Tasted by WineKnut on 3/15/2024 & rated 92 points: Got into this one the same day I brought it home. Left upright at room temperature for about four hours before decanting.

Color is garnet with no bricking. Clarity was compromised. Probably due to impatience and some stirring during transport. Sound cork showed minimal color up to 1cm.

Nose is a little lean. Cherry and new leather. Palate is where I enjoyed this most. Cherry, dried cherry, new leather, stone, licorice and still some tannic grip.

Quite enjoyable still, though for me there is no basis for comparison.

I'll enjoy my next bottle soon. Drink. (605 views)
Tasted by Dr_Bob on 1/6/2024 & rated 92 points: Popped poured decanted in glass; initially surprisingly fruit forward nose of candied cherries; tart tannins; having with beef stroganoff; may update with later notes as it decants. (960 views)
Tasted by williamc on 9/20/2023 & rated 90 points: Required a fair amount of air.
Upon opening it was barnyard and unpleasant. Two hours in the decanter and it lost its funkiness and gained a sweet fruited profile with an incredibly soft palate. A delicate cherry and raspberry with a faint potpourri. That being said, drink now. It felt like it was on the decline. (1258 views)
Tasted by Papies on 5/13/2023 & rated 92 points: It’s been a good 5 years since we had this last ( Papies 91-92) and th Ewing continues to deliver. A bit more spicy, more herby and less heavy on the fruit and generally on 1998 these guys made one of th Elmore elegant CdP away from the Parker doctrine of use the ripe year to make a bomb ( 2007 we feel has it too in many producers and unsurprisingly not at Clos Des Papes) . Well mannered and well aged and and easy 92. (1970 views)
Tasted by ShadowIII on 4/17/2023 & rated 92 points: light ruby with brick edges, complex nose with currants, spice, herbs, tobacco, leather, tar, integrated tannins, good finish, still going strong (1680 views)
Tasted by kostaslonis on 3/4/2023: Random wines tried during service (Oinsocent): Brought to drink at Oinoscent during service.
decanted 19.30, tasted 22.00 (cellar)
The wine shows fully developed character.
In the nose, the wine is earthy, spicy, herb field summer warmth, dried cherry notes, brett notes, sous bois and coffee
Palate showing juicy tannins, gamey notes, bright, lively, smooth texture, nice mouthfeel, red cherries and raspberries, medium body and finish (1611 views)
Tasted by olioli on 2/22/2023 & rated 93 points: Accord superbe avec burgers de Wagyu!
Sur son plateau mais plus pour longtemps.. (1512 views)
Tasted by JRockEsq on 1/15/2023 & rated 89 points: Method: pop and pour; great fill; great looking cork; Glassvin Universal glass

Look: Plum/garnet with a decent amount of bricking at edge

Nose: black licorice, cherry, mulling spice, light menthol, light hay, bit of cedar

Palate: cherry, tobacco, medium+ finish of bay leaf, lack licorice, nutmeg, cinnamon; dry; full body; medium velvety and somewhat drying tannin; medium acidity

Overall thoughts: Great nose, but the palate didn't especially impress me with structure or flavor. Still, very good wine. (1419 views)
Tasted by pitcrewstrategist on 8/20/2022 & rated 96 points: Opened amd filtered through ullo, let sit for an.hour. Bouquet of barn (we own horses), sage and rosemary, cherries and raspberries. This bottle is wow. Full-bodied palate of red fruits and smoke, but lifht. This finishes with medium-length and with a touch of good acidity. An excellent bottle at peak for 23 years! Those with any left should be enjoying them now! (1750 views)
Tasted by BVal on 6/18/2022 & rated 94 points: Color/App: medium/light ruby core -> fully mature, garnet/brick rim; medium+ viscosity. Bouquet of leather, bramble, sage and rosemary, roasted cherries and a reasonable dose of barnyard funk. This bottle is showing perfectly but I wouldn't push any others further (if I had any left!). Full-bodied palate of red fruits, garrigue, spice and a little smoke, this finishes with medium-length and with a touch of bitters and good acidity. An excellent bottle at peak for 24 years old. Those with any left should be enjoying them. 93-94; call this one 93.5; tasted with consistent notes over 3 hours. (1816 views)

Tasted by Duncan H on 10/16/2020 & rated 88 points: A lovely surprise - still alive but drink up in my view!

A gentle raspberry nose and soft palate. Probably a bit past its best, but enjoyable nevertheless. (3625 views)
Tasted by bjecjohnson on 9/13/2020 & rated 95 points: Wine was fairly light in color upon opening, but really evolved as the evening went on and paired beautifully with six hour smoked spare ribs. Wine was opened to let it breathe and taste and vacuum sealed for six hours prior to dinner. Also opened a 1995 Telegraphe La Crau magnum and both wines were a hit. Was happy to see the Clos des Papes still has some years left. (3618 views)
Tasted by Nahebub on 6/21/2020: Füllstand und Korken waren einwandfrei. Der erste Schluck war enttäuschend. Der Wein zeigte sich viel zu sauer. Die Farbe war hell rot. Kaum Frucht. Mit mehr Luft legte sich das Saure und die Frucht zeigte sich. Trotzdem wirkte der Wein fad, auch am nächsten Tag. Ich bin auf die nächste gespannt. Keine Bewertung (3057 views)
Tasted by ejmwine on 5/30/2020 & rated 89 points: Given some of the other comments I think is is now in decline. It was enjoyable but not exciting. I would drink up. (1952 views)
Tasted by JDLynn on 5/25/2020: Had it with Lamb shanks in spiced sauce and roasted sweet potatoes. Sat outside and enjoyed late sun on bank holiday evening (1886 views)
Tasted by TomTom on 5/1/2020: Relatively simple and just not the tertiary flavors I would have expected at 22 years. Not a bad wine, just not great at this point. (1959 views)
Tasted by SGoenophile on 4/25/2020 & rated 93 points: After disappointments with 2 prematurely aged Clos des Papes 1998s and a mediocre 2005, my expectations were low for this bottle. It came as a big relief that this bottle turned out really well, more in line with consistently glowing critic reviews than my previous personal experiences. The cork was in a good condition. Wine was clear (not cloudy as with previous bottles) with minimal sediments. Mid ruby in colour. Soft and light body. Graceful and elegant, almost Burgundian in character. Intact fruit, ripe but not that dense. Relatively low acidity. Has the depth and complexity that age brings. One of the best Southern Rhône wines I’ve had but this is probably already at its peak. (1818 views)
Tasted by tomlee on 4/11/2020 & rated 96 points: Light red in color. 14% ABV. Tremendous nose of red fruits, roasted herbs, blood and garrigue. Medium body with perfect acidity. Powerful and concentrated. Clean and well balanced. Somewhat rustic with an appealing roasted quality to the fruit. Kirsch, plums, herbes de Provence and a bit of earth on the palate. Exceptional length on the finish. Great showing from a favorite producer in just a stellar vintage. Well stored bottles should drink nicely for at least another 2-4 years. (1965 views)
Tasted by PSPatrick on 1/31/2020 & rated 89 points: Wine dinner hosted by my dear friend Rainer. Wine #10 (non-blind). Tasted alongside the pleasurable 1985 and the legendary, structured 1990. Unbelievable how different the three wines are!

The 1998 was medium to dark ruby in colour and offered stewed, raisiny fruit, cherry liqueur, plum, garrigue, chocolate and spices on the nose and palate, with good acidity, well-integrated tannin, some heat from the alcohol and very good length. This 1998 was ripe, broad and alcoholic. A decent CdP still, but my least favourite of the three vintages we tasted today. (2104 views)
Tasted by beatles on 1/17/2020 & rated 95 points: Light on it's feet, very elegant, en danseuse with sous bois and an educated sweet Grenache; Mourvèdre provides a mineral feel, this is quite extraordinary. Tested over two days, no signs of fatigue, virtually unchanged.

Tasted by UpfromtheCellar on 1/1/2020 & rated 91 points: Classy wine. What it's lost in pure power it more than makes up for with elegance, poise and balance. Medium weight, no browning around the edges, earth/spice/cedar/fruits on the nose, nice garrigue on the palate. Finish is warm and long. My "wine of the year" back in 2014, now at 22 years young this wine is in its fading years but with proper storage will deliver great drinking for many years to come. Not sure I would pay the $125 this bottle sells for now (although in a magnum format it might be worth it...) but a great wine nonetheless. (1723 views)
Tasted by Philip67 on 10/12/2019 & rated 95 points: Wow! A complete surprise, really stunning. Just reminded me of Rayas. I have drunk and enjoyed Clos des Papes on many occasions and thoroughly enjoyed every bottles - without being wowed. This was different. As I opened it I was worried that it may be a little tired and past its best - absolutely not! The wine sang from the first sip through to the end. A really great wine. This has all the weight, richness and sweet fruit (damson, raspberry, strawberry) that one would expect but accompanied by a kind of ethereal luminosity and power that I have never seen from this producer before but did experience with a Rayas 2007 a year or so ago. This character is also similar to my experiences with Giacosa, different grape but same mix of lifted elegance power and fruit. It is complex and long. drinking perfectly now but I suspect it will go on for many years. (2317 views)
Tasted by hargy on 8/22/2019 & rated 92 points: magnums - still going although the fruit has all but faded - now a gentle giant but what is there is complex and very delicious - drink soon (2335 views)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
