by thalver on 9/20/2017: Revisiting an old friend. This bottle popped and poured. The cork did crumble on opening. (note to self to be more patient with the next bottle) This bottle may have been just a bit shier than a great bottle two years ago, but seems not to be at the end of its road. medium bodied. Fairly expressive aromatically. More savory than fruity. 92ish (2318 views)
Tasted by alpha_ori on 7/3/2017 & rated 92 points: 3rd of July Dranking (Mah house): I have had this wine three times in the past ten years, and I remember each distinctly. The first time was soon after its release, in a tasting of Syrahs. I bought it on the recommendation of the person on the floor at The Wine Club. It was very curious, dominated by garrigue and herbs in a way that was unfamiliar to me in domestic Syrahs.

I was interested in seeing how it would age, so I bought another bottle and held it. Unexpectedly, a friend brought it to a blind tasting about a year ago. Unfortunately, it was corked.

I finally unvelied my long-held bottle last night. It was delicious! The strange weediness was gone, and revealed was a beautiful, balanced, intriguing Syrah. Love it! (2865 views)
Tasted by wiscgrad on 4/18/2017 & rated 92 points: what everyone else said. very deep black dark fruit. amazing depth. new world but quite delicious. drink now (2057 views)
Tasted by theoves on 3/31/2017 & rated 93 points: Great first impression with the nose. Wonderful dark fruits. Beautiful, dark complex wine. Open and drink now. (1987 views)
Tasted by Mr.Overhill on 11/13/2016 & rated 92 points: Deep, rich and refined, with wonderful layers of blackberry, bacon and slight iodine, with great undertones of pepper and other spices. The tannins have melded wonderfully and the finish is long and filled with rich black fruits. The cork was problematic, crumbling upon extraction. Drink now or hold for another few years. (2491 views)
Tasted by PMJak11 on 9/4/2016 & rated 92 points: Perfect compliment to a big win on poker night! Full of fruit, with strong plum and cherry flavors. Extremely smooth but a tad weak on the finish. Was pleasantly surprised and impressed! (2410 views)
Tasted by rosenst1 on 8/15/2016 & rated 91 points: Had to decant as the cork broke in half. Initially this is lovely - deep thick rich and smooth, classic Syrah white pepper. Slowly loses its equilibrium as the tannins come out and fruit recedes. Drink up.
93 for first half hour then upper 80s. Average to 91 (2123 views)
Tasted by D3S on 6/19/2016 & rated 93 points: Nice nose, fruit and well balanced and integrated tannins with good finish. Drinking well now. (2074 views)
Tasted by Ecoenophile on 5/6/2016 & rated 93 points: No detailed notes... but enjoyed all the typical Ramey rich syrah fullness. A treat. (2104 views)
Tasted by CWilliam on 4/17/2016: Decanted for 1 hour and paired with grilled pork tenderloin.

Burgundy in color. Beautiful nose - floral, saline, black cherry & tobacco. On palate, very balanced with medium body, high acidity and long finish with integrated tannins. Black cherry, saline, tart cherry on palate. This wine really needed 2+ hours of air to sing - no "heat" signature as I noted 4+ years ago. Great wine. Sad nothing past '07.

92-93+ Would buy again. (1727 views)
Tasted by Skip4wine on 3/20/2016 & rated 92 points: As a follow-up from my 3/2014 note I am glad I waited to open this bottle. Still getting better. A little more of a fruit profile on my last bottle but now more balanced and delicious. The tannins are completely integrated. Still at least 5 years and I'm waiting at least 2 for my last bottle (although its good to go right now) (1432 views)
Tasted by John McCabe on 2/13/2016 & rated 93 points: Lovely richness, just a hint if spice. Nice style. (1622 views)
Tasted by bonedoc on 1/24/2016 & rated 93 points: Sweet dark fruit with salty olive tapenade. Great aromatics. Nicely done! (1462 views)
Tasted by signotim on 12/21/2015 & rated 93 points: Wow! This wine really blossomed on night 2. Stored in the fridge overnight and brought out, let it come to cellar temp. Huge nose of red fruit, licorice, menthol. Super silky on the palate, full bodied, rich, and lasting on the finish. This has a few more years and is in prime drinking window with a good decant (1219 views)
Tasted by chaos on 12/20/2015 & rated 90 points: Drink up. No longer has the acidity needed to make it interesting. (1405 views)
Tasted by thalver on 8/23/2015: Double decanted back into the bottle, and poured almost immediately. This was aromatically wonderful from the get-go...smooth, balanced, starting to show some tertiary flavors of earth and meat. After a couple hours open, the initially absent tannin did become more pronounced, and it faded a bit aromatically. In hindsight, the double decant was probably unnecessary. There may be some bottle variation, or perhaps it has emerged from a slumber. A bottle a year ago seemed thin and uninteresting. While this is certainly less robust than in past years, it was delicious (1380 views)
Tasted by Reblin on 7/21/2015 & rated 92 points: I believe this wine has improved in the past year. Rich fruit; smooth. An excellent wine for the price. (1404 views)
Tasted by bonedoc on 4/7/2015 flawed bottle: Corked (1771 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
