Community Tasting Notes (average 89.9 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 44 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Labrador on 11/25/2021 & rated 85 points: A nice Riesling that was enjoyed over Thanksgiving dinner. (1032 views)
Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 10/4/2019 & rated 90 points: Brilliant deep yellow gold. Low intensity nose of citrus and stone fruit with a light herbal note. The palate is not very concentrated; instead, age has muted the body but not in a bad way - a lot of weight, but somehow delicate. Dried orange, a bit of apricot pit bitterness, and a salty, stony mineral acidity. The acidity is piercing, and makes this so refreshing and gulpable. This is moving beyond its prime, clearly, but is still so delicious. Sadly, open to done was less than two hours, so I didn’t have a good sense of how this wine might develop with some air. (1949 views)
Tasted by isaacjamesbaker on 6/25/2019 & rated 90 points: Birthday bash tasting (Convivial - Washington, DC): A bit tired, but still nice, showing a lot of attractive aged characteristics. Crisp yet lush with apricot and spiced tea notes. I get this distinct pine sap note that is pretty cool. (2162 views)
Tasted by Seafoam Manor on 3/24/2016 & rated 93 points: This might be a bit on the downhill slide, but it is still a beautiful example of an aged white wine. Surprisingly, the nose was a bit subdued and I was expecting a petrol bomb. On the palate there is an overriding sense of smokiness, which adds a depth, rather than being overpowering. There seems to be a foundation of almost cider like apples, with dried oranges, tangerines, limes, salty meyer lemon and a slight mint note all covered in a patina of 24 years of age. The acidity is fading, but the finish, while not powerful at all, has a lingering, haunting, quality to it. If you appreciate the uniqueness of aged wines, this has it in spades. (4545 views)
Tasted by sawira on 4/12/2015 & rated 92 points: Exactly, and I mean exactly, the same as my 6/20/12 note. This hasn't budged, is fat at first, then sleekens to a shimmering example of aged Riesling. This has another decade ahead of it, at least. I'm thankful for CT, in that I could easily see that note, open and aerate the bottle significantly ahead of serving, which helped its performance significantly. I strongly recommend a six hour slow ox, and every couple hours significantly shaking, to aerate the bottle. Was brilliant, and still unfolding after open an hour in glass. 92pts, 94pts personal preference. (5216 views)
Tasted by mattyboy_ on 8/23/2013 & rated 92 points: Mixed German and Alsatian vertical tasting (Chez Eric): A treat to drink. Color is still very youthful - The freshest out of the lineup - lots of citrus, lime leaf, lemongrass, petrol, peach. Slate and mineral on the palate with good acidity. well balanced. finishes clean. (6443 views)
Tasted by salil on 7/20/2013 & rated 92 points: (Mostly) Rieslings at Lan Sheng (Lan Sheng, NYC): Very pretty; fresh lime, citrus and green apple fruit framed by a patina of more mature smoky and creamy elements, and a gentle mineral undercurrent beneath. There's really bright acidity here that keeps it very refreshing and precise, and the balance here is fantastic. Lovely. (6388 views)
Tasted by sawira on 6/20/2012 & rated 92 points: Library release. First night: Bright gold and green hued yellow. Wow! Boistrous nose of baking spices, underripe citrus and a strong peach pit/botrytis component. Soft attack with a dry, almost trocken-like mid and especially end palate. Waxy, almost Semillon-like in texture and even flavor aspects. A bit dilute in mouthfeel, almost hollow. Not the depth and structure I'd hoped. Lots of baking and brown spices on the palate as well. Intruiging. Talc emerging over time, along with a very strong baked ripe apple flavor profile, which I don't like.
Second night: Nose more knit, with spicy baked yellow fruit predominant. More acid on the attack, and brighter throughout. This is more of what I expected. Nice long mouthwatering slightly tart finish and packed with the beginnings of secondaries, while still holding delicious, primary, bergamot and slightly underripe white peach fruit. No sign of the botrytis elements or the spiced baked apples from last night.
This is part of why I like aged world-class Riesling - so everchanging and kaleidoscopically alive.
This bottle will last another decade, but I'd go for it now and get all these aspects as they unfold. Beautiful! 92 pts pure quality, 94 pts personal preference. (6762 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 1/10/2012: Apparently a library release. Delightful, mature Riesling with a palate of clear green fruit, lime, petrol and minerals. The wine is soft and round yet with excellent precision and cut. A treat. With Jason at Foreign & Domestic in Austin. (4758 views)
Tasted by zscheiner on 1/7/2012 & rated 89 points: 90's Dinner: Slow-oxed about an hour before serving. Unappealing balloon nose. A touch of sweet apple fruit on the palate, but minerality is predominant. Not much acidity left, texture is round and viscous. Didn't enjoy this quite as much as my last two bottles, following the Henriot probably didn't do it any favors. (4731 views)
Tasted by Anthony Lombardi on 12/23/2011: Deep gold. Powerful, expressive nose showing key lime and granny smith. On the palate, this is youthful, fruity and fresh. Honeyed citrus fruit coats the mid palate with amazing focus and a precise acidic cut. Stone fruit emerges on the back of the palate and this wine just keeps delivering bright flavors. I love the texture on this wine and the finish brings the lime on the nose into a deeper focus. I liked the 1991 from earlier this year just a shade better, but this is excellent as well. (3227 views)
Tasted by baroloboy55 on 10/30/2011 & rated 92 points: Another very fine showing. Acid still bright, subtle petrol notes, on the palate, green apple, pear and perhaps an inflection of meyer lemon and/or key lime. The wine seems to be in a very fine place and will stay there for quite some time. VERY happen to have fallen into a few more bottles recently. (3513 views)
Tasted by salil on 9/27/2011 & rated 91 points: A much better showing than a bottle I had earlier this year. There's a faint mustiness initially that had a few worried about TCA, but it blows off quickly to show bright pear and green apple fruit over a steely mineral base augmented by maturing petrol, smoky and creamy notes. There's still plenty of cut and precision here, wonderful balance and the stuffing and structure to age for a while longer. (2876 views)
Tasted by cartime on 7/23/2011 & rated 91 points: Nicely aged with tons of petrol on the nose along with fennel fronds, almond, lime and white fruits. Lovely palate still showing some acidity, and a bit of sweetness. (2840 views)
Tasted by zscheiner on 6/10/2011 & rated 90 points: This bottle started off quite musty on the nose but that blew off after about a half-hour. It opened up really nicely to reveal soft ripe lemon and honeydew, subtle spice and minerality and just enough acidity. This wine is delicate and pretty and I love it. I'd recommend opening in advance of serving. (3103 views)
Tasted by AWei on 5/13/2011 & rated 89 points: Nose of petrol and honey. Nice experience with a riesling that had some age on it. (3409 views)
Tasted by ews3 on 5/12/2011 & rated 93 points: a beautiful bottle. nice sencondary notes. quince and lemon squares. (2805 views)
Tasted by jkline on 5/11/2011 & rated 91 points: tasty, honeyed nose, apples, pear, petrol with a crisp finish....drank it too fast. getting better with air. 8% alcohol (3212 views)
Tasted by xtrmjoe on 4/3/2011 & rated 90 points: My system (nose mouth finish) +//, big powerful nose of flowers and oil, bracing acidity (3226 views)
Tasted by salil on 3/28/2011 & rated 88 points: A little musty on the nose at first (I wondered if it was corked initially), but clears up with some air to show bright white fruited flavours and developed petrol and smoky notes. Mature, nicely balanced, though not showing the mineral character I'd like in a Saar wine. Moderate sweetness matched by nice acids, very nice. (3326 views)
Tasted by xwine on 3/5/2011: Remarkably light color for a nearly 19-year old wine (or even for a young wine). Big hit of petrol on opening, then also some candied dried fruit (think candied orange slices). Somewhat shy on the acidity, and seems a bit unfocused; white fruit with a lemony finish. I'm not as wild about this wine as some others seem to be, which is not to say it isn't pretty good -- especially for the $32 I paid. Certainly worth the price of admission. (3387 views)
Tasted by bambam on 2/27/2011 & rated 88 points: Picked this up at K&L. Good Rieslings age so gracefully. Pale yellow in the glass. Soft lemon, lime and apples with a petrol and acidic finish. The cork was quite moldy on the top but with a little clean up it was fine. (3440 views)
Tasted by Itsdarrow on 2/16/2011 & rated 98 points: Bright, light honey, hints of pertol (3643 views)
Tasted by zscheiner on 11/11/2010 & rated 91 points: Light yellow. Petrol and baked apple nose. Light-bodied and round on the midpalate. Sweet apples and minerals, with lemony acidity coming through on the backend and finish. Really tasty, paired perfectly with a Dungeness crab salad. Library release and a great value. (3923 views)
Tasted by Arinbraghe on 10/27/2010 & rated 91 points: Yowza. Earlier reports by someone (who may have been me) that this is approaching its sell-by date were gross exaggerations. This is perhaps the freshest bottle of this '92 Spatlese that I've yet had, with more bright fruit and less of that mouldering stone qualilty I've found in some earlier bottles. Opens with super-pretty notes of lemon and lime (note to the Coca Cola Company: if Sprite were even 1/20th this delicious and complex, I'd be putty - putty! - in your hands), then fleshes out to this outrageous shredded coconut component. Then for a final trick the coconut was replaced in the last glass by a powerful display of freshly cut ginger. What was remarkable about this wine was the way the disparate dominant flavors came in successive waves, resulting in a series of very different profiles. This puppy has miles to go before it sleeps. #2014 Vintage Notes:
2014 Vintage Report by Terry Theise
2014 Vintage Report by Wine Spectator
"My gut still tells me the Saar (and to some extent) the Ruwer are better overall in 2014 than the more storied areas of the Mosel proper, but those that spent the requisite time living in their middle-Mosel vineyards made some of the most electric and "feathery" Riesling in a long time (maybe the finest in 20 years - yes, it's true!)" - Jon Rimmerman (Of course only a very short historical memory would call the Saar and Ruwer less 'storied' than the middle Mosel - jht)

Mosel Saar Ruwer

Starting in 2007 the German wine authorities have changed labeling laws to rename all of the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer wines to just "Mosel." This puts this and other database driven sites in a difficult spot, as millions of old wine label reflect the former labeling. As described here, CellarTracker has elected to remain with the old labeling for a number of years to avoid confusion. At some point we will switch over to just "Mosel" but not for a few years at least.

#2018 Vintage Notes:
"Acid levels are relatively low throughout Riesling-growing Europe (acidification will once again be permitted in Germany – no surprise, as that’s been the case in eight of the last 10 vintages); but because malic acid was baked off or degraded by relentlessly balmy weather means, what acid remains is overwhelmingly of the efficacious tartaric sort. Extract levels are low, as one would anticipate from a growing season during which relatively little moisture was coursing through the vine’s roots and shoots. [...] Everyone is astonished how there could have been so much juice despite the drought." - David Schildknecht
"2018 is a homogenous vintage with a very high general level, below which it seldom falls [...] It leads with blossom. It is perhaps 80% delicious and 20% fascinating." - Terry Theise

#2017 Vintage Notes:
"not so friendly towards light wines" - Milkmansteve

#2016 Vintage Notes: "Overall, 2016 is a charmer of a vintage with much immediate ripe and fruity appeal, not unlike 2011 (in fresher) or 2007 (in lighter). However, 2016 is far from being homogeneous, in fact it is composed of a mosaic of vintages, a result of the freakish growing conditions. Hidden inside the vintage, there are true gems with the balance of 1997, one of the best vintages ever, 2002 or even 2008. The bulk of the harvest was brought in with refreshingly moderate sugar levels. Overall, the Saar and Ruwer produced slightly fresher wines than the Middle Mosel but there are great differences between Estates. The good harvest conditions allowed for some Auslese, little BA and even TBA wines, but some remarkably pure and fruity Eiswein.
In general, 2016 offers the opportunity to acquire Riesling with great immediate ripe appeal: The vintage is a true charmer. At the top, 2016 is one of the most exciting and elegantly balanced vintage since the 1990s and well-worth stocking up for cellaring! In particular, we urge our readers to literally plunge onto the finest Kabinett and Spätlese: These are some of the most exciting and classic we have ever tasted. 2016 looks also set to become a major vintage for dry Riesling, provided the aromatics are not overripe. Lovers of dessert wines will find much to love in 2016 as the Auslese are pure and the Eiswein are gorgeously fruity. They should however also keep an eye open for the remaining stunning noble-sweet wines from 2015 which are still available here and there." - Mosel Fines Wines, No. 36, July 2017

#2014 Vintage Notes:
"The heterogeneity of the 2014 vintage carries over onto the aging process. The top wines start to close down, as one would expect from these wines which are a remake of those from the 1990s. The wines affected by gin, saffron and mushroom flavors are still comparatively open and offer a not unattractive Scheurebe styled fruit opulence. We would opt to drink up these lesser wines except for the odd bottle and bury the little treasures of the vintage deep into the cellar." - Mosel Fines Wines, No. 30, March 2016

#2013 Vintage Notes:
"The fruity-styled 2013 wines have firmed up significantly since last year and start to show signs of closing down, making the underlying acidity seemingly sharp and out of balance. The better dry wines have come out of their early armor of smoke and tannin but the acidity may prove quite challenging. Quite frankly, except for some smaller bottlings, this is a vintage to lay down and wait." - Mosel Fines Wines, No. 27, March 2015

#2012 Vintage Notes:
"The 2012 wines have put on some flesh and go through a 'fattier' phase which is not unlike what the 2007 went through at the same period. However, the zestier acidity cuts through this 'weight' and makes the wines thoroughly enjoyable at this early stage. In particular the fruity Kabinett and Spatlese as well as the off-dry and dry wines offer much pleasure. We expect these wines to close down over the coming year or two. Enjoy while it lasts!" - Mosel Fines Wines, No. 27, March 2015

#2011 Vintage Notes:
"A bit to our surprise, the 2011 wines have shut down and go through a quite difficult and muted phase now. Their low acidity combined with their maturity makes them feel rich, opulent and often bulky, and thus not really enjoyable. We expect that these will need at least a decade to integrate their sweetness and gain in harmony. The only exception is the dry wines, whose low acidity makes for great food companionship." - Mosel Fines Wines, No. 27, March 2015

#2010 Vintage Notes:
"After a mellower period in 2012, many 2010 wines have firmed up and developed a stronger smoky side. However, most continue to shine through their fruit opulence, structure and deliciously zesty but ripe acidity. This suits in particular the off-dry bottlings, which have more charm than the legally dry wines. Will these wines close down? Actually, the softening acidity makes us wonder now but it also provides further evidence that these wines will turn out harmonious after all." - Mosel Fines Wines, No. 27, March 2015

#2009 Vintage Notes:
"Most 2009 wines have closed down, which accentuates their round and soft side forward. Many can still be quite enjoyable but the times of primary fruit with its attractive aromatic expression and a generous acidic kick are now over. Except for the dry wines, we would definitely recommend keeping your hands off any bottle in your cellar and possibly buying more wines from this vintage on the market as these are true gems in the making." - Mosel Fines Wines, No. 27, March 2015
