Tasted by N.Bonaparte on 4/23/2024 & rated 93 points: Purchased a couple of these in 2012 and stored properly since. This needs a solid hour decant. Big inky grip up front that leads into a somewhat tame full bodied wine. Mostly resolved tannins. Nice finish, balance and fruit. I suspect this is in its prime but should drink well for at least 5 years. Revisit 2028 (96 views)
Tasted by Kozakofthewest on 9/18/2022 & rated 93 points: Excellent wine gets to the right spot with 1.5h decant. (872 views)
Tasted by soyhead on 3/4/2022: Opened with air, fruit punchy and smooth, pleasing and resolved. Not a monster rather a restrained suave drink. Drink now. (1173 views)
Tasted by S_Gillett on 8/30/2020 & rated 92 points: Frustratingly Fantastic.
Opened after reading reviews here on CellarTracker, and I was led astray! Juicy, with a ton of acidity left and medium tannin. Could go another few years at least. Just barely into tertiary characteristics. They were prevalent on the nose, but the mouthfeel was quite youthful. If I had another, I wouldn't open until at least 2022+ (1784 views)
Tasted by bmartz1 on 4/24/2020 & rated 92 points: Polished, decadent tannins. Gentle acidity. Sumptuous. Balanced fruit, oak, spice and earth. Finishes with subtlety if not slightly short but not insultingly so. Drinking well. Feel free to pop. (1764 views)
Tasted by BRogo on 7/27/2019 & rated 95 points: Fantastic stuff. Bramble, cocoa, black raspberry, ripe blackberry, rose, lavender, Great structure, well rounded. (2075 views)
Tasted by slapsht007 on 9/22/2018 & rated 91 points: Almost black color changing to deep Garnett on the rims. Dried cherries, strawberry jam, fig, and black pepper taste. Tannins are still there but integrating into the wine. Not too much acidity coming through. Just right to stand up to food but very drinkable on its own. Much more life in this big bad cab but drinking yummy now. (2394 views)
Tasted by odyssey11 on 8/23/2018 & rated 92 points: Fully integrated tannins. Nice round mouthfeel with good fruit and enough acidity to keep things lively. Quite good, but not phenomenal. Near or at its peak.

Did not improve on the second day. Drink now. (2139 views)
Tasted by PMJak11 on 5/31/2018 & rated 93 points: Magnum! My last dinner @ Silverspoon with friends before London! (2122 views)
Tasted by jaxpaj on 12/26/2017 & rated 95 points: 8 hour slow ox and it was worth the effort! The wine was the best '08 I have tasted this year. The fruit is still present and the tannins have settled. Drink up this wine has reached it's prime. (2558 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 12/10/2016 & rated 94 points: A private tasting (Restaurant De Ertepeller, Papendrecht. NL): Tasted blind. Deeper and spicier on the nose than the Rubicon 2011 which preceded it, black cherries and flowers, lifted and rich, toasty; on the palate the structure seems deceptively light, dancing and elegant for a wine with 13.8% ABV , thyme, hint of vanilla, rounded tannins, flavoursome and elegant, very long finish. A wine of real elegance, drinking well already but should reach its apogee around 2020. (4012 views)
Tasted by sequoiagrove on 8/10/2016 & rated 93 points: dense, chocolate, cedar, dark fruits. Reminds me of wines like Magrez Tivoli and La tour Carnet, except its double the price. (2898 views)
Tasted by Winosseur on 11/1/2015: Smooth, extremely well balanced with some baking spice notes. Can't wait to drink the other one in five years. (3463 views)
Tasted by Tiger1028 on 8/20/2015: This wine is drinking very well now. Opens up over the course of 2-3 hours. (3275 views)
Tasted by ToniTony on 2/21/2015 & rated 90 points: Very smooth and well-structured; wonderful wine! (3328 views)
Tasted by mraabpfg on 12/20/2014 & rated 92 points: Nice hints of oak and leather (2534 views)
Tasted by As-Is on 7/19/2013 & rated 92 points: Perfection. Paired with prime rib. Smooth and well balanced. (4092 views)
Tasted by The_Grey_Fox on 6/30/2013 & rated 94 points: Consistently excellent, my favorite of their lineup. (3071 views)
Tasted by JayPKay on 3/2/2013 & rated 91 points: Consistently remarkable. (3563 views)
Tasted by dke on 2/26/2012: (at the winery) Silky mouthfeel with dark fruits. Tasty but hints of sweetness. Too young, feels like ~92pts. (4013 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 2/23/2012 & rated 92 points: 2012 Wine Writers Symposium Fellowship Dinner (Meadowood, St. Helena, California): Opaque purple red violet color; appealing, roasted berry, tart black fruit, sage nose; tart black fruit, tart berry palate with plush tannins; needs 2-3 years; medium-plus finish (2656 views)
Tasted by Lee Fining on 1/29/2012 & rated 90 points: Smooth tannins. Solid presence of fruit. (4442 views)
Tasted by lumpyelbow on 10/7/2011: Napa 2011; 10/6/2011-10/9/2011 (Napa Valley, California): More juice and dark berry than FAY. Still restrained. A little medicine. Good purity with a little exoticness. Young and hugh potential. (4335 views)

Stag's Leap Wine Cellars

Producer website
NOTE: This is easily confused with Stags' Leap Winery, but Stag's Leap Wine Cellars is a different winery. Stag's Leap Wine Cellars is considered one of Napa Valley's first-growths. "We were founded by Warren Winiarski and his family in 1970 and are best known for our estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignons — CASK 23, S.L.V., and FAY. Over the years, our wines have become some of the most highly regarded and collected wines worldwide. They are fashioned to express classic elegance, structure, and ageability, and to reflect the place in which they are grown." Stag's Leap Wine Cellars was known only in the Napa Valley until the now-famous 1976 Paris Tasting, when Winiarski's 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon, the first wine produced at the new winery, bested four top-ranked Bordeaux entries, including first-growths Château Mouton-Rothschild and Château Haut-Brion. The tasting landed Stag's Leap Wine Cellars squarely among the ranks of the world's most noteworthy Cabernet producers and placed Winiarski among the ranks of world's most respected winemakers. It also fundamentally transformed how Californian wines were viewed worldwide [StagsLeap See details here].

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
