Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 94 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 93 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by slywka7 on 3/26/2022 & rated 96 points: Pop and pour. Aromas of blackberry, currant, black cherry and graphite. Flavors of blackberry, currant, black cherry, balsamic and earth. Ends with a 40-45 second finish with blackberry and currant notes. Palate was better than the nose. (984 views)
Tasted by mclanew on 11/26/2021 & rated 93 points: Decanted for two hours. Similiar notes as previous tasting but this one was more fully decanted and so the oak and tannin was better integrated. This hundred acre cuvee lacks the refinement and purity of some of the others though. (925 views)
Tasted by mclanew on 10/30/2021 & rated 92 points: Popped and poured. Massive wine with concentrated flavors of black cherry, blackberry, mocha, and tobacco. Full bodied, packed with flavors, a bit over oaked, and finishing long this is a bit too young and needs a decant which I didn’t have time to do. Will revisit with another bottle after some more time has passed. (904 views)
Tasted by Jimaronson on 8/12/2021 & rated 99 points: This wine is just perfect. Sweet red and black fruits with cherry, blueberry and leather. Tannins are soft and upon opening the nose was wonderful. Whatever issues anyone said in the past are history. I am incredibly impressed to find all the heat gone and what is left is wonderful. This might be my favorite Hundred Acre wine to date. It is hard to give a wine 99 points. I ask who am I to make such an appraisal? Well, I decided that I could ask for nothing more from the wine so the rating is appropriate. The wine is not a fruit bomb, but subtle and very approachable.

I opened it 1 hour before dinner and did not decant. I would not decant. I believe you could open it at dinner and the wine would be approachable. It was terrific with the sirloin steak with black pepper and mushroom sauce. Others had it with a wonderful chicken dish. (1045 views)
Tasted by vpoms on 9/19/2020 & rated 96 points: One of the best, most satisfying, complex wines I have ever tasted! Deep garnet, powerful nose of prunes, dried cherry, chocolate, leather, smoke. Fully developed wine. Palate: dry, medium plus acidity, medium and very smooth tannins, high alcohol, full body, powerful flavors that are very complex and extremely pleasant and satisfying: licorice, dark chocolate, cured meat, complex cooked dark fruit. Finish is very complex with virtual symphony of flavors that linger on the back of the palate. Outstanding wine! Perfect to drink now or can be aged further. (1562 views)
Tasted by Tridaddy on 2/22/2020 & rated 95 points: Steak house dinner of Ribeye + Brussels + Mushrooms. Wine was amazing opened right up and exceeded high expectations. (1366 views)
Tasted by dkentaustin on 12/8/2019 & rated 95 points: Sweet violet, blackberries with a meaty nose. White chocolate notes, velvety smooth...very pretty and not overly heavy. Balanced with an amazing grace and subtle power. Some nutmeg, anise and a bright mouthfeel. Lovely wine - really impressed. I think this is drinking at its prime. (1448 views)
Tasted by gesusser on 3/9/2018 & rated 94 points: Only had time for a short decant before heading to mortons steakhouse in Boca ...gave this dark red cab some time in the glass ...smooth as glass long lingering finish and it was an excellent last bottle (2454 views)
Tasted by Jimaronson on 1/11/2018 & rated 96 points: Sweet red fruits with wonderful balance. Pop and pour and enjoy. (1276 views)
Tasted by Rollerball on 10/7/2017 & rated 95 points: Achieves surprising excitement for such a big wine. Everything is integrated and in its place, from coffee, to dark fruited with just a hint of a dried or maybe even roasted quality. Coffee, warm spice. (2506 views)
Tasted by jaxpaj on 8/30/2017 & rated 95 points: Much better than my last bottle 5 years ago. Typically Hundred Acre is a drink now wine, Fortunate Son seems to need some time in the bottle. (2419 views)
Tasted by gesusser on 8/18/2017 & rated 94 points: See last Note..needs a long decant..can still wait 3 to 5 years on this well made cab (1881 views)
Tasted by Jimaronson on 6/19/2017 & rated 92 points: Big concentrated wine that needed a minimum of 4 to 5 hours decant. I found chocolate, smoke, liquorish and coffee. A masculine wine with black and blue fruit. We had with lamb and probably would have been better with steak or a spicy dish. If you like soft and feminine wines then this is not presently not your best choice even though the finish was smooth. (1277 views)
Tasted by MAXIMUM SATISFACTION on 4/30/2017 & rated 94 points: Ready to drink as pop and pour with tannins and acidicty fully resolved/integrated. Bright cherry, raspberry liqueur, cassis, tobacco, and minerals. Still fresh with several more years left in prime drinking. (2215 views)
Tasted by 1964vintage on 7/30/2016 & rated 96 points: Killer juice. Outstanding from nose to finish. Several years of life left. (2045 views)
Tasted by gesusser on 5/24/2016 & rated 95 points: One hour decant on 1st nite not nearly enuff...rebottled/sealed and next nite with another one decant, revealed a very different and most excellent cab...huge, smooth tannins, long finish; no rush to open the remaining 2 bottles as this can easily go another 3-5 years (1890 views)
Tasted by DaButtah on 5/15/2015 & rated 94 points: Continues to improve with age. Dark red fruits (cherry & plum) with a hint of vanilla on the nose. Cherry and licorice on the palate with some spice on the back end. Lasts for a good 30 seconds. Love this. (3095 views)
Tasted by WestJohnson on 3/29/2015 & rated 93 points: This is a style of wine that you either like or you do not. As my wine drinking ark expands, I'm finding my tolerance for over extracted, big wines is going down. That said, I really like this wine. Loads of vanillan oak (in a good way), nice acidity and a cigar box finish. Drink now through 2020. (3010 views)
Tasted by sjdcellar on 2/11/2015 & rated 95 points: i try not to give too many 95 and higher ratings but this is well deserved. So concentrated, velvety tannins, some oaky vanilla with plum sauce and dark cherries. Drinking very well this has lots of life left. (2789 views)
Tasted by NarlingerWines on 11/7/2014: Dark berry, bit of coffee, licorice, smooth, and ready to drink (1344 views)
Tasted by ipp on 8/3/2014 & rated 93 points: I liked it better than the last time I had it. Really dark, deep color. Very good balance with sweet tannins and notes of coffee and dried plums. (3003 views)
Tasted by GGinSF on 12/25/2013 & rated 90 points: Silky, big wine. Very fruit-forward California cab. Not as complex as I would have thought, but otherwise a textbook modern Napa wine. (3757 views)
Tasted by ipp on 8/20/2013 & rated 92 points: good cabernet, though not nearly as profound as the Hundred Acres Cab. Nose of smoke, leather and graphite. Good tannic structure. Not as fruit forward or complex as the HA Cab ... but very good. Long, but somewhat aggressive finish/ (3814 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 6/4/2013 & rated 90 points: Massive, intense, mouth filling, packed with jammy black and blue fruits, coffee bean, licorice, smoke and vanilla. This is clearly a well made wine. But it's equally clear liking this wine a lot, is a matter of style. It was too hot, alcoholic, jammy and oaky for my taste. I liked the first sip, perhaps the second sip, but was tired of tasting it after that point and looked for something else to drink. (2439 views)
Tasted by daniel.jay on 5/13/2013 & rated 95 points: Huge fruit, lush, velvety, well balanced, med tannins. Delicious. (4244 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
