Community Tasting Notes (average 86.8 pts. and median of 87 pts. in 14 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Motz on 3/21/2013 & rated 89 points: Interesting, it put my mind to Italian Piedirosso. It's a bit all over the place, but that's what makes it interesting. It features barnyard, wet haystack, and unique minerality on the nose and palate. Acid and tannins are good and the finish is medium. Good concentration and not as edgy as other Bierzo offerings. Other than an ugly label, it's a good bottle of wine. Maybe 90. (2333 views)
Tasted by lumpyelbow on 1/15/2013: Last bottle from a purchase of two. Decanted 40 minutes. Today we have an aromatic wine with quite a bit of interest. Fruit at the core surrounded by mineral and milled green peppercorns. Huge drying tannins make this impossible to drink solo. Pizza being delivered - see if that helps. Lively attack from the mid-palate through the finish. Super long almost abrasive in closing. Ground pepper sensation permeates to nose upon swallowing. Interesting to say the least. (2392 views)
Tasted by CarlosFigueiredo on 11/13/2012 & rated 89 points: 89 - Belo custo benefício por 70. Pode comprar. (2595 views)
Tasted by lumpyelbow on 7/11/2012: Not a repeater. (2737 views)
Tasted by Greg_O on 1/13/2012 & rated 90 points: floral and mineral notes on nose and palate. palate is fresh and lively with med+ acidity. solid mencia showing a good balance of freshness and concentration as well as varietally correct profile. (3297 views)
Tasted by Katznery on 6/18/2011 & rated 79 points: Olho: Límpido, rubi intenso.
(1896 views)
Tasted by bernardo on 2/19/2011 & rated 89 points: Great balance, fresh, flavourful. Love the acidity, could've been drank in two years more. (2070 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 1/24/2011: This one sees oak and is planted on all oak. I hate the label. From 50 year old vines.

Color is darker than the tinto mencia, medium + ruby, clear.

Nose is medium + with fruit, floral (green) and also some brett notes. So in that sense unclean.

Palate has a medium + body, medium + tannin, medium acidity and medium body intensity. Overall not as harmonious to me as the tinto mencia from the same producer. Finish is a bit "bulkier", a touch hot.

Overall my preference is for the "baby" of the range. The pick up here in oak and concentration doesn't neccessairly lead me to conclude that it is the better wine. Still very well made for $20. (2002 views)

Bodegas Peique

producer website

After many years of growing grapes and making small lots of wine, Luis Peique and his family established Bodegas Peique in 1999. The winery was built in 2000 and one of the sons, Jorge, who makes wine in Ribera del Duero, took over as winemaker. Jorge got his degree from the famous “Escuela de Viticultura y Enología de Requena” in 1994 and worked for Bodegas Protos (Ribera del Duero) from 1996 to 1998. With just a few vintages under his belt as the winemaker at Peique, the wines have been ranked among the best from Bierzo and are considered some of the most exciting wines made in Spain today. Bodegas Peique is located on the western border of Castilla Y Leon. The vineyards are in the town Valtuille de Abajo. Bierzo has a cool climate with Mediterranean and Atlantic influences. The climate falls between the mild, temperate style of Galicia and the hot, continental uplands of the Duero, with sufficient rainfall and top summer temperature of not much more than 32˚C (90˚F). As a result, the wines have a good balance of fruit and acid. All harvesting is done by hand. There is minimal intervention in the vineyards.

Mencía

Mencia is grown in the Northwestern region of Spain near the borders of Galicia, Leon, and Zamora. Mencia produces fruity wines of great color, acidity and aging potential. It is sweet and aromatic, with a good dose of alcohol. The vines produce medium-sized clusters and fruit.

The reds made from Mencia have a characteristic velvety palate. Traditional reds are pale, fragrant and light wines. Modern winemakers are creating bolder reds, of higher concentration, expressing Mencia’s aromas and freshness. Many wineries are taking advantage of the variety ability to aging.

Rose wines are aromatic and fruity, lively, light and soft.

Spain

Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia
Wine Map on weinlagen-info

Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous [sic] Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net

Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos (when sweetened). But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.

Bierzo

[[D.O.]] Bierzo is located on the western edge of the province of [[León]], next to the [[Galicia|Galician]] border. The region has a distinct microclimate, being at relatively low altitude and protected on both sides by mountains, marking a transition between the arid [[meseta]] and verdant Galicia.

The Santiago de Compostela pilgrim route passes directly through the region and the predominant red grape, [[Mencía]], was allegedly introduced by pilgrims. Mencía makes up 70% of planting and many wines are 100% Mencía. [[Garnacha Tintorera]] is the secondary red grape, although there are also experimental plantings of other varieties, including [[Merlot]] and [[Cabernet Sauvignon]]. Whites may contain [[Godello]], [[Doña Blanca]], [[Palomino]] and [[Malvasia]].

Bierzo produces much inexpensive bulk table wine but an influx of smaller bodegas around the turn of the millenium are producing modern-styled wines attracting international critical acclaim.
