Community Tasting Notes (average 89.3 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 43 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by bottles.and.bites on 8/23/2023 & rated 87 points: Dark brambly fruit, bordering stewed fruit. Dank earthiness, crushed flowers after the rain. Not bad, acidity is still lively, but fruit profile is a little off putting. (241 views)
Tasted by vinero on 7/7/2018 & rated 90 points: Dark with a good edge of brown in the glass, indicating that the wine is relatively developped. The nose is quite strong. Without decanting, the wine showed first rather tertiary/plummy, but after a while came better together, with pronounced acidity. Seeing previous TN’s, this wine has kept fairly nice, but is on the decline and should be drunk up. (1891 views)
Tasted by Jeff W on 8/17/2013: On the downhill path, I fear. The fruit is still there, all meat and blood and earth, but the acidic backbone has become more prominent. Still enjoyable, but I wouldn't wait much longer. vg (5939 views)
Tasted by WilD on 12/7/2012 & rated 89 points: Decanted for 1 hr. Funky earthy nose. Acid is still strong..... (6678 views)
Tasted by nwinther on 2/6/2011 & rated 89 points: A bit murky color - developed brown edge. Nose full of pepperoni (yes - the pizza-kind. A first for me!) and smoke. Palate of muted fruit and plenty of developed notes, such as cedar-wood, tobacco and coffee-grind. Medium finish. Drink now. (8420 views)
Tasted by WildeMeeuw on 1/17/2011 & rated 87 points: 2000 Delas Frères Hermitage Marquise de la Tourette (Frankrijk, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage) Kleur: Diep donkerrood Aroma / bouquet: Kruidig, donker fruit, bramen / bessen. Smaak / Afdronk: Krachtig zuur, duidelijk pepertje, superzachte tannines, Algemeen / potentieel: Mooie zachte Shiraz. 50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 10 + Smaak / Afdronk: 14 + Algemeen / potentieel: 8 = 87/100 (8274 views)
Tasted by KristianT on 12/24/2010 & rated 87 points: Very rustic on the nose - barnyard-like. Nice and soft, but not incredibly interesting. (7011 views)
Tasted by Mats_L on 9/3/2010 & rated 89 points: Initially a bit closed, opened up after 1 h. Meaty scent with sausage, red currants. Good balance in acidity and the remaining tannins. Good to drink now and in the near future. (4136 views)
Tasted by Baron Samedi on 4/17/2010 & rated 87 points: Mature. Good wine although not comparable to the 2001. Considerable sediment so I would counsel decanting. However it faded rather quickly so don´t overdo air time. (3598 views)
Tasted by PeterMole on 12/20/2009: Nog niet rond genoeg. Was na 1 dag karaf beter, dus laten liggen nog. (2670 views)
Tasted by MauriceE on 12/6/2009 & rated 90 points: When just poored it was almost sweet. But I have rarely seen a wine evolving so fast, after about 10 minutes(!!) it showed an almost too old age, maggi, spices, etc. A very good wine indeed, but drink now or soon. (3762 views)
Tasted by mebydef on 12/3/2009 & rated 89 points: This is a bit over the hill. I just got it, so I’m uncertain of the storage history. The nose was very tea and tobacco like. There was some complexity underneath such as bacon fat and black olive, but the other components were overshadowed by the wood and vegetal elements. There was also some good mineral. After the bottle had been open a little while, the juice took on some weight. It was enjoyable, but nothing special. (3688 views)
Tasted by aktormedic on 11/13/2009: Against a 2005 Copain Harrison Clarke it was far more reticent on the nose, with a unbalanced nature that after 1-2 hours settled down into a complex, supple wine that was clearly of a different level of material in comparison to the Copain. Light and vet very full. Typically great northern Rhone. (3787 views)
Tasted by petrusncoke on 7/28/2009 & rated 91 points: Pretty nose of olive tapenade, meat juice, minerals, and black fruits seasoned with white pepper. The palate segues in to soft elegant plums and blackberries, with more spice, blood, iron, game meats, and leather. Incredibly polished and elegant, with lovely acidity and softend tannins that yet should give this wine another ten years of life. (4043 views)
Tasted by MLD11 on 5/14/2009 & rated 92 points: Fantastic. Drank with the 1990 and it is clearly the same wine. Bacon, blood and spice. (4180 views)
Tasted by Griffin on 11/21/2008: (13% vol)
No formal notes but this was a very delightful wine. The wine was rather smooth on the palate with a nice touch of acidity. There were notes of cocoa, violets, and smoked raw meat on the finish. Overall, there was a core of sweetness that reminded me of a Californian wine (in a positive way). J- really enjoyed the wine and we both thought that it had a lot to offer. We quickly went through the bottle, which was opened without decanting, and the wine actually over-shadowed the lasagna. (4020 views)
Tasted by peterkj on 11/20/2008 & rated 90 points: Syrah/Shiraz (Torsdagsklubben, Palle): Farve: Mørk rød med rød kant. Aroma: Vanillie, skovbær, frisk. Smag: Jorbær, solbær, blød, rund, blomme. Eftersmag: Lidt tannin. Super lækker vin. Pris: 349 kr. (4666 views)
Tasted by Brad L on 8/9/2008: Shucks - there is so much quality here - clearly in the vineyard - and yet the corporate sheen is buffed to high polish. I'd guess maybe 30% new oak, and it is just too much. I threw it in the decanter and the oak did integrate...to some degree. These spoof lite wines are not as bad as the full throttle ones, but then again, why bother? I do think this particular wine will age and the oak will integrate hopefully into a state where it isn't noticeable...this bottle was certainly opened on the early side... The Bessards juice added to this vintage helps. (4056 views)
Tasted by WAS on 4/6/2008: A huge bouquet of black fruits, tar, pepper, and bacon. Full body with soft tannins offer lovely drinking. Not a long finish but it's ready NOW! I doubt that it's long for aging. (4487 views)
Tasted by thirtyoneknots on 1/15/2008: Split three ways, with the first glass run through an aerator and the second poured from the bottle, about 30-40 min later. The aerated glass showed an immense note of smoked meats on the nose with dark fruit licorice dirt and smoke on the palate. As it opened up the earthy aspects faded and more fruit showed through. The second glass, straight from the bottle, had a huge nose of bell pepper which soon blew off; one of the most obvious aromas I have ever picked up on any wine, it was really uncanny. This was the first Northern Rhone wine I have ever tried and it joins a short list of wines that have been able to change my outlook on wine appreciation. I'd highly recommend this and would love to explore more in this region. (4526 views)
Tasted by G.O. on 1/12/2008 & rated 88 points: Drinking very well now, but lacks depth and longer aftertaste to reach 90ths. Good nose. (4555 views)
Tasted by LoireFan on 5/19/2007 & rated 91 points: This is a very nice wine in need of more ageing. Try again in 4-5 years. (4753 views)
Tasted by MFong on 2/6/2007: Wines of Delas Freres (Raffles Hotel Wine, Food and Arts Experience 2007) (Raffles Hotel, Singapore): From magnum. Olives on the delicate nose. Full bodied with good balance of jammy black fruit and good acidity. Rich and complex. (4534 views)
Tasted by Northern on 1/26/2007 & rated 91 points: Purple colour, typical spicy nose with white pepper mixed with brambles, licorice and aniseed. Good concentration and acidity, surprisingly very smooth with barely perceptable tannins, good length. Felt very open for business, fell apart a bit in the decanter over a couple of hours. The first glass was the best. Maybe not a long ager but drinking well now. (4876 views)
Tasted by Finare Vinare on 12/5/2006 & rated 90 points: At first we get grilled notes, then an almost rediculously precise smell of tar pastilles (danish Ga-Jol brand!), and some chemical hints, like shoe polish. We also find liquorice root, matchsticks and gunpowder. Tarry associations also give way to tobacco and smoked sausage. The round and embedded fruit spans from raspberries and blackberries to plums and figs. As a whole it's something of an olfactory sensation. The palate is almost bone dry (delicious), with slightly dried out fruit, instead we get bassett's liquorice. The mid is somewhat thin, but the length is good and the finish slightly herbal and bitter (sage). The taste is not as good as the nose, but it's delicious before the meal and works really well as a food wine. (5538 views)

U.S. Importer (Addt'l Info)

Since 1996, the firm of Delas Frères has fully retrieved the glory and spirit that made its fame. A highly motivated team is proud to help give a new lease of life to this great Rhône Valley wine merchant firm, founded in 1835. Under the guidance of its current management, numerous investments have been made at the winery at Saint-Jean-de-Muzols, near Tournon-sur-Rhône. A specially designed fermentation hall for the making of red wines, and a thorough rebuilding of the ageing cellar are amongst the key elements of the new quality charter from Delas Frères. This can be summed up in one sentence : place man and wine at the centre of the stage, together with terroir.

2000 Delas Frères Hermitage Marquise de la Tourette

• This wine is a blend from 3 different terroirs : L'Ermite, le Sabot, and the famed plot, Les Bessards.

• The Delas vineyards here add up to 10 hectares/25 acres.

• Average production : 30,000 bottles (75 cl.) per year.

• Grape variety : 100% Syrah.

All grapes of the cuvée "Marquise de la Tourette" are picked by hand, according to appropriate ripening in each terroir. Fermentation takes place in traditional, open-topped concrete tanks, after 2 days pre-fermentary skin contact at cool temperatures. Maceration continues at controlled temperatures of 82°F and 86°F (28° to 30°C). Daily cap pushing down and pumping over are carried out for about 10 days, with a total maceration period up to 20 days. After devatting and pressing, malolactic fermentation is carried out in oak barrels.

Maturation lasts for between 14 and 16 months in oak barrels which have already held wine for between 1 and 3 years. These are regularly topped up. 9% of the total barrels used for maturing are new.

The colour shows brilliant, deep red hues. The nose is powerful and complex, expressing blackberries, smoke, spices, leather and black olives. On the palate, the wine is firm but silky, with a tightly-knit tannic structure that is the hallmark of wines that have a great future.

Red meats, rare or medium cooked - games, marinated meats spicy stews. It is recommended to have the bottle opened for 1 to 3 hours before drinking.

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

• The appellation stretches over 3 communes in the Drôme "département" : Tain-l'Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Larnage.

• The soils are a combination of granite with alluvial quaternary delta deposits, and, on the eastern side, Pliocene clay. This diversity explains the numerous different names given to vineyard plots within the appellation : Bessards, Greffieux, Méal, Roucoule, Beaumes, etc.

• The meso-climate provides shelter from the north winds, where the majority of the slopes is well exposed, facing south.

•The vineyards area adds up to 134 hectares/331 acres, with an annual production of 3,635 hectoliters. Authorized maximum yield is 40 hectoliters/hectare (2.3 US tons/acres).

• Grape varieties : Syrah (an addition of up to 15% of Marsanne or Roussanne is allowed).
