Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes

Tasted by NYC_Maenad on 12/29/2018: Quite similar note to the bottle from 2017, and much better than the one we had when various board members visited. Soft and honeyed, with beautiful perfume and a great deal of subtle complexity. A slow sipping wine, not powerful, but insightful. So interesting how these age! While I do miss the youthful perfume, I quite enjoy where they go with time, and am happy to have a few more in the cellar. (997 views)
Tasted by NYC_Maenad on 6/5/2017: We bought this wine nearly two years ago and, with one thing and another, have not tasted until now. There's always a risk with old condrieu - a 1995 of this wine out of 375 at Les Crayeres in February was terribly oxidized - so we had a back up ready to go. The wine poured beautifully, showing a clear, dark straw color, perfect for its age. The nose was glorious from the get go, with honey, spices and white flowers and an almost savory character that was fascinating, as I usually associate meaty notes in white with off bottles. This one was spot-on, still vibrant despite clear maturity. The palate needed more time to evolve, maybe an hour during which it was a little disjointed. Never unpleasant, it just wasn't fully together and on stride for a while. It also was out of step with the nose for that period. When the two came together, though, the wine just sang, with those exotic elements fleshing out a core of acidity and keeping everything in harmony. Deep and mysterious, with a progress of flavors in the mouth with each sip. I can't say for sure this would be to everyone's taste, as it had a bitter waxy element that we found complementary, but which some might find off-putting. If it weren't for the fact that it had zero discernible RS, I might have called this chenin if it had been served to me blind - who thinks of aged vigonier? We drank most of the bottle with dinner, and it paired beautifully with most of the meal, especially a seared salmon over corn and very sweet tiny heirloom tomatoes. Finished the rest at home. By the 3rd hour open, it was getting a bit tired and a touch dried, so we'll make sure and drink the next one between hours 1 and 2. A really impressive and emotional wine. (1312 views)
Tasted by don_quichotte on 12/25/2011: Interesting though not spectacular. This has taken a pretty raisin-y sort of character with time and is now not entirely dissimilar to a decent riesling spatlese. Not the easiest thing to match with food. I missed a bit of complexity and/or acidity to make this special. (2104 views)
Tasted by SGS on 11/22/2008: Very nice, melon, honey, bit of acidity. Dense mouth feel (1980 views)

A pioneer in the renewal of the Condrieu appellation, Domaine Georges Vernay has always made wines of unique style, notable for their finesse, elegance and harmony. Three generations have left the mark of the philosophy on the estate, while perpetuating its traditions in the greatest respect for both vines and winegrowers.

Domaine Georges Vernay lies among steep slopes of the northern Rhône Valley. The property has become a major emblem of Rhône Valley winegrowing, from the time when Georges Vernay saved the Condrieu appellation to the international awards earned by Christine Vernay’s Côte-Rôtie.

At Domaine Georges Vernay, the respect for Nature is apparent in the deep understanding of the past and the full knowledge of the traditional techniques used; the writings of many generations are essential in both the vineyard and the winery. Similarly, while striving to constantly improve quality, the grapes are treated using methods that respect both flora and fauna. The incredibly steep vineyards make mechanisation impossible, so the vines are maintained by hand and without use of residual weed killers or insecticides. In the cellar, winemaking is a constant quest for perfection; every year the working methods are reviewed, and every year, for three generations, the estate strives to define each vintage as finely as possible. Ahead of its time and a defender of northern Rhône Valley values, Domaine Georges Vernay has the advantage of a unique microclimate and exceptional soils.

The estate counts 8 hectares of land in the Condrieu appellation, 2.5 hectares in the Côte-Rôtie appellation, and 1.5 hectares in the Saint-Joseph appellation. Wines are made from two grape varieties: Viognier and Syrah.

The quality of Domaine Georges Vernay’s soils and the special climate of the region release the legendary aromatic finesse of these two great grape varieties.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.
