Tasted by DHJ1968 on 2/19/2024: Excellent aged chenin. Classical flavor profile and the mouthfeel is both steely and creamy. Really good stuff with an hour of air and a warm up to near room temp. Hard to imagine it getting better, but going strong with some years to go. (86 views)
Tasted by jwsmith on 4/16/2022 & rated 92 points: Wow what a surprise this wine started closed and then opened up with salty mineral white flowers very focused more linear than sancerre just a a different breed great wine aged perfectly./... (395 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 8/17/2019 & rated 91 points: Brad Feels Like Cooking Dinner (Brad's Place, St. Paul, MN): Light straw color. Drank a glass over an hour. Citrus, white peach, wool, mineral, sleek and focused. Very good. (1264 views)
Tasted by Bozekt on 8/30/2016 & rated 92 points: Wow! Trademark Loire Chenin - nose of wet wool, chamomile tea, white flowers. Very aromatic. Palate has moderate to moderate-plus acid, yet a round body. Flavors of quince come to mind, but this wine is just so eclectic - it's much more about the nose than palate. After about an hour in glass, the chamomile notes shined through more and became apparent on the palate as well. Can easily go a few more years, but drinking well now. (2616 views)
Tasted by ElGreco on 3/12/2016 & rated 91 points: These Baumard screwtops are showing very well (11 year old white).
This bottle is definitely demonstrating some more youthfulness compared to the 05 from a few months ago. On the nose some musty ricola-like aromatics blend in with wet wool, green tea, and something that reminds me of a creek/brook. On the palate I detect some sweetness (I didn't pick this up from the previous bottle), but much higher acidity (hence the youthfulness). Overall this has a very gorgeous ethereal quality. Major flavors at play are tea, apple, nutmeg, cinnamon, and pear. (2851 views)
Tasted by JohnSh on 1/24/2016 & rated 91 points: The last few glasses had opened up more, so I think a 2-3 hour decant is warranted. Still tastes young to me, although there are secondary butterscotch notes evident. Didn't take notes, but this was a solid Savennieres, medium bodied, dry, with rich mineral, lanolin and stonefruit flavours. Relatively low in alcohol, which comes through in the fresh finish. Great QPR (A-). (2898 views)
Tasted by ElGreco on 10/31/2015 & rated 90 points: Nose: Quite pretty. Floral, quince, and chestnut.
Palate: Mature and rounded. Diminished acidity (to be expected). Lingering salinity, pear, and fig on the finish. Bone dry. Drink now. (2855 views)
Tasted by cos65 on 9/5/2015: Fairly light straw colored, light aromas. This seems fairly innocuous at this point, acidity gone and seeming rather thinned out. It's hard to imagine this gaining much from further cellaring. (2555 views)
Tasted by isaacjamesbaker on 3/31/2015 & rated 90 points: Pale yellow color. Lovely nose of sea salt, crushed chalk, quince and lime. Medium bodied, tangy acid. Dry and mineral-driven, but I like the pulpy tropical notes, like pineapple and kumquat drizzled with honey. Lots of sea salt and chalk dust notes though, along with hints of white tea and mussel shells that come out with time. Even more expressive on day two. Still going strong, still lively, a delicious wine. (1321 views)
Tasted by fearlesswine on 12/15/2014: Ah, back to France! Though its sensual mid-palate certainly commands attention, delicacy and subtlety predominate in this Savennieres.

A soft yellowish-blond hue, with a nose that recalls ripe winter pears, honey and beeswax. On the palate, a minor tang of chamomile, with a creamy and polished mouthfeel, resolving to a light-but-lingering note of cinnamon on the finish.

Its acid has softened to reveal a tantalizingly refreshing and calming wine. For those who would wish for even more honey and wax, and other possible secondary notes, I suspect this one would continue to age well. We had this alongside baked salmon dressed with dill, and it was a continual delight! (1248 views)
Tasted by stevenc.rees@gmail.com on 4/22/2013: I'll keep half of this for tomorrow when I sear some lamb chops to go with something or other... This will get me ready for dinner. Maybe deglaze the pan if I run out of cognac....
Last bottle, looking forward to a big tasty glass of Loire wonderfulness. (2045 views)
Tasted by Billigan on 3/10/2013 & rated 90 points: Drinking beautifully and consistently with my previous notes. (2288 views)
Tasted by markellen.foodies@gmail.com on 11/19/2012 & rated 93 points: Brown Bag Wine Dinner @ Two Chefs - All White (TWO CHEFS, MIAMI, FL): - Yellow color with fast forming legs. It's in total harmony with a medium body. Bright texture with a medium finish - Al's wine. (2656 views)
Tasted by Billigan on 7/3/2012 & rated 91 points: My last and favorite bottle of this wine. All the classic scents of orange peel, beeswax, and wooly funk married to an unctuous, creamy mouthfeel. Much fatter and rounder than your normal-vintage Savennieres, with the acidity taking a clear backseat, but still a wonderful food wine, and like any good Savennieres, a completely sui generis beverage. (2510 views)
Tasted by Billigan on 12/3/2011 & rated 90 points: Consistent with my previous notes. Always excellent stuff. (3028 views)
Tasted by pbjosh on 8/22/2011: Somewhat oily in texture, sweet white fruits, waxy and honey and white flowers. Lots of cut though, brimming with rainwater and wet stone. Very easy drinking and moreish. A bit ripe perhaps but not lacking in energy. (2189 views)
Tasted by clutj on 8/21/2011 & rated 92 points: Well-rounded, soft, long finish; showing no age that I can tell (2093 views)
Tasted by Billigan on 6/23/2011 & rated 90 points: Enjoyed with grilled shrimp and summer salad, and it was wonderful. Same scents and flavors as last time, but I let it warm up a little more and could better appreciate the complexity and interplay of textures and flavors in this bottle. (2507 views)
Tasted by isaacjamesbaker on 6/23/2011 & rated 90 points: Drank with blaine and jerusha. Light lemon color. Nose of oatmeal, wax, green melon. Palate is rich and honeyed. Wax, wet stones, lemon peel and melon. A rush of minerals and a flavor that reminds me of school paste. Gorgeous. Could age for another ten years. (2228 views)
Tasted by timewithwine on 6/2/2011: The silver moon color of this invites the curious eye to follow the nose led on by whispers of wet slate, lanolin, white grapefruit, white blossoms, white pepper, diesel and anise. The mouthfeel is round, but firmly framed like an athletic model. Everything is in place. Picking a nit, the finish is not as long as I would have liked. You just want this wine to go and on. This may be the low end of Baumard’s line up, but this is no low end wine. Closure is Stelvin. 13% alc. With grilled shrimp and fennel; excellent pairing. Recommended. (95 views)
Tasted by Matt Scott on 3/12/2011 & rated 91 points: Unscrewed the cap and let it breathe for an hour. Light golden with a touch of honey. Granny-smith apple, key-lime pie, river stones, citrus and green melon. Laser focused and very clean. Long, smooth and fine complexity, a Chenin Blanc which is really made for aging in that at over five years of age, this Savennieres delight has a very young yet harmonized aspect. Perfect for most seafood dishes and worth cellaring. Drink now - 2020. (2723 views)
Tasted by Billigan on 3/3/2011 & rated 89 points: From a half-bottle and drank with grilled trout. My first Savennieres, and I loved it! Petrol and wax and floral notes all came together in a beautifully textured wine that balanced a creamy feel with food-friendly acid. Excellent value. (2768 views)
Tasted by jlm on 1/29/2011: Typical Chenin nose of yellow apples and wax. The mouthfeel is classic too, somehow more solid than liquid, and yet there's no sense of its being overly large or heavy. The wine is definitely in its in-between stage though; it's not particularly complex right now. (2642 views)
Tasted by jeff nowak on 11/19/2010 & rated 91 points: wow. my chin is still sore from the recent insulting slap in the face by kstoddard regarding my opinion on this wine. let's face it, i guess when you have 10,000+ notes, you develop not only a superior palate, but a superior sense of your importance in the wine world, which empowers one to throw their not so little weight around. hey! cut out a milk shake now and then, tubby. but, ironically, i drank another bottle with his wife at the enchantment resort in sedona when he was in europe a couple of weeks ago, and...sensational. the wine was really good, too. who said context can't influence the performance of a wine? (3302 views)
Tasted by kstoddard on 11/1/2010 & rated 90 points: Straw yellow color. Aromas of tropical fruit and petrol. Well balanced with good acidity and freshness. Nice complexity and depth on both the mid palate and finish. 13% alcohol. What a great bargain at $13.99/bottle and by a land slide my personal best QPR of the year. BTW that Nowak guy wouldn't know a good wine if it hit him in the face, Jane on the other hand helps bring up the average :) (3259 views)

(Baumard Savennieres) #3; COLOR-golden; NOSE-this is wild; a little orange peel/Gran Marnier action; heavy dose of ripe pear dripping all over you; sugar cubes; very high floral action as well; very spicy & racy (radish); very complex; a hint of burnt rubber; TASTE-very dry; this is an exceptional food wine (especially w/ shellfish); the wine is very creamy on the palate; heavier viscosity on the mouthfeel than I expected; undeniably this wine has very pure pear flavors on the mid-palate; good length; nice acid coming through on the back-end; missing a little of the oomph; a gorgeous mouthfeel; drink now; I'm a little disappointed as I had high hopes for this great producer; WS-90; GV-88+  88+ points

Savennières

Savennières is a small, relatively well-known Loire Valley region producing wines made from the chenin blanc grape.

They are not conventionally fruity, and benefit from extensive aging.

Savennieres often have smells like white truffles and animal notes, even when young. They can last for a tremendous amount of time, and some people mistake the evolved aromas after 10-20 years with oxidization, but I have yet to taste an oxidised chenin blanc, since the amount and type of acidity (many g/l and tartaric) preserve the fruit in a much more effective way than e.g. chardonnay.
