Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92.5 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 93 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by MuddyBear on 1/11/2024 & rated 93 points: From the coravin. Typically expressive pegau nose of spice and red fruit. Young and a bit tight on the palate. raspberries and strawberries with some woody notes. Good balance. Still a tannic beast with a touch of alcoholic heat. I love it but Pegau is always in my wheelhouse. I think this vintage may need a bit more time. This was my first of nine. It’s great but hold. (3499 views)
Tasted by sjmayotte on 1/1/2024 & rated 94 points: Drinking great after 1hr decant (3301 views)
Tasted by Arch57 on 11/23/2023 & rated 92 points: Thanksgiving day wine at our daughter’s house. A touch more tannic than the 2017 we also drank. (3516 views)
Tasted by wineton.mee on 9/9/2023 & rated 92 points: Touch of Brett, rustic. Against the amarone, this is less in your face, maybe even somewhat closed. but the ripeness of the red fruits comes through. Fruit cake. Cocoa. Seamless tannins though, maybe mostly because of the pairing with food. (4674 views)
Tasted by cubswinws on 8/8/2023 & rated 92 points: Continues to drink quite well. (4733 views)
Tasted by jmckeeIII on 7/19/2023 & rated 93 points: Very smooth opened up and will get better over time (4499 views)
Tasted by Crunge on 6/23/2023 & rated 92 points: PnP at cellar temp. Typical Pegau funk backed up by plum and cherry. Dirt, hay, and slate on the finish. Definitely a Pegau and a good choice if you like earthy wines. (4410 views)
Tasted by Rywyine on 5/26/2023: This was quite elegant for a CDP. A bit of Brett was present but I still enjoyed. Red and blue fruited. Still young. Well balanced with the EtOH (4338 views)
Tasted by Vercellotti on 4/13/2023 & rated 93 points: Awesome nose and flavour on opening.
Changed for the better over an hour.

Soft tannins, blue berry, little vanilla, and then candy floss. Such a delicious long after taste.

Should age for another few years. (4575 views)
Tasted by mimik on 2/16/2023 & rated 93 points: Still young but this its elegance does a very good job hiding its 14.5% alcohol like crazy. Not Bretty or funky. Very smooth and pure. Wait 5 years and it will be quite something. Even in off years Laurence performs wonders (4832 views)
Tasted by WAWINEFAN on 2/13/2023 & rated 90 points: Popped and pored and then decanted and drank over an hour. A little funk on the pallet to begin with but overall a nice wine. Still young. (4463 views)
Tasted by DevenStephens on 2/12/2023 & rated 93 points: Very interesting! Expected more of a fruit bomb but this one is a lot more on the herbal spicy side. Spices, herbs, juniper berries, cedar and after a long decant the fruits were more showing with Raspberry and red cherries. Great CNdP! (4222 views)
Tasted by ragavolley on 2/11/2023 & rated 93 points: Toujours mon préféré (3889 views)
Tasted by melvinyeowq on 1/6/2023: French but no BBC: Wow I thought this was a northern Rhone with the blue fruit and white pepper on the nose. Surprisingly clean so even when it was revealed as a CDP my mind didn't go to Pegau. Still quite tight and reserved, got a little jammy with air - probably needs more time to settle down. Quite international in style though so I am not sure if it will ever develop into something as interesting as Pegaus from yesteryear. (5024 views)
Tasted by Achermann on 12/27/2022 & rated 91 points: Christmas dinner. Blackcurrant, varmth, garrique, eucalyptus, a little barnyard. Quite long finish.

Hold. (4139 views)
Tasted by MichaelY on 11/27/2022 & rated 95 points: Opens up beautifully in 30 mintes, pair well with lamb. Stock up. (4497 views)
Tasted by swon919 on 11/13/2022 & rated 96 points: 잔에서 50분후에 굉장히 엘레강스하고
밸런스 잡힌 팔렛이 올라옴
복합미도 훌륭하고 아주 맘에드는 와인 (4308 views)
Tasted by Whitman on 10/11/2022 & rated 92 points: Immediately nice warm inviting nose with Provance herbs, also eucalyptus. Later there's more underbrush.
It develops quite a lot during the first hours and the tannins is not that obvious, like in the beginning. A medium palate with ripe fruit like black berries and even cherries.. A nice finish also with sweet fruit.
For my palate its mature, but not as great as 8 months ago. Guess i prefer Pégau on the wild side, but its tasty and nice. (4946 views)
Tasted by Winedog1 on 10/8/2022 & rated 94 points: Drinking really well right now. (4421 views)
Tasted by rjm on 10/3/2022: Very strong tulip nose - classic CDP but a bit thin. (4486 views)
(4616 views)
Tasted by adamanko on 9/16/2022 & rated 93 points: This is gorgeous now. With my spanish Chistorras it matches perfectly. Much more polished than expected. Well balanced. 93.

Edit: Agree that this is probably not for long term cellaring. But what do I know? (4165 views)
Tasted by honest bob on 9/14/2022 & rated 91 points: French road trip, mainly Rhône valley; 9/4/2022-9/18/2022: From open 75cl at Domaine Pegau tasting room, Châteauneuf du Pape. Cassis, dark ripe raspberry, garrigue and eucalyptus scent, all well in balance, and not aggressively spicy; surprisingly juicy medium-bodied entry leads with blackcurrants, other soft fruit and lively acidity; fruit still primary on the mid-palate, but the tannins are supple, and the wine is therefore (just about) approachable already; long finish. This probably won’t turn out such a clear long-term prospect as the 2017 and the 2019 obviously are, but unlike those tougher vintages it should provide real pleasure in early maturity (from about 2024/25?) Fine wine, fairly priced at 40 EUR cellar door. 90-91P (4386 views)
Tasted by Renzloh on 9/11/2022 & rated 92 points: Brett and lots of cherries. Decanted for 1 hour before drinking. Powerful but still a little rough. Needs to sit for a while. (4012 views)
Tasted by matage on 9/4/2022 & rated 92 points: Black cherries, leather, herbs and a touch of bramberry. Not as much brett as anticipated. Firm leathery sandalwood tannins and a long finish.
Preferred it on day one when it was a bit more rough and demanding compared to the fairly smooth showing day 2 but YMMV.
Ready to drink for my palate but then again - I have realized that I like my Pegaus on the young side.

Domaine du Pégau is a beloved icon of traditionalism in Châteauneuf du Pape, crafting wines that dually epitomize the Châteauneuf style of the Southern Rhône while being unmistakably Pégau. Long owned by the Féraud family, the estate is run by the charming Laurence, a Parker Wine Advocate Wine Personality of the Year who was exceptionally well-schooled by her father Paul. Despite receiving six 100-point scores in less than 10 years, Domaine du Pégau is a down to earth specimen of Southern France hospitality.

Pégau produces three high-end Châteauneuf-du-Pape cuvées: the traditional Cuvée Reservée, the special Cuvée Laurence, and the incredible Cuvée da Capo (made from the best grapes in only the best years). These wines are aged in large old oak foudres for at least 18 months in the case of the Reservée, and much longer for Laurence and Capo.

Robert Parker of The Wine Advocate summarizes the house style as follows: “This superb estate fashions an old style, massive, unbelievably rich, rustic Châteauneuf du Pape. If you want to taste what the old style Châteauneuf du Pape of the forties, fifties, and early sixties tasted like, buy a bottle of Domaine du Pégau. They are rich, rustic, sometimes massive Châteauneuf du Papes made with no concession to modern-day tastes.” Furthermore, he continues “I have long been a huge fan of this estate, and have put my money where my mouth is, having purchased all of Pégau’s vintages since 1979.” Heady praise indeed from the world’s leading wine critic.

Domaine du Pégau’s wine have developed a cult-like following among savvy consumers, who adore their expressive style, unique personality and still-affordable prices for the quality and experience they deliver.

“There is a secret in the knowledge transmitted over generations.” — Laurence Féraud

Domaine du Pegau is run by Laurence Feraud and her father Paul.

2018 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée

“80% Grenache, 6% Syrah, 4% Mourvèdre, & 10% other authorized varietals (Counoise, Cinsault, Vaccarèse, Terret noir, Picardan, Muscardin, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, etc) from 48+ acres of vines located in the communes of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Courthézon (La Crau), and Bédarrides (Cabanes de Saint Jean & Les Escondudes), & which ave 60+ yrs of age with yields 2 tons/acre;

“Whole grape bunches are lightly crushed and fermented with wild yeasts for 5-7 days in traditional cement vats. This is followed by a further maceration period of 7-14 days, with1-2 pump-overs per day. The press & free run juice are then aged in 5,000 liter oak foudres for 24 months before being blended & bottled without filtration.”

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
