Tasted by HeritageWine on 4/26/2024 & rated 90 points: PnP. This wine is at the far end of its drinking window. Still red, not brown, with muted tannins. Very enjoyable with a great friend. Drink now don't wait. (30 views)
Tasted by Mdubnik on 8/25/2019 & rated 88 points: Blah. (1966 views)
Tasted by Bottledrainer on 4/29/2018: The window is closing on this bargain wine. The fruit has faded and the finish is truncated but still noteworthy considering the price. (2893 views)
Tasted by Bottledrainer on 12/9/2017 & rated 90 points: I purchased several of these at release and held a couple of bottles knowing it would fade over time. Tom my surprise this wine is still drinking well. The blueberry notes are a bit muted but overall this has been a fantastic buy at $21 a bottle. (3199 views)
Tasted by StellarCellar on 12/13/2015 & rated 89 points: Very easy drinking with subdued tannins and acidity, well balanced, deep dark fruit. (7053 views)
Tasted by yboissonneault on 6/30/2015 & rated 90 points: Very good Cab with melted tannins and perfect timing for drinking. Very good quality for the price. (7261 views)
Tasted by Vailman on 1/27/2015 & rated 90 points: Agree with prior notes. Subdued tannins and acidity, ripe black fruit, uncomplicated and very drinkable for a Tuesday night. It's not an ageable wine but will last a few more years. (6503 views)
Tasted by prism on 11/20/2014 & rated 89 points: Nearing the end of its run; nice black fruit, medium finish. (5967 views)
Tasted by MyWineTutor on 11/16/2014 & rated 88 points: Decided to pop the cork on this because a recent mailing from Justin said the '08 was "showing bouquet or aged quality." First taste, marginal. An hour after decant, better. 90 minutes later, very good but I thought I was drinking a nice Zinfandel. Dark color with nice fig flavors along with blackberry and plum on a lengthy finish. (5930 views)
Tasted by xuaeinw on 9/1/2014 & rated 90 points: Subdued tannins and acidity, well balanced, ripe fruit. Drinks very well now. Not sure if this can improve from here. (2632 views)
Tasted by MyWineTutor on 6/27/2014 & rated 87 points: Still too early to drink this one. A bit tannic and non-descript. Flavors are muted even after an hour + decanting. Hope this one opens up in a couple years. (2653 views)
Tasted by prism on 6/17/2014 & rated 89 points: Popped and poured through a Vinturi. Smooth, rich, plush, uncomplicated and delicious. (2174 views)
Tasted by mcease on 6/10/2014 & rated 92 points: One of my favorite Cabs. Great go-to wine. Delicious fruit on the nose and pallet. Red fruit - not as much caramel flavor like it typically has. (1969 views)
Tasted by Grenik on 12/14/2013 & rated 89 points: Fading a little from previous bottles. Intense red fruit, classic cab nose, and moderate finish. An excellent QPR. (3065 views)
Tasted by jdinkin1 on 12/9/2013 & rated 86 points: Lacks structure. (2599 views)
Tasted by TastesGoodToMe on 11/29/2013 & rated 87 points: It's been 2 years since I last visited. The wine is much more in balance. But just too much oak for my taste. (2597 views)
Tasted by jpleedy on 11/26/2013 & rated 90 points: Surprisingly, we've grown to enjoy this wine more than in 2010-2011. Didn't anticipate it would get any better, and came across some in the cellar. A very pretty old world profile now. Kind of wish I had more. (2382 views)
Tasted by Ecoenophile on 11/10/2013 & rated 89 points: Decanted. Initial nose had a tiny funk... but the flavor was nice and opened up more over time. A bit earthy and sour cherry flavors.. smoothed into a nice soft finish. Nice, but not outstanding. (2412 views)
Tasted by CieloVista on 8/16/2013 & rated 89 points: Balanced, smooth, red cherry cola and vanilla with smoky/oak finish. (2372 views)
Tasted by prism on 6/27/2013 & rated 91 points: Popped and poured. This really needs to breathe for an hour or so to blow off the oakey notes. Once it is does, it is luscious and characteristically Paso. Cedar, red currant, blackberry. Very nice, and at $21 a good QPR. (2746 views)
Tasted by Sauvyfan on 3/17/2013 & rated 86 points: Extracted red and blacks, pencil lead,as well as tons of oak. Black on the palate, too acidic. Long finish that is rather unpleasant. So different from last note, I'm thinking this could be an off bottle. (4099 views)
Tasted by moega on 2/12/2013 & rated 89 points: Enjoyed this bottle. Good go-to for the $20 range. Fell a little short of the bigger Napa cabs, but had decent color, fruity taste, and a medium finish. (4274 views)
Tasted by Itriolo on 1/10/2013: Classic Justin Cab flavors of smooth red fruits and vanilla (from the American oak). Great QPR, even from a restaurant wine list. (4567 views)
Tasted by Bottledrainer on 1/2/2013 & rated 90 points: A really good value that has become my go to simple Cab. Some ripe blueberries with a hint of cedar. Smooth finish. (3879 views)
Tasted by richsd on 12/31/2012 & rated 90 points: Always consistent. Good on opening but decanting for an hour is a good plan. Justin is one of my favorite vineyards for consistent wines at the various price points. Orphan was always great at a lower cost. I have opened about 4 bottles of this cab and it has been nice each time. (3532 views)

2008 Justin Vineyards & Winery Cabernet Sauvignon

Estate Notes

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
