Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.5 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 93 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Eric on 10/2/2023 & rated 90 points: I was worried this would be tired, but it was quite pretty. Cherry on the palate and a hint of fig on the finish. Mature. Tasty. Spicy. Pretty nice. (840 views)
Tasted by lepetitchateau on 9/6/2023 flawed bottle: Heavily corked - a 9 on the cork-o-meter (493 views)
Tasted by CLL on 12/25/2020 & rated 93 points: Lovely, elegant, but not particularly complex. Likely past it’s peak. (1914 views)
Tasted by beatles on 4/29/2020 & rated 92 points: Quite elegant, fully mature, smooth with no hard edges. Good Grenache-character, some local garrigue. Drink up IMHO.
#PBinthegarden (2840 views)
Tasted by beatles on 8/8/2019 & rated 93 points: Fully mature with lots of sous bois and tertiary notes, hints of cofee in the aftertaste. Still fruit here, and a very well balanced wine, tannins fully resolved.
#BistrioDinnerChezMoi (3409 views)
Tasted by portman63 on 1/11/2019 & rated 88 points: It was a mature and resolved bottle with good fruit for the first 90 min. However, it showed it's being from a warm vintage with less acidity so it fell off in the finish and the fruit dropped off after that ~90 min mark. It was enjoyable with dinner, but seems like a drink now proposition based on this bottle. (3191 views)
Tasted by Quiet Lion on 4/13/2018 & rated 93 points: Popped and poured, probably should have decanted briefly as it integrated after an hour or so. Initially beautiful saddle leather on the nose, later tobacco. On the palate fuzzy dark chocolate and raspberries. Long finish. It evolved quickly and I was concerned it might be falling apart but it finished strong. Definitely a style of CdP I enjoy. (3960 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 1/24/2018 & rated 92 points: Southern Rhone (mostly CDP's) with Craig's Group (Tilia): This wine had great secondary and tertiary flavors. Leather and earth. Almost everyone else at the table got barnyard funk on this wine, but I did not. This is well integrated and in a great place. (3340 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 1/21/2018 & rated 94 points: Monthly Tasting Group: Southern Rhones (Tilia, Mpls): Very dark red color. This got 2 hours of slow-ox; drank 1 glass over an hour plus. This was in great shape, and had a marvelous nose of funk, saddle leather, dank earth, crushed flowers, spearmint, and a mix of red and black fruits, cherry, black cherry. The palate is full bodied, balanced and consistent with the nose, with integrating tannins and long finish. Really good. (3518 views)
 Tasted by d'Artagnan on 7/16/2016 & rated 91 points: À la Beaugravière
91 pts (4091 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 3/20/2016: Another rough bottle (3882 views)
Tasted by beatles on 3/8/2016 & rated 93 points: Châteauneuf-du-Pape 1998 (Chez moi): Cool, balanced, long - relaxed, very good for the warm vintage, keeps going. Will live. (3133 views)
Tasted by cephomer on 2/14/2016 & rated 91 points: Mark Freds brought this over to the professors house last nite and we drank this alongside a 1995 CdP Chapoutier Barbe Rac. Interesting match-up. The 1998 was light, fruity, quite fresh & aromatic with cherries & some tobacco aromas on the nose. This comes across to me as a modern-style wine, yet with some traditional elements thrown in the mix. Still some wood showing in the mix. Tannins mostly resolved, good acidity level and decent length. This wine, however, is mostly about sweet & sour cherries, with some leather, tobacco & earth notes mixed in. Quite lively and fresh tasting, and didn't seem as old as it is but for the noticeable lack of tannins. (3473 views)
 Tasted by k H i L o on 12/28/2015 & rated 92 points: Super. A boire. (3548 views)
Tasted by JM_MadTown on 10/23/2015 & rated 91 points: Very nice traditionally made CdP. This wine is very mature, but still has a few years to go. Notes of kirsch, garrigue, dark red fruits with a medium to long finish. Very soft tannins. (2741 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 9/30/2015 flawed bottle: Flawed...corked with an awful finish like really stale beer unless it's a different microbe (2530 views)
Tasted by beatles on 5/9/2015 & rated 91 points: Still cloudy, but has gained focus and elegance - stood well; dusty nose, elegant, light showing, that hints Rayas even, with a bits of garrigue and some alcohol at the end. Mature, and won't improve, I think. (with Pacalet at CP) (2783 views)
Tasted by ZinRandy on 4/24/2015 & rated 92 points: Has stood the test of time (2632 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 11/27/2014: Cloudy and too funky for my taste
Not sure if this just age or a not particularly good bottle (2998 views)
Tasted by Harry Cantrell on 11/15/2014 & rated 92 points: This straddles old and new like a 75 yo cowboy riding his new steed. Cloudy garnet. Nose of a mix of rustic garrigue and berries. Taste was similar, more on the garrigue side in the mouth. (2776 views)
Tasted by rhanke on 8/7/2014 & rated 93 points: much better then my last bottle. this one was singing. (3087 views)
Tasted by EricLi on 12/24/2013 & rated 94 points: A little funky nose. Earthy and dark fruit. Sediment in the bottle and very muddy. Dull red and Brick color on the edge. Definitely not the one would win a beauty contest. However, what a taste! I had a year ago and a few in between. Very consistently smooth tannins coating all around. Meaty and chewy and woodchips with a hint of sweetness to spice it up. What a gem with only 13% alcohol level. Highly recommended. (3756 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 12/22/2013 & rated 87 points: I got the second to last tasting pour with some sediment in it. But even trying to ignore the sediment, the wine seemed a murky red and tasted dirty. No fruit to speak of, all secondary/tertiary flavors that were not very enjoyable. (3730 views)
Tasted by beatles on 12/7/2013 & rated 91 points: Quite foggy and unclear. Just a bit brownish in the edge, but not overly so. The taste has initially some secondary and tertiary notes, but quickly the fruit shines through all though it is a peppery, Gigondas-like fruit. Not sure about this; either it is fading or maybe just waiting to come around, nice wine, but for now lacking some of the generosity on expects from a great neuf. Think I have one left, will save it. (3363 views)
Tasted by winemaker on 9/11/2013 flawed bottle: Last bottle of 3 and it was corked! I hate that! (3740 views)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
