Tasted by TMOVino2 on 6/15/2020 & rated 92 points: This vintage is very Bordeaux like on the nose and palate. Aromas of cherry, tobacco, clay, cedar, baking spice. The palate is fresh blackberry, olive, unsmoked cigar. Good tannins and acid right now. Much different than more recent vintages I’ve had. (609 views)
Tasted by tjolly123 on 8/23/2015 & rated 93 points: I really enjoyed this. It had a fruity nose to it and I thought I wouldn't enjoy it as much, but had a real nice finish. Definitely a Merlot I plan to go back to. (2256 views)
Tasted by Rich S on 11/28/2014 & rated 90 points: Popped and poured. Dark purple color. Big nose of cassis, blueberry, vanilla, toasted oak and some mocha. A touch of heat coming through on the nose as well. Similar flavors on the palate with blueberry pie flavors joined with a touch of pepper and some charred oak and dark chocolate flavors on the back end. Medium tannins with low to medium acidity. A very tasty wine to sip on after a meal. Paired very well with high cacao dark chocolate. (2562 views)
Tasted by hailcesare on 8/18/2014 & rated 91 points: Big and bold merlot. Chewy, dark fruit - think cherry lozenges. Bouquet of honey, vanilla and gentle notes of rosemary. Rounded and smooth, medium tannins, ready to drink. (2727 views)
Tasted by BizzyCouple on 5/17/2014 & rated 90 points: - Garnet color with medium forming legs and aromas of butterscotch, strawberry jam, rose and tea. It's somewhat balanced and has flavours of oak and dusty with a medium/full body. Satin-Like texture with a medium finish. (2839 views)
Tasted by MoCellar on 3/17/2014 & rated 92 points: Very nice wine (2802 views)
Tasted by GoBlue2002 on 2/27/2014 & rated 91 points: Store Tasting (Roseville, MN): 97% merlot with 3% cab franc.
This merlot sports an enveloping, St. Emilion-type nose of pencil lead and spice, but on the palate it is distinctly Napa, showcasing a level of silky glycerin almost making it seem sweet. The finish is of medium length.
This is definitely not a merlot for everyone, and it's just starting to hit its drink window 2014-2020. (1560 views)
Tasted by Presidio Wine Bunker on 2/8/2014 & rated 90 points: Tasted blind along with 7 other Merlots. Winner of the night followed closely by Miner and Brian Benson. Like most Ehlers it's very approachable now with definite aging potential. 90 today and I wouldn't be surprised to see that improve considerably over next 5 years. (1109 views)
Tasted by yaki on 11/19/2013 & rated 90 points: Dark ruby color with a mostly opaque core. Bouquet displays a complex mix of cranberry, black cherry, plum, menthol, leather and vanilla. The palate is a bit earthy with more fruit and new oak. There is some heat in the wine. The mid-palate feels a tad hollow. The tannins are elevated and rather drying in the finish. The wine has a long finish but the medium-high acidity currently feels a bit out of balance with the rest of its components. (960 views)
Tasted by K28226 on 4/11/2013 & rated 88 points: Needs time. Tart and astringent followed by heat. Red fruit, cherry emerge as wine opens up (899 views)
Tasted by NickHBailey on 12/25/2012 & rated 89 points: Good, but not great like the 2009. Got it on pre-release and it tastes young. Heavy, fruity and not much character drawn out yet. Well balanced. A least a year before the next bottle. Great value for Napa Merlot. (1052 views)

Ehlers Estate

Producer website
Ehlers Estate, a historic vineyard property that dates back to 1886, continues today as a steward of the land, creating wines that are reflective of its unique terroir and the passion of its viticultural team headed by winemaker Kevin Morrisey. Certified 100% organic on July 1, 2008 by the California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF), Ehlers Estate crafts expressive and vibrant Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Sauvignon Blanc from vineyard to bottle.

Merlot

Merlot is a dark blue–colored wine grape variety, that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. The name Merlot is thought to be a diminutive of merle, the French name for the blackbird, probably a reference to the color of the grape. Its softness and "fleshiness", combined with its earlier ripening, makes Merlot a popular grape for blending with the sterner, later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon, which tends to be higher in tannin.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
