Community Tasting Notes (average 89.3 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 29 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Joelene on 1/26/2023 & rated 92 points: Still a big wine and still drinking well. Blueberry and bubble gum fruit. Some tar and burnt pie, black pepper and vanilla. Some alcohol noticeable but not distracting. Low acidity but still pleasant, nice silky mouthfeel. Lengthy finish. Tasty juice. (194 views)
Tasted by CP on 10/17/2008 & rated 92 points: Three years did some beautful things for this. Open for an hour, not decanted. Beautiful purple color, mostly clear, medium body. Fruity, bacony aroma, ultrasmooth texture, coffee balances well with bacon and raspberry notes, little acid, little pepper. Smooth fruity finish. Drinks so well right now, wish I had more. (2340 views)
Tasted by RWilkinson on 10/31/2007: Nice balance and structure, mouth coating favors and not overwhelming. (2551 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 5/30/2007 & rated 91 points: Really came together since the last tasting! Rich black berry and cola with wonderful pepper and mocha flavors. Well integrated tannins with pleasant finish. (2653 views)
Tasted by cmr on 5/18/2007 & rated 90 points: Very Nice balance and structure. Mouth coating but not overwhelming. Rich black fruits on the palate. This bottle had a what seems to be typical slight funk on the nose that many Novy wines have had for me. (2701 views)
Tasted by shaneajohnson on 3/30/2007 & rated 92 points: Decanted 1.5 hours and then had with dinner of Wagyu steak. Pretty wonderful stuff. Not to much going on on the nose--faint eucalyptus-- but wonderful dark fruit and chocolate on the palate. Alcohol was noticeable, but did not detract very much from the overall balance. Sorry I had only one bottle. (2851 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 3/26/2007 & rated 84 points: Garys' Vineyard Syrah - Novy & Testarossa Blindtasted (Rich and Peggy's Home in Los Altos, CA): Group's #4 (my #8) – 55 pts; 2, 2, 0, 1 – ripe berry with savory marjoram note on nose; big, hot, almost searing jammy black fruit and fig; medium finish (1842 views)
Tasted by RussW on 12/8/2006: Big wine that was a bit unbalanced on day 1 with some heat on the finish. Better on day 2 with more balance, mouth-coating dark fruit, some mocha notes and telltale Rosella's citrus acidity but not as strong as a SV bottling. I would give this another year at least to allow the big upfront fruit to integrate. (1711 views)
Tasted by pitt71 on 8/20/2006 & rated 88 points: Decanted for 3 hours, enjoyed from reidel stems, black pepper with dark fuit and hints of mocha, integrated with nice structure (1956 views)
Tasted by MLwine on 6/23/2006 & rated 86 points: Very brash in all respects. Fruit forward. Unfortunately, the alcohol (15.5%) overwhelmed everything else. Very hot. Could be too young. Maybe it will gain balance in a few years? Or maybe it just isn't right for my palate. (1941 views)
Tasted by cmr on 6/9/2006 & rated 90 points: Very Nice balance and structure. Mouth coating but not overwhelming. Rich black fruits on the palate. (2059 views)
Tasted by Elkiholic on 5/14/2006 & rated 89 points: Fun wine with lots going on. 1st time with a syrah, so I was a bit thrown off at first. I liked the deep flavors and richness of the fruit. Nice mix of leather and blackberry with a touch of smoke or tobacco thrown in for variety. (2127 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 5/13/2006 & rated 90 points: Rich fruit forward black berry and cola with hint of mocha and tobacco. Very enjoyable Syrah. (2086 views)
Tasted by fhmesq on 4/25/2006 & rated 91 points: Very nice bottle. We tasted this at the winery, really liked it and bought a couple of bottles. Has gotten better since. Nose was all dark fruit and very pleasant. Well integrated and very typical syrah, with some nice mocha or chocolate flavors and a longer finish. (2257 views)
Tasted by mreinitz on 3/5/2006 & rated 91 points: Three of us shared a bottle and we all were pleased. The flavors are well integrated and the wine seems to be at its peak. Inky and tasty. (2356 views)
Tasted by GreenDrazi on 1/26/2006 & rated 90 points: Consistent with previous notes, but this has integrated better with a more consistent palate and a touch more of mocha in the background. (2457 views)
Tasted by Rick D on 1/23/2006: Opaque purple/red. Nose of overwelming vanilla, black fruit, sulfur and slight heat. The wine in the mouth was like chewing on a piece of oak with a hint of vanilla'd black fruit.

Tasted the next day: oak mellowed/integrated into a coffee taste and a funk (dirty feet smell).

I can't rate this wine on one bottle as this is either seriously flawed or just bad wine. ?? (2497 views)
Tasted by thomaskeil on 11/29/2005 & rated 90 points: Somehow this wine hits my palate's G-spot for no obvious reason. It is one of the darkest wines I've opened of late. The nose is all about dark fruit, spice and vanilla/mocha (oak in a nice way). On the palate this wine amplifies every aroma and is very thick and juicy. No layers of complexity or huge structure, just balanced juicyness and spice that somehow translates into something fun to drink. (2548 views)
Tasted by GreenDrazi on 10/15/2005 & rated 90 points: Decanted 2hrs. Floral nose of white pepper and dark fruit. Sweet and slightly glycerol blueberry flavors fleshed out with white pepper and just a touch of smoke and spice. The flavors tended to elevate on the finish. Has a light frame which alternates between being thin along with some occasional depth. The depth seemed to increase the longer it was decanted and was a much fuller, round palate after 3 ˝ hrs. (2634 views)
Tasted by mdstenner on 3/26/2005 & rated 89 points: Always a very solid Syrah I can see this improving for a year or three. Again, I think the oak needs time to integrate and calm down but I see good things ahead for this wine. Good structure, nice balance, carried the alcohol well. 89 points with room to improve. Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
