Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.5 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 88 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Eric on 2/10/2024: ESTG does Pegau-Palooza (Seattle, WA, USA): Leaner, more structured, dry, very peppery. In comparison the 88 and 90 this comes off as austere, but I love it. A darker, blacker profile, brooding. (681 views)
Tasted by le fouloir on 5/16/2023 & rated 92 points: Still drinking beautifully. (430 views)
Tasted by andtheodor on 3/3/2022 & rated 90 points: Gummy, herbal, raw rosemary, Yerba Santa, raw meat, animal blood, iron, and a touch of raspberry. All things I really like in a wine, but the intensity was almost a little tiresome after a while? Your enjoyment may vary based on how much you like that funky, feral, garrigue style of CdP. (1173 views)
Tasted by Eric on 6/12/2021: ESTG pandemic breaker: This wine is immortal, as classic an example of Châteauneuf-du-Pape as you can imagine. Absolutely love it! (2373 views)
Tasted by SoundinBetween on 4/8/2020 flawed bottle: Very sadly, corked. Underlying wine was clearly very good too :( (2177 views)
Tasted by Rob MacKay on 9/3/2018 flawed bottle: something off here. perhaps a bit of cork taint. hard to tell but certainly wasn't good (2702 views)
Tasted by SimonG on 2/17/2018 & rated 92 points: Dinner@BA: Blind. far fuller and more vibrant than I would have expected for a 94. Quite dark fruited, feels more of a blend than the 01 Celestins alongside. Classic garriguey Chateauneuf. Does what it says on the label, and does it well. **** (3171 views)
Tasted by Philippe_C on 1/21/2018 & rated 94 points: The Pégau Réserve 1994 requires about 2 hours of aeration (no decating) to show a beautiful nose of ripe strawberries, sandalwood, bacon, épices provencales, sweet leather... Delicious silky tannin, sweet orange sanguine, leather, strawberries... lenght of 20 seconds, beatiful mature Chateauneuf! (2895 views)
Tasted by DoubleMagnum on 2/4/2017 & rated 93 points: This is definitely in better shape than my last bottle. The cork came out intact without any signs of seepage. Well balanced CdP. Everything has matured at the same rate and it is drinking wonderfully. Notes of dark fruits, garrigue and herbs du Provence. Great match to some Nicoise olives we had. (3629 views)
Tasted by jreynolds3 on 1/21/2017 & rated 92 points: Still had some good life to it. A very solid, well-aged CdP. Classic CdP that isn't overpowering, but the traditional well-balanced Pegau approach. Cork was in terrific shape thankfully. (3594 views)
Tasted by MrMoose on 7/26/2016 & rated 90 points: a bit tired , but still lush and elegant, showing all of its typical character- earth and black fruits abounding! (3384 views)
Tasted by BVal on 3/20/2016 & rated 93 points: Color: moderately deep ruby core -> full garnet rim. Delicious, savoury bouquet of dried thyme/marjoram/Provencal herbs, leather, cherries and game meat. Palate is still going strong with plenty of fruit, a full bodied presence and great length on the finish. Great tertiary development and lovely to drink. I would have to say this is absolutely at peak and should be enjoyed by those having any left as I don't think this will get any better (though I can see it lasting a few more years before the slide). My last bottle and at 22 years old holding on quite well. (3458 views)
Tasted by DoubleMagnum on 2/13/2016 & rated 91 points: Mold on top of the cork. Beautifully mature. Light but potent. Feels like aged Burgundy. Strong mineral finish. Lovely aged wine. (3522 views)
Tasted by becassine on 1/14/2016 & rated 88 points: Seen to have aged a little bit to much (2521 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 1/9/2016 flawed bottle: Corked unfortunately (2586 views)
Tasted by Rick 4 Wine on 10/4/2014 & rated 95 points: Drinking beautifully here with excellent fruit and lots of forest floor. The fruit needs about thirty minutes to develop (we did not decant) and some funk blew off after 10-15 minutes. Long, 45 second finish. Beautiful!! (3115 views)
Tasted by shormi on 9/27/2014 & rated 93 points: HInts of Raspberry, tobacco, leather, and rose. Deep garnet color (2598 views)
Tasted by SoundinBetween on 3/3/2014 & rated 94 points: From a well-preserved bottle. From everything I've read, this bottle screams classic Pegau. Very deep nose of crushed fresh red raspberries and thyme. Well-balanced acidity with not much tannin remaining. Very funky herbal finish that's persistent but not overly so. With a proper food pairing, this wine is transcendent. Without, merely very good. (3366 views)
Tasted by le fouloir on 11/10/2013 & rated 90 points: This Pegau was good, but not of the stature of other Pegaus I've drunk from other vintages. I'm used to an inky, viscous, rich full-bodied CdP. The '94 was light to medium bodied, well-integrated tannins, and quite feminine for a CdP. Don't get me wrong, this bottle was quite tasty, but was more like a pinot noir-based wine, than the typical CdP grapes. Quite a different Pegau than I've experienced in the past. (3509 views)
Tasted by dsamuel on 7/24/2013 & rated 90 points: Dark crimson with browning edges as expected. Aromas of dirt and game, with black cherry undertones. Well integrated tannins and fruit. Probably time to drink up as this has probably hit its peak. (3740 views)
Tasted by Rick 4 Wine on 4/14/2013 & rated 94 points: A mature wine with good structure and lingering fruit. Will age a bit more but not improve. Some tar but not as deep or heavy as I recall. Need to drink up. (3299 views)
Tasted by french16 on 3/17/2013: Another great showing for this '94. Powerful and very aromatic nose. Barnyard notes with black olives, meat, herbs and stewed fruit. Surprising minty notes. Palate is well balanced, med to full body with no heaviness despite that ripe stewed fruit. Licorice. Long finish. Very nice Pegau. (3344 views)
Tasted by Rick 4 Wine on 1/22/2013 & rated 95 points: - Garnet color. It's in total harmony with a medium body. Smooth texture with a medium finish - Drinking beautifully now. We decanted for thirty minutes and then rebottled and took to dinner, French Provincial during venison season! It was perfect. The minerality stood up against the game. Tannins are softer and fully developed now with depth of flavor. Aging will not benefit the wine. Drink now. (2972 views)
Tasted by CCWhino on 9/9/2011 & rated 93 points: Decanted for for 20min. Watched timberlake/beyonce video. Pepper and earth on the nose. Tastes changed as the wine opened up, alcohol at first with pepper, changing to licorice and apricot as the alcohol faded. Very nice. 30 min later cherry on the nose. Taste of blackberry. Complex and time layered (4486 views)
Tasted by jmoore431 on 2/26/2011 & rated 94 points: On opening: deep crimson color; reticent nose of bacon fat, deep sweet cherry fruit and pie spices. Tannins seem well-integrated until you hit the mouth puckering finish. More than a little closed in on itself.

After an hour: Almost impenetrable, reminds me of opening a great Mouton way too early (though this killing of pre-born wine was at a fraction of that kind of expense). depth of rich fruit clearly beneath; forest floor, almost burgundian rich flavors on steroids; rich cocoa finish.

At 2-4 hours: Fruit still struggling to slowly emerge. Gave up. Had been uncorked for hours, stoppered it up with no treatment, suction or other gimick

Next day: WOW!!! Now really open and spectacular. Did not write down the wonderful details but this had opened up beautifully. Rick fruit, smooth yet structured. Incredible length, great with a piece of well seasoned beef. (4729 views)

Domaine du Pégau is a beloved icon of traditionalism in Châteauneuf du Pape, crafting wines that dually epitomize the Châteauneuf style of the Southern Rhône while being unmistakably Pégau. Long owned by the Féraud family, the estate is run by the charming Laurence, a Parker Wine Advocate Wine Personality of the Year who was exceptionally well-schooled by her father Paul. Despite receiving six 100-point scores in less than 10 years, Domaine du Pégau is a down to earth specimen of Southern France hospitality.

Pégau produces three high-end Châteauneuf-du-Pape cuvées: the traditional Cuvée Reservée, the special Cuvée Laurence, and the incredible Cuvée da Capo (made from the best grapes in only the best years). These wines are aged in large old oak foudres for at least 18 months in the case of the Reservée, and much longer for Laurence and Capo.

Robert Parker of The Wine Advocate summarizes the house style as follows: “This superb estate fashions an old style, massive, unbelievably rich, rustic Châteauneuf du Pape. If you want to taste what the old style Châteauneuf du Pape of the forties, fifties, and early sixties tasted like, buy a bottle of Domaine du Pégau. They are rich, rustic, sometimes massive Châteauneuf du Papes made with no concession to modern-day tastes.” Furthermore, he continues “I have long been a huge fan of this estate, and have put my money where my mouth is, having purchased all of Pégau’s vintages since 1979.” Heady praise indeed from the world’s leading wine critic.

Domaine du Pégau’s wine have developed a cult-like following among savvy consumers, who adore their expressive style, unique personality and still-affordable prices for the quality and experience they deliver.

“There is a secret in the knowledge transmitted over generations.” — Laurence Féraud

Domaine du Pegau is run by Laurence Feraud and her father Paul.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
