Community Tasting Notes (average 90.5 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 58 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by maderay on 6/18/2020 & rated 87 points: Lost most of its flavors (911 views)
Tasted by M.Batard on 11/7/2019 & rated 91 points: Still wonderful. Velvet smooth. Black fruit and violets. Long finish. (922 views)
Tasted by thh18731 on 6/30/2019 & rated 94 points: Finally opened the 2007 last night. Happily surprised that the wine has matured into a delicious layered complex wine. The fruit is still well represented and balanced by the tannins that have mellowed. (958 views)
Tasted by M.Batard on 11/3/2017 & rated 90 points: Velvety smooth, but seems to be losing the precise complexity of earlier bottles. This time against chorizo sausage and rosemary-rubbed chicken, mixed grill, as well as cheese course. Time to drink up? (1406 views)
Tasted by Tonythefish on 4/16/2016 & rated 91 points: Lots of dark fruit and always has great colow. Lots of chocolate on the back end and well rounded finish (1725 views)
Tasted by Tonythefish on 4/3/2016 & rated 89 points: Chocolate covered fruit and smooth finish. Easy to pop and pour wine that can be enjoyed by all (1443 views)
Tasted by Rich S on 3/28/2015 & rated 89 points: Dark purple color. Big nose of cassis, milk chocolate covered cherries and a bit of vanilla oak. More of the same on the palate with a ripe dark fruit, purple florals and milk chocolate flavor profile. Medium- acid and tannin. Smooth wine and the finish is enjoyable. A very tasty wine to sit and sip but a bit simple. I do not see this wine developing much more and the structure isn't there for the long haul. (2032 views)
Tasted by M.Batard on 6/12/2014 & rated 91 points: Steaks off the grill with Lee. This remains a favorite, and right up his alley too. Black fruit, violets, and spice. Long finish. (2808 views)
Tasted by que syrah syrah on 4/2/2014 & rated 90 points: Still excellent but may begin to fade over the next two to three years. Drink up. (2863 views)
Tasted by corkscrews on 11/8/2013 & rated 91 points: Consistently good stuff. Very good blend. www.winelx.com (2913 views)
Tasted by M.Batard on 5/11/2013 & rated 91 points: Decanted two hours ahead. This is drinking very well now. Same layered complexity, with new note of spice. Once again, paired with lamb, this time butterflied leg, marinated & grilled. Raves from the crowd, most of whom preferred it to the Riu Priorat of same vintage. (3529 views)
Tasted by Tonythefish on 4/17/2013 & rated 90 points: Chocolate. Dark purple and has softened with even more time
(2929 views)
Tasted by M.Batard on 2/9/2013 & rated 91 points: Savory, complex, and long finish. Paired extremely well with 'mad' Morrocan lamb baked in spices and couscous. (2424 views)
Tasted by corkscrews on 12/2/2012 & rated 90 points: A nose of dark fruit, dark amber in color. A full bodied Bordeaux blend, blackberry, black cherries, spice and some vanilla, not as perfect as the 2006 but very good with one of the coolest bottles in the industry. I was lucky to spend some time with John Caldwell in November at a tasting in his Cave, great place. (2538 views)
Tasted by DonWinspear on 9/17/2012 & rated 90 points: Similar to previous notes. Last bottle.... sigh.. Dark fruit predominate with notes of mocha. Tannins are smooth and soft. A medium finish that is beautifully balanced and wonderfully representative of the wine. (2567 views)
Tasted by Tonythefish on 7/27/2012 & rated 91 points: Super dark and inky color. Nose still had some chocolate, but upon first smell it was truly Rocket Science! Nice long finish and very good. Not as good as 2006, but still enjoyable! (2199 views)
Tasted by M.Batard on 7/4/2012 & rated 91 points: This was lovely, racy, attention grabbing. Lots of red and black fruit on the nose, cherries especially, along with mocha. Rich and complex on palate, and long finish. Excellent with grilled lamb, and out shone the Mi Sueno we had alongside. (2416 views)
Tasted by DonWinspear on 6/24/2012 & rated 91 points: Inky color - dark and rich. Very similar notes from last tasting. Nose of bright fruit with sublime cocoa and spice backdrop. Similar palate with slight more pronounced mocha, spice, hint of anise, red cherry. Solid structure that went up against grilled steak very well. Medium finish that conjures reflection rather than finishing the sip. (2089 views)
Tasted by nfafoglia on 2/10/2012 & rated 90 points: Nose of cranberry, coffee, and menthol. Quite tannic on the palate with muted slightly bitter red fruit. (2235 views)
Tasted by DonWinspear on 2/10/2012 & rated 91 points: Garnet color in the glass. Nose of light red fruit with additional notes of mocha, earth. The palate is soft and relaxed - just enough tannins to give it a backbone. Bright fruit with hints of cherry, mocha, white pepper. Balanced acidity. (2338 views)
Tasted by Tonythefish on 1/6/2012 & rated 90 points: Chocolate. Dark purple and has softened with time. Just as good as ever (2460 views)
Tasted by Tonythefish on 8/28/2011 & rated 90 points: A very good wine with depth and a velvet finish. Nice hints of chocolate (3286 views)
Tasted by Dasher on 8/5/2011 & rated 91 points: Very intresting bottle of wine. I can't wait to enoy more of it soon. (3385 views)
Tasted by CounselorEp on 7/31/2011: Enjoyed this wine with my wife with a hearty Italian pasta. Chocolate and cherry nose. Very approachable wine, not too big, and drinking well now. Not too tannic. I agree with drinking window and will enjoy this wine over the next two yes. (3335 views)
Tasted by slaintebmr on 5/30/2011 & rated 90 points: Chocolate. More akin to the 2005 Rocket than the 2006. Doesn't make Jen hallucinate as much as the 2006 either. She still loves it, and it moves her soul. (3988 views)

About this Wine

Red Blend

.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
