Community Tasting Notes (average 87.7 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 65 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by khmark7 on 1/17/2021 & rated 87 points: Remarkably long lived. Still somewhat tannic....good with beef stew. (1356 views)
Tasted by 312 on 2/6/2017 & rated 88 points: Popped and poured at dinner at home. Dark garnet color. Faint nose of cherry and strawberry. Thin legs. Medium body. Not complex, even hollow flavors of dark cherry and blackberry. Astringent sour notes on finish.

Update 2 days later: This wine has benefitted from being aerated and decanted for a day. It is more complex on the tongue and its sour astringency on finish has disappeared. We're increasing our rating from 85 to 88. (2215 views)
Tasted by Adventr.us on 5/10/2016 & rated 89 points: Can't remember what the last bottle was like - but I sure enjoyed this one. Nice balance to the fruits and acidity, with soft tannins and light to medium body. At least to my palate. Interesting and tasty. I'd buy more at this price for sure. (3150 views)
Tasted by hsacks on 1/22/2016 & rated 89 points: Deep red color. Aromas of red cherries, licorice and spices. Ripe, medium-bodied fruit in the mouth with good depth and length and well-integrated tannins. Not very complex but delicious with grilled meats and an excellent value. (3220 views)
Tasted by David_T on 12/27/2015 & rated 87 points: Surprisingly mostly unchanged from my note from two years ago. The flavors match, the structural notes are more integrated though this time the finish is shorter. Drinking very well now but it's likely a few more years before this starts to drop off. (3283 views)
Tasted by PaulusLoZebra on 11/23/2015 & rated 88 points: My last bottle of a case. A full two points more than two years ago for the first bottle. As I thought, it improved with the years, and this last bottle was wonderful, with the finish being fuller and longer than when younger, and overall showing a lot of harmony and integration of flavors. Not a challenging wine, but a delicious one. (2681 views)
Tasted by wineandski on 9/20/2015 & rated 88 points: A real surprise, based on the price. Just shows, good wines from unknown regions can be great buys (2825 views)
Tasted by markcic on 6/2/2014 & rated 85 points: great QPR - dark in the glass, dark fruit on the nose, blueberry and leather on the palate with a decent finish. (2494 views)
Tasted by dke on 5/3/2014 & rated 87 points: Not bad, tannins are still a bit sharp. (2317 views)
Tasted by calmike on 12/20/2013: Blackberries followed by pencil shavings / graphite. Nice pucker at the end. (2915 views)
Tasted by Number51 on 11/7/2013 & rated 89 points: Sweet cranberries, strawberries, and white chalk find their balance with high toned acidity. This is fruity and tasty, coming across as an imaginary blend of Cru Beaujolais and unoaked Spanish Grenache. At $8~9, it is an amazing value. (2983 views)
Tasted by Adventr.us on 10/21/2013 & rated 88 points: Enjoyable. On first taste, a little soft on the backend, but well balanced and interesting on the front end. Maybe not a classic pairing, but didn't diminish with a grilled skirt steak or the tomato-heavy ratatouille we had for dinner. I'd definitely buy more at this price. (2929 views)
Tasted by Jason Rzutkiewicz on 10/13/2013 & rated 86 points: (14%) 100% Vranec - This one leans toward a new world style. Smooth with dark red fruits. Zinfandel like (on the food friendlier side of the spectrum) Decent but doesn’t deliver on interesting giving Vranec and Macedonia. Nice enough at $10.

Wine Geek Notes: An Eric Solomon Selection, Made by Philippe Cambie, from 30-60 year old vines (2575 views)
Tasted by urban_dk on 9/10/2013 & rated 90 points: So dark it almost stains the glass. Starts with strong blackcurrant flavor, settles into a meaty mid-palate and finishes with notes of spice and strawberry. Great first impression of Macedonian wine. (3836 views)
Tasted by Barrygloec on 9/2/2013 & rated 90 points: As good as I remember it. Good with and without food. I hope Empire Wine stiil has it. (3614 views)
Tasted by studleytrey on 8/13/2013 & rated 89 points: Man, the "dark/blood" comments are not kidding. It really does look like Dracula's glass over here, and this would be perfect for a Halloween or "True Blood" party. Nose of soil, eucalyptus (others mention herbs and medicinal, but this is that note I think we're all referring to), plum, and black cherry. There's a definite dustiness as well, and I echo the Rutherford Cab. comment. There was a hint of confectioned fruit on the pop, but thankfully this evolved. Medium bodied with bright acidity, medium+ finish, and plum and black cherry notes carrying through on the palate. Slightly chalky tannins. Paired well with spicy sriracha/orange marinated chicken, but generally robust red sauces and fare should work well. I was recommended a burger pairing with this, which I think would also work well.  Tasted by Eric Guido on 7/21/2013 & rated 88 points: The nose showed rich dark fruit, herbal tones, ginger cookie and a hint of barnyard funk. On the palate it was rich with a medium body, showing ripe red and blue fruits with an medicinal-herbal quality. The fruit coated the palate with a massive amount of dry extract, yet remained fresh throughout. (2665 views)
Tasted by Barrygloec on 6/24/2013 & rated 90 points: Shared a bottle with Joe and Matt for my birthday celebration. They seemed to enjoy it as much as I do. They were surprised when I told them it's only $7.95 at Empire wine. (3885 views)
Tasted by gbanks on 6/22/2013 & rated 89 points: Concur with Beerzebub. Very nice value. Blindfolded, I might pick this to be some kind of cotes de provence blend. (2247 views)
Tasted by Barrygloec on 6/17/2013 & rated 90 points: Very good wine. For $8.45 at Empire Wine it's a bargin. It reminds me of some of the Tuscan dry wines I like. (3851 views)
Tasted by Gene_Mo on 6/14/2013 & rated 87 points: A bit sweet for our tastes. Good summer red. Good QPR. (2460 views)
Tasted by garthbernstein on 6/2/2013: My favorite all time $10 wine (3488 views)
Tasted by Beerzebub on 5/17/2013: Popped and poured. The aroma is appetizing, with an attractive savory mineral earthiness, big blueberry, black pepper, and herbaceous brush. When first opened it flirts with pruniness and has a touch of heat, but these issues resolve themselves rapidly. On the palate, acidity makes everything come together. Ripe cherry, blueberry, brush, black pepper, and gravelly earth, completely dry, assertive but smooth tannins, and really nice acidity. On the big side for me when it comes down to brass tacks, but seems perfectly crafted given the raw material, which is not without its charms. I'm enjoying this. Nice wine, and a great value. (2273 views)
Tasted by David_T on 4/6/2013 & rated 87 points: Dark fruit and florals on the nose. The palate is jammy but not over the top with dark fruit, a bit of pepper/spice and earth. Medium tannins and a surprisingly long acidity-driven finish. Well worth a try for the price; overall I would say drink in the short term but this may surprise with age given the acidic structure. (2046 views)
Tasted by Grape_ape on 3/28/2013: incredibly dark wine, crimson / purple color, almost like blood. Nice dark fruit, slightly spicy. Interesting and a good value for the price. (1968 views)

Tikveš

Producer website

The Tikveš wine region is the primary wine-producing region in the country of the country of Macedonia, a mountainous country at the centre of the Balkan peninsula. The Tikveš Winery, based in the town of Kavadarci, was established about 120 years ago and is now owned by M6, a successful Macedonian investment group. It is the largest winery in Macedonia (and quite possibly in the whole of south-east Europe). They own around 500 hectares of vines and have control over a further 3,500 hectares, producing over 20 million bottles per year. The winery – naturally state of the art – currently has a capacity of 25 million litres in fermentation tanks, a 1500m˛ barrel store containing 400 oak barriques and 180 foudres, and a futher 2000m˛ is given over to bottle ageing.
Tikveš Winery produces wine primarily in four ranges: Classic, Special Selection, Limited Edition and Alexandria Cuvée.
