Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.5 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 61 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Cromulent on 4/21/2022 & rated 93 points: This bottle was still youthful. Red to the rim, black fruits but as others have noted not overly interesting. Possibly opened about 5-10 years too soon. (1065 views)
Tasted by Gatekeeper on 12/24/2020: ! (1453 views)
Tasted by carlsport on 7/16/2018 & rated 90 points: Fruit is in decline, but still a solid wine. Would drink sooner than later. (3344 views)
Tasted by distilled on 3/31/2018 & rated 90 points: Drank over the course of the night. Overall, was a pleasant glass to drink but frankly fairly boring. Not complex or unique. A smooth nice tasting cab. Not as impressive as what I was hoping for from a 2007 Stags Leap. (3284 views)
Tasted by btandy on 12/26/2017 & rated 88 points: Not bad, just ho hum. Had with prime rib and it was without any noticible character. Have had this wine in the collection since 2009 anticipating 10-year old greatness. disappointing. (3849 views)
Tasted by dankrems on 12/9/2017 & rated 92 points: 2.5 hour decant. Cedar, Black cherry, tobacco, dust, spice. Wonderful. (3092 views)
Tasted by amitamj on 12/8/2017 & rated 93 points: Sat in decanter for an hour. Cedar on the nose, with a hint of cigars. Licorice, dates, hint of blackberry at first, rich and bold with a dry finish. Great bottle. (2562 views)
Tasted by carlsport on 12/1/2017 & rated 91 points: Solid cab. 1 hour decant. A fair amount of dirt, but well integrated tannins still allow the fruit through. Really nice with a ribeye! (1418 views)
Tasted by jemccray64 on 10/15/2017 & rated 94 points: Drinking perfectly right now. Japanese plum, black currant, amid, cinnamon, and caramel. Delicious! (1575 views)
Tasted by fredshouse on 9/9/2017 & rated 93 points: This ten year old SLV is drinking really well. Deep inky purple in the glass, with an aromatic nose of black fruit. Rich taste of blackberry, black currant and dark chocolate, well-structured with rounded tannins. Medium-long finish. Definitely has many more years of aging potential, but excellent right now. (1468 views)
Tasted by fredshouse on 11/6/2016 & rated 94 points: Deep purple in the glass to ruby at the edge, no bricking. Strongly perfumed nose of red and black fruits, leather, dark chocolate and cinnamon. Rich tastes of blackberry, cassis, green pepper and cedar with a sweet undercurrent reminiscent of tawny port. Tannins are rounded but still plenty of structure in this wine. Long, mellow finish. Overall delightful. (2301 views)
Tasted by Keeping It Real on 11/3/2016 & rated 89 points: I'm not sure if it was due to poor storage or what but this wine did not perform as I wished. The wine was purchased at auction with the note "Removed from protected passive storage in a temperature controlled home.." Another way of saying that is "Left on top of a wood shelf in a house with occasional A/C." C'mon dawg, we ain't stupid.

Anyway, the wine was a lot thinner than I would have liked, especially coming from the SLV label. This is not the first time I've been let down by Stag's Leap Wine Cellars. I tried a 2012 Artemis not too long ago which was also very thin. Don't get me wrong, this is not a bad wine, but $120 for this bottle? You and your whole family must have to be kidding me. Hm... I just might have to say latez to this winery. (2413 views)
Tasted by walkerjfw on 9/25/2016 & rated 94 points: After the OCNJ half-marathon, treating ourselves to some steaks post race. Decanted for about 90 minutes, drank over an hour.

From prior notes; "Medium purple color. Nose of blackberry, coffee, herbs - lower intensity. Palate is dark fruits, blackberry, licorice, faint vanilla. Great texture, smooth and elegant. Old world in style...soft and integrated palate..."

This wine is in a really good spot right now. The characteristics that made SLV famous really shining through. From memory, picked up more BDX notes in this bottle - graphite/lead, floral, violet. Elegant finish. Perfect paring with the steaks. Should be at it's best over the next 5 years, hard to tell if it will improve (2543 views)
Tasted by Tiger1028 on 3/12/2016 & rated 93 points: This wine is drinking really nicely now. Enjoying it much more than when we first purchased it. (2648 views)
Tasted by walkerjfw on 12/5/2014 & rated 93 points: Splash decanted, drank over 2 hours. Purchased from the vineyard a few years back...first bottle

Medium purple color. Nose of blackberry, coffee, herbs - lower intensity. Palate is dark fruits, blackberry, licorice, faint vanilla. Great texture, smooth and elegant. Old world in style...soft and integrated palate. Better than expected. (3946 views)
Tasted by slapsht007 on 9/1/2014 & rated 92 points: Very nice drink. Well balanced. Good acidity which stood up to the rack of lamb I prepared. Taste of licorice and dried red fruits which faded to hints of vanilla in the finish. (3147 views)
Tasted by Sixchips600 on 5/31/2014 & rated 94 points: This was fantastic tonight. Perfect nose of cocoa, blackberry, espresso, brambles, herbs. Very complex nose, integrated and elegant. Silky texture on palate with flavors to match the complex aromas. Texture and energy reminds me of a grand cru burgundy. Not for lovers of big cabs, but great for fans of burgundy and Bordeaux. (3401 views)
Tasted by slapsht007 on 5/10/2014 & rated 92 points: Excellent Cab. Black cherries, some currants, and hint of anise. Some hints of earthiness and minerality. Fantastic finish. (3258 views)
Tasted by damo2576 on 3/7/2014: Note: Not rated as part of a enomatic tasting where many wines tasted odd - unsure on storage
Dark purple. Low intensity nose, some oak. Medium acidity, dark fruit, medium tannins could integrate more. Uninteresting. (3138 views)
Tasted by JDV.DDSPHD on 11/9/2013 & rated 87 points: I was actually rather disappointed with this. There was tons of oak on the nose and on the palate. I made the comment that I would need to pull some splinters out of my nose after the initial sniffy sniff. More brightness and red fruit mixed in with the blackberry, blackcherry and fig. I wasn't a fan of the acidity here and honestly just disappointed. Not a terrible wine but not a great one. Linear and uninteresting. Finish was lacking as well. (2179 views)
Tasted by Vervelb on 3/26/2013 & rated 91 points: Beautiful purple red, nice fruit, black plum and currant, with tobacco and spice filling it out. Lovely, smooth finish. Elegant 100% cab (2762 views)
Tasted by Krakajack on 12/22/2012 & rated 93 points: One word. Fantastic. Smooth initial textures led to clean finish with a hint of cherry pie. Despite the price point (wish I stocked up on these years ago) I'd purchase again. Drank with Kristen and Pete at Rebecca's (2962 views)
Tasted by vinceo on 10/20/2012 & rated 94 points: With Dave and Laura at Gibsons. Dense and delicious. Purple. (3405 views)
Tasted by Jmilton on 3/5/2012 & rated 93 points: Great red, full (3730 views)
Tasted by Mike Mann on 2/17/2012 & rated 91 points: Had this with italian, full bodied, dark and rich in flavor, hint of vanilla very well balanced (3840 views)

Stag's Leap Wine Cellars

Producer website
NOTE: This is easily confused with Stags' Leap Winery, but Stag's Leap Wine Cellars is a different winery. Stag's Leap Wine Cellars is considered one of Napa Valley's first-growths. "We were founded by Warren Winiarski and his family in 1970 and are best known for our estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignons — CASK 23, S.L.V., and FAY. Over the years, our wines have become some of the most highly regarded and collected wines worldwide. They are fashioned to express classic elegance, structure, and ageability, and to reflect the place in which they are grown." Stag's Leap Wine Cellars was known only in the Napa Valley until the now-famous 1976 Paris Tasting, when Winiarski's 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon, the first wine produced at the new winery, bested four top-ranked Bordeaux entries, including first-growths Château Mouton-Rothschild and Château Haut-Brion. The tasting landed Stag's Leap Wine Cellars squarely among the ranks of the world's most noteworthy Cabernet producers and placed Winiarski among the ranks of world's most respected winemakers. It also fundamentally transformed how Californian wines were viewed worldwide [StagsLeap See details here].

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
