Community Tasting Notes (average 91.1 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 72 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by robmatic on 5/20/2022 & rated 88 points: Last bottle of this, and it was decidedly tired of life. Still holds interest, but a major disappointment since the previous bottle a year and a half ago was superb. Drink up. (680 views)
Tasted by UMRich on 9/16/2021 & rated 92 points: In a great spot. Cherry and savory (forest floor?) notes, moderate acidity helped it pair wonderfully with Pasta alla Norma (945 views)
Tasted by Eichelhof on 3/6/2021 & rated 92 points: Fully mature now - drank without decanting - was marvelous in the glass for 4-5 hours. Perfect Brunello - soft, charming, still complex and valuable. (943 views)
Tasted by mcromain1021 on 2/6/2021 & rated 92 points: Fully mature Brunello. Hints of cherry, strawberry, mushroom/truffle. Very slight bricking and nicely integrated tannins. Popped and poured and enjoyed over the next 2 hours. Held up nicely and has a couple more years before decline. Drink now an over the next 2 years. Sesta is a great QPR and a favorite of mine. (1055 views)
Tasted by robmatic on 10/5/2020 & rated 92 points: Drinking beautifully right now, spot on. Tannins are soft but abundant and healthy. Great fruit but not in your face with freshness, more subdued, cool. No hard edges, just smooth while also retaining intensity and focus. Should be great to drink over the next few years. (1095 views)
Tasted by Zitan on 6/6/2020 & rated 95 points: Wow. I paid $28 a bottle for this in 2011. This was the 4th one and by far the best. Decanted for 15 minutes and drank. Very little sediment. Sweet, rich, perfumed nose of violets. Tannins almost completely resolved. Earthy, leathery and deep on palate. Great length. At or approaching peak - will hold at least 3-5 years. Happy I have two more - wish I had more.

1/28/2023 - 2 1/2 years later, I opened another… still a lovely bottle but there’s a tiredness sneaking in that wasn’t there in 2020 - drink up! (759 views)
Tasted by PrinceKyrris on 5/15/2020 & rated 93 points: First experience with aged Brunello. Garnet colored, could see through it in the glass. Nose of sage, berry, and leather. On the palate, firm tannins that are integrated. Flavours of ripe raspberry, savory herbs, and a touch of sweet tobacco. Very enjoyable bottle that us drinking nicely now. I do not foresee it improving but imagine it will hold steady for another year if properly stored. Was perfect with homemade paparadelle and ragù bolognese. (649 views)
Tasted by Beaunedoc on 10/24/2019 & rated 93 points: Sooo graceful! My last bottle was all about development. Fine leathers on the nose, autumnal flavors on the palate. Vinous and underbrush in nature. The fine tannins added some nice texture with food and the acidity provided a freshness despite the maturity of the wine. Sooo graceful! So pleasant and so easy to drink. (798 views)
Tasted by CHINACAT on 12/1/2018 & rated 90 points: Dark, ripe, rich and brawny, but still a bit tannic. Not my favorite style of Brunello, but quite good. Might still be a few years from its prime. (921 views)
Tasted by CADomer on 3/2/2018 & rated 91 points: Completely shut down, tight, and confusingly unapproachable upon opening. Put the cork back in the bottle and tried it two days later. Completely different and more of what I expected to begin with. Ripe cherries, wild flowers, and spice. Quite enjoyable. (1313 views)
Tasted by shellylowen on 1/15/2018 & rated 93 points: Full body, sweet tannins, long finish, medium acidity. Super with lamb shank (1199 views)
Tasted by JGinMO on 11/27/2017 & rated 91 points: Memorable perhaps, but extremely enjoyable brunello in a good drinking window. (1303 views)
Tasted by EMTAME on 6/7/2017 & rated 87 points: Musty nose of forest floor and old wood over faint raspberry jam. The palate shows tart red cherries, more wood, oregano, and some alcoholic warmth. There's decent acidity here but the palate is somewhat muddled by a degree of funkiness that becomes more pronounced with air. (1762 views)
Tasted by pilatus88 on 12/19/2016 & rated 89 points: Nice red fruit and some long finish of dry cedar wood and cranberries. (1856 views)
Tasted by aaquino09 on 1/3/2016: Mistake removed (2549 views)
Tasted by shellylowen on 11/25/2015 & rated 92 points: Sweet cherry, med-light body, satiny tannins, long finish. (2612 views)
Tasted by epiphany on 4/6/2015 & rated 90 points: 90 for the noise alone. Taste not up to the task though. (3188 views)
Tasted by smcilhen on 3/23/2015: First of 4 bottles. 6 hr decant. Bam Man's note is very good. However, I disagree a bit with Rechrom, as I think there was a little TOO MUCH fruit here....very surprising. It is a well made, smooth, modern-styled, and balanced brunello. The tannins are still there so perhaps time will integrate more of the sweet fruit....looking forward to trying down the road. (3148 views)
Tasted by Bam_Man on 3/27/2014 & rated 92 points: First one of these in 15 months. Seems to have gotten darker in color and now shows noticeably more on the nose. Subtle, attractive aromas of leather, flowers, earth and dark berries. Full-bodied and very pure and focused. There is a laser-like intensity to the tangy sour cherry fruit on both the front- and mid-palates. Nicely balanced, with a lively acidity. The luscious fruit persists beautifully through the long, mouth-watering finish. Still just a bit tannic, this will likely be even better in another year or two. A terrific Brunello and also a fantastic bargain at around $30.

Tasted by Rechrom on 12/27/2013 & rated 91 points: Tart cherry, zippy acidity, tannins present. Works great with food, good but not quite as pleasant alone. Age might integrate this and improve it, but I wonder whether there is sufficient fruit to go too much longer. (3238 views)
Tasted by eluebchow on 11/24/2013 & rated 90 points: This is a ripe, robust young Brunello that will definitely benefit from some additional time in the bottle; While slightly austere initially, this opened up after several hours of air to feature bright red berry and cherry flavors, with firm tannins on the medium finish; Hold or drink now with a decant (3049 views)
Tasted by JGinMO on 10/23/2013 & rated 91 points: benefited from 60 minutes air after decanting (2726 views)
Tasted by shellylowen on 10/2/2013 & rated 91 points: Nice sour cherry flavored, very silky tannins. Crisp acidity might be too much for some people. (2819 views)
Tasted by Paul S on 5/4/2013 & rated 91 points: By the bottle this time at La Barca. Tossed into the decanter for an hour or so, this was a nice little Brunello that went a treat with Bistecca Fiorentina. Tight at first, it opened up with air to show an interesting nose, where sweet blackberries and dark cherries were wreathed with a gentle but insistent curl of smoke, tar and roasted herb on a bed of dried earth. I kinda liked that. The palate was very much a child of the 2006 vintage. It had a nice, round fleshiness to its ripe blackberry notes, with good, mouthfilling depth. Yet this was also marked by a classic balance of juicy acidity and a nicely structured backbone or ripe, but chewy tannins that made it a very good pairing for the food. With time, some nicely savoury notes started floating out on the midpalate and into its nicely lingering finish where bits of tar, smoke and dried herb took the fore. Drinkable enough with some air and a nice bit of meat, but this will definitely benefit from a few more years in the bottle, where it should picked up a bit more complexity. (3320 views)
Tasted by GalvezGuy on 4/18/2013 & rated 91 points: Popped and poured. Nice sour cherry nose with hints of tobacco, earth, and leather. On the palate rich with sour cherry and earth with a nice leathery texture. Finishes with sturdy tannins and great acidity. Drink with a short decant or continue to hold. (2242 views)

Sangiovese

SANGIOVESE: (Pronounced "sahn-joh-vhe-se").
Sangiovese - Italy's claim to fame, the pride of Tuscany. Traditionally made, the wines are full of cherry fruit, earth, and cedar. It produces Chianti (Classico), Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montepulciano, Montefalco Rosso, and many others. Sangiovese is also the backbone in many of the acclaimed, modern-styled "Super-Tuscans", where it is blended with Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc) and typically aged in French oak barrels, resulting a wine primed for the international market in the style of a typical California cabernet: oaky, high-alcohol, and a ripe, jammy, fruit-forward profile.[16]

Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. Has many clonal versions, two of which seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine. The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, also known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines. Old vine derived wine is often used in the better versions, needing several years ageing to reach peak. A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province. Recent efforts in California with clones of this variety are very promising, producing medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plumlike flavors and aromas. Among the available clonal versions are R6 and R7, derived from the Montalcino region of Italy, having average productivity/ripening and producing small berries on medium size clusters. R10 and R24 are well-recommended. R23, listed as deriving from the Emilia-Romagna region, has good vigor with medium-small clusters with earlier ripening. R102 derives from the Montepulciano region and reported to have average vigor with moderate productivity that results in higher sugar levels and good acidity from medium-small berries on medium-small clusters. Has synonym name of Nielluccio where grown in Corsica.
