Community Tasting Notes (average 92.3 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 304 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by guitarguy on 4/16/2024 & rated 91 points: Settle Ponti has always been a polarizing wine for me, sometimes Bretty, occasional TCA, sometimes just not good and sometimes really good. This was a good bottle with juicy berry and herbs in the nose with berry, leather and a pleasant acidic bite. (658 views)
Tasted by guitarguy on 2/12/2024 & rated 90 points: Highish volatile acidity with a silky mouthfeel, keytone and herbs in the nose. A little thin. I’d drink within 2024 (994 views)
Tasted by DravlaH on 1/2/2024 & rated 93 points: Drinks great, but its now Jan 2 so this is from memory! (1172 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 11/5/2023 & rated 92 points: I probably like these more than others. Needs to have a short decant, and is a little old world, but is refiined and smooth. (1473 views)
Tasted by cweiner on 9/16/2023 & rated 92 points: Unfortunately, the end. (1482 views)
Tasted by cweiner on 9/10/2023 & rated 92 points: Lovely. Drink up. (1211 views)
Tasted by cweiner on 7/26/2023 & rated 94 points: Will only improve over time. (1253 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 6/22/2023: last bottle and like saying goodbye to a friend. should have decanted but still quite good. remains very deep, dark and rich with many years to go. still a little bit of tannin. excellent (1330 views)
Tasted by cweiner on 6/16/2023 & rated 94 points: Decant first (1078 views)
Tasted by cweiner on 6/12/2023 & rated 92 points: Lot's of time left. (953 views)
Tasted by cweiner on 5/20/2023 & rated 92 points: Should have decanted. (945 views)
Tasted by thalver on 4/30/2023: decanted for about 45 minutes and poured. Initially, this showed absolutely nothing on the nose, but had nice mouthfeel and was flavorfull and a bit tannic on the palate. After about two hours open, a nose suddenly appeared out of no where. I think this is in its drinking window, but could certainly go a bit longer (959 views)
Tasted by hsacks on 4/15/2023 & rated 93 points: Similar to the 1/28/17 bottle. (878 views)
Tasted by DFBW on 4/11/2023 & rated 92 points: My last bottle and it still had plenty of legs left. Drank along side a Biondi Santi BdM 2006 and Conterno Cicala 2012 and it didn't wilt. Interesting to try Barolo, Brunello and a Bordeaux blend wine from Tuscany together. Lovely wine with great fruit, smooth and a very pleasing velvety texture. Must get more.. (919 views)
Tasted by LuckyLars on 2/10/2023 & rated 93 points: Showing a bit of maturity on the edge and a dark core, it does not appear to be a 15 year old wine. The nose has elements of dark fruit, tobacco and a hint of tar. Flavours include cherry, dark fruit and chocolate. Delicious with a very long finish. (1164 views)
Tasted by DravlaH on 1/21/2023 & rated 94 points: Drank for Xmas dinner. Fantastic! (1166 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 11/21/2022 & rated 92 points: Solid, smooth, pairs well with fruit. Reasonably full-bodied. Drinks to its price point. (1508 views)
Tasted by markcic on 11/8/2022 & rated 91 points: After lunch we all went back to the office to work on the budget so we decided to open a bottle. This bottle was much better than the one we had 6 months ago. We pnp'd. The nose was plum and tobacco. The palate was dark plums, tobacco, some leather and hints of spice leading to a moderate to long finish. (1485 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 11/6/2022: I thought this was fantastic
Great fruit
Balanced acid and tannin

Tasted by rjmp96 on 9/21/2022 & rated 93 points: This one still has a lot of ripe fruit. Plenty of spice box, dark chocolate & cassis still, but there is development too in the mushroom, licorice, dried cedar, juniper and incense. Very well balanced on the palate, tannins still fuzzy but lifted enough to match the richness of the fruit. Has a sanguine tinge on the finish that is crazy good but the alcohol/spice is there as well. A little bit more full throttle but this has aged very well. . 45 Merlot, 40 Cab, 15 PV. (602 views)
Tasted by winelover1808 on 9/3/2022 & rated 91 points: lots of plum, dark red fruits; tannins are medium - not the smoothest finish; pretty big core of fruit which made this a solid enjoyable wine with a marinated skirt steak. i dont see this getting better with age so good time to drink up (1589 views)
Tasted by DFBW on 7/15/2022 & rated 93 points: I keep dipping back into this every now and then and expecting the wine to show some more age each time but it never seems to and I would say this has still got a few years to run. Shame it's taken me 5 bottles to find that out so I've only got one left which I will bury for a while. Bordeaux style Tuscan with a beautiful rich berry nose and great silky smooth fruit on the palate. Lingers long in the mouth. (1690 views)
Tasted by KL1975 on 7/12/2022 & rated 92 points: More Bordeaux than Tuscany (different to a Giusto di Notri 2007 some weeks ago), still quite young and 5-10 years left for further development, 92+ (1543 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 6/7/2022 & rated 92 points: Great pizza wine tonight. Dense and powerful black berries and cherries throughout with espresso and dark chocolate, all with very good concentration and freshness. Very good now. (2240 views)
Tasted by markcic on 5/2/2022 & rated 88 points: I popped the cork about 1.5 hours before dinner. It tasted harsh and tannic. I poured some through an aerator into a decanter and let it sit. Still would not soften up. Put the cork back in and let it stand in the fridge overnight. Tried it again last night. It did soften up and became drinkable but not great. I had a glass and used the rest for cooking. What I drank had dark berries, plums and hints of menthol. (1875 views)

(ORENO Sette Ponti) Ponti Dear Friends, We’ve had an unusual number of requests over the past few weeks for the 2006, 2007 and 2008 vintages of this wine and that usually means one of two things - people are price shopping (spurred by multiple retailer offers) or there’s a new review out there somewhere (or both). We try to listen to your requests, so here goes... I’ve tasted all three vintages of Sette Ponti Oreno mentioned above and, call me crazy, but 2006 is the most serious (by a wide margin). 2006 is one of the finest overall Tuscan vintages of the last few decades and the Oreno took full advantage. While the 2007 version is almost too over the top, the 2006 gets it quite right – tannic and distinguished with a long future ahead. It’s the most complete Oreno yet made and the same can be said for many Tuscan wines in 2006 (a vintage that is closer in style to 2005 in Bordeaux, where 2007 in Tuscany is closer to 2009 in Bordeaux – as far as 2008, I do have a soft-spot for the delicate and unusual style of the year but be warned many of the wines are for those that lean toward the esoteric and not for those that yearn for chewy fruit): I urge you to look up community notes as well. Tenuta Sette Ponti

Producer website

U.S. Importer (Addt'l Info)

Tenuta Sette Ponti lies in the heart of the Chianti area, not far away from Arezzo. The oldest vines were planted in 1935 by Duke Amadeo d’Aosto vice-king of Ethiopia, in remembrance of a victory. It has been the property of different members of the Italian royal family until the end of the 1950s, when architect Alberto Moretti bought it from Princesses Margherita and Maria Cristina di Savoia d’Aosta, daughters of Vittorio Emanuele III, king of Italy from 1900 to 1946. The Moretti family started working at the estate as soon as the end of autumn 1957. In 1996, Antonio Fioravante Moretti, Alberto’s son, took over. He was the leader of a group of companies in the sector of luxury and fashion, but decided to follow his passion. He decided to bottle the wine directly at the estate. His 1998 Crognolo and his 1999 Oreno have both become symbols of the oenological vocation of Tuscany. The winemaker is Carlo Ferrini, one of the best in Italy, who also works for other prestigious Tuscan estates such as Fattoria di Petrolo, Talenti and Brancaia. The vineyards comprise 150 acres. The estate, like many Tuscan estates, is multi-dimensional. The huge 750-acre property incorporates a stud farm for race horses, breeding of native Tuscan Chiana cattle, a preserve for a rare breed of pig, and fields of sun flowers and maze.

The Sette Ponti estate lies fifteen miles northwest of the city of Arezzo in the heart of the Chianti zone. The name Sette Ponti translates as "seven bridges" and refers to the seven bridges crossing the Arno River on the road from Arezzo to Florence.
Curiously, in a region where 200-year-old wineries are commonplace, Sette Ponti didn't even make wine until 1997, when owner, Dr. Antonio Moretti, asked his good friend Piero Antinori if he thought the estate could produce great wines. Antinori's response, loosely translated, was "Ya, sure, ya betcha!"

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.
