Tasted by Claret & CdP Gang on 4/21/2024: Second last bottle from a case, opened an hour before drinking, black & red fruits, no Pegau funk, mellow in the mouth, tannins all resolved, a bit too light on the palate, may not have been a good bottle as it had a slight leak upon purchase (1286 views)
Tasted by Chaswinesnob on 4/7/2024 & rated 95 points: first three bottles i open were tongue twisters they were so tight. this bottle was delightful. classic Pegau. loved it (2488 views)
Tasted by lkilpio on 3/29/2024 & rated 95 points: This full-bodied wine was still fruity, but it was also having a nicely tannic structure. The wine was providing very pleasant notes of ripe dark fruits and herbs, but even the funky barnyard notes were present. In my opinion, this wine is now very enjoyable and probably on its peak. (1738 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 2/29/2024: Wine group NR & SR dinner at A-Side Public House in St Paul MN. Samll pour from the other table. I love the vintage but still too tannic at this point, for my liking. This needs at least 3 more years for the structure to meld or perhaps a lot more air as I don't know how much air this got?? Right now, 90pts if forced to score what I drank tonight. This will easily be a 93+ wine with age or more air? (3928 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 2/28/2024 & rated 93 points: Any Rhone (A Side Public House): The Pegau profile is evident, only a touch of brett on this bottle. Kirsch, garrigue, mushroom, leather and funk. (3667 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 2/25/2024 & rated 93 points: Monthly Tasting Group: All the Rhones (A - Side Public House, St. Paul, MN): Dark red color. Two hour decant. Drank a glass over an hour. Funky, brett, mushroom, spicy garrigue, horse leather, dark cherry, lacqueur, medium full bodied, classic Pegau. Not too much by any means, loved it. 93+ to 94pts. (3806 views)
Tasted by oakville72 on 2/22/2024 & rated 93 points: Terrific and perfectly balanced. Still a plethora of fruit. At its peak. Yum! (3658 views)
Tasted by Oechsle on 2/20/2024 & rated 94 points: See prior notes:
Served in Burgundy glass nose is really something to experience. Open for business 30 minutes after cork pull. If you like your fruit (black cherry and black raspberry) balanced against non fruit (Leather, Musk and Smoke) components its in a good place at the moment.
Acidity spot on, tannins noticeable but supportive, medium plus weight with good concentration, Palate almost creamy underneath tannic backbone, Mourvèdre shines here, Yes, there is some barnyard but, when served temp 60-65 its very minimal. Alc 14% seems understated, buzz buzz, yet there is no sense of heat.
Day 2 after vacuum and chill brings more robust tannins and Uber Leather. Further aging should accentuate the non fruit components. Purchased upon release, stored accordingly, enjoyed with grilled beef… Na zdrowie (4257 views)
Tasted by MuddyBear on 2/16/2024 flawed bottle: Bad bottle. (3336 views)
Tasted by Eric on 2/10/2024: ESTG does Pegau-Palooza (Seattle, WA, USA): Mmm, so SPICY, such white pepper, tannic, powerful and intense. On day 2, this has not budged even the slightest. If anything it is fresher, more tannic, more spicy, and more powerful. To me the 2010 is one of the most promising vintages in the past 20 years, but tasting this across 2 days it is literally 20 years away from being remotely ready. Truly impressive. (4336 views)
Tasted by Purple Tooth on 2/7/2024 & rated 96 points: **The most under valued wines for the price are produced in southern rhone. Buy a case each year and laugh. I give this a BBB rating.Barnyard, Bacon, and BO... with gobs of dark red saturated fruit. This is adult stuff and my Bordeaux collection texted me last night, complaining/alleging that they see this relationship as adulterous. A lawsuit is bound to follow shortly. Meanwhile, I will drink more of this and try and get rid of the evidence before a suit is actually filed. (4307 views)
Tasted by dsimmons on 1/10/2024: first of three. good but not great. amore time maybe (5198 views)
Tasted by Chamathp on 1/7/2024 & rated 93 points: This is good. Very good. (4943 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 12/30/2023 & rated 97 points: From MAG, Excellent showing again of this wine, stunned the new years diiner crowd. Very complex nose with red and dark fruit, smoke, leather, beef blood, farmyard funk, the brett is just at a max level here before it becomes too dominant. I like the acidity and tannins here as well they buffer the for a CdP moderate alc of 14%. Wonderful (5045 views)
Tasted by Cake & Fine Wine on 12/28/2023 & rated 94 points: Despite a 2 hour decant, I got the renowned funk on this, more so than a bottle I opened around 2 years ago (which I’d rate a point higher). But still a joy to drink - sweet red fruit, plum, cherry, licorice, pastille, herb de Provence. This was a refreshing change after a few days drinking Bordeaux! I drank most of the bottle without food (over a game of monopoly). (4132 views)
Tasted by ClaytonDave on 12/25/2023 & rated 95 points: Classic, terroir-driven CDP. cherry and licorice on the palate. Ready now. (3685 views)
Tasted by melvinyeowq on 12/22/2023 & rated 94 points: French but no Burgundy/Bordeaux theme: Clearly a traditional CDP with very good restraint, guessed it to be another Pegau. Silky and elegant, some maraschino cherries. Superb backbone from the fine vintage. Excellent. (3759 views)
Tasted by Vl.antonoff on 11/21/2023: kl (4567 views)
Tasted by DCHawkeye on 10/22/2023 & rated 93 points: Probably every bit as good as the bottle of the '10 from earlier in the week, but discounting a point due to the not to great glasses. (To be fair, we were drinking it at the Meadowlands before the NY Giants/Washington football game.) (5541 views)
Tasted by DCHawkeye on 10/16/2023 & rated 94 points: A bigger wine than the '09, this is starting to really hit its drinking window. An outstanding Cuvee Reservee, this should have at least a decade ahead of it. (5197 views)
Tasted by Jhalpern27 on 9/19/2023 & rated 96 points: What a difference a bottle makes, this one out of a magnum and decanted 1.5hours. This got better and better as the night went on. This was served at our magnum Moron event against many other French CDP and California GSM, and Syrah and this was by far the wine of the night. Just amazing, looking forward to the last of my 750’s (6025 views)
Tasted by Discobiscuits42 on 9/11/2023 & rated 91 points: Needs time to come together. Big tannins and pretty loose. Not much tertiary flavor at this time. Not bad but disjointed (5487 views)
Tasted by Colowine on 9/10/2023: Compared to the '08 this still needs a couple years. Nice wine though (4961 views)
Tasted by Barakahn on 9/5/2023: 94 (4938 views)
Tasted by grapist on 7/15/2023 & rated 98 points: Opened at home for hours before bringing to the restaurant. Aromas of lush, fruit loops from the bottle upon removing the cork. This is a very big wine, bursting with fruit. Plums, blackberries, leather, spices, tobacco, red meat, and so much more. They should last for another 10 years. (5556 views)

Domaine du Pégau is a beloved icon of traditionalism in Châteauneuf du Pape, crafting wines that dually epitomize the Châteauneuf style of the Southern Rhône while being unmistakably Pégau. Long owned by the Féraud family, the estate is run by the charming Laurence, a Parker Wine Advocate Wine Personality of the Year who was exceptionally well-schooled by her father Paul. Despite receiving six 100-point scores in less than 10 years, Domaine du Pégau is a down to earth specimen of Southern France hospitality.

Pégau produces three high-end Châteauneuf-du-Pape cuvées: the traditional Cuvée Reservée, the special Cuvée Laurence, and the incredible Cuvée da Capo (made from the best grapes in only the best years). These wines are aged in large old oak foudres for at least 18 months in the case of the Reservée, and much longer for Laurence and Capo.

Robert Parker of The Wine Advocate summarizes the house style as follows: “This superb estate fashions an old style, massive, unbelievably rich, rustic Châteauneuf du Pape. If you want to taste what the old style Châteauneuf du Pape of the forties, fifties, and early sixties tasted like, buy a bottle of Domaine du Pégau. They are rich, rustic, sometimes massive Châteauneuf du Papes made with no concession to modern-day tastes.” Furthermore, he continues “I have long been a huge fan of this estate, and have put my money where my mouth is, having purchased all of Pégau’s vintages since 1979.” Heady praise indeed from the world’s leading wine critic.

Domaine du Pégau’s wine have developed a cult-like following among savvy consumers, who adore their expressive style, unique personality and still-affordable prices for the quality and experience they deliver.

“There is a secret in the knowledge transmitted over generations.” — Laurence Féraud

Domaine du Pegau is run by Laurence Feraud and her father Paul.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
