Community Tasting Notes (average 91.7 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 91 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by IvanKrazy on 12/8/2023 & rated 92 points: Wow, this is drinking phenomenally right now. Beautiful color, a bit muted nose initially but after a while it starts to shine. (416 views)
Tasted by Periko on 11/11/2023 & rated 88 points: Very little evolution, just the brink, as this is still very opaque. Expressive, mature, ripe, cherry liquor, some brett or aromatic herbs, cherry coke and overall plenty of ripe fruit. Mid to full bodied, still to resolve some tannins. 15 avg alcohol, but not really hot, drink without food at your own risk. (403 views)
Tasted by Intellectual Sasquatch on 9/1/2023 & rated 86 points: One hour decant. Barely drinkable. Doesn't seem technically flawed but has a very unpleasant finish. Tried again on Day 2, with worse results. (564 views)
Tasted by FrancoisC on 6/5/2023 & rated 90 points: C'est pas prêt. (729 views)
Tasted by maxmanx on 3/13/2023: Really good on PnP. No need to wait! (900 views)
Tasted by jreynolds3 on 10/29/2022 & rated 92 points: Initially started a little closed, but opened up after a few hours and very solid still. (875 views)
Tasted by dlowrey99 on 5/8/2022 & rated 88 points: PnP; lots of dark brooding fruit, pepper, and some brush, but not as complex as i had hoped. Wish we had time to decant before enjoying over dinner. (1309 views)
Tasted by maxmanx on 9/10/2021: Decanted and drank over several hours. Lots of garrigue, which I enjoyed, but the fruit came out after a few hours. Plenty of life left. (1845 views)
Tasted by maderay on 7/9/2021 & rated 89 points: Pruney (1718 views)
Tasted by Intellectual Sasquatch on 7/3/2021 & rated 88 points: 1 & 1/2 hour decant. Vibrant nose of rich, dark fruit. Nice up front, but has a harsh aftertaste. Seemed to soften at the end, but I’m thinking this wine has come to an untimely end. One left - I’ll decant it for about 4 hours to see if there’s any improvement. (1604 views)
Tasted by Night Train on 6/25/2021 & rated 89 points: This was OK. Well balanced and holding up really well. However, it was missing vibrancy and anything that might indicate what it is and where it's from. It was frankly a little flat. A decent wine with no obvious flaws, but nothing to save for a special occasion. (1519 views)
Tasted by olalar on 4/18/2021 & rated 87 points: Same impression as last time. Raisins and a bit overdone. Worked well with lamb burgers and slightly cold 12- 14 degrees C. (1474 views)
Tasted by winemaker on 3/22/2021 & rated 91 points: Big wine. Plenty of provencal herbs and garrigue. Red fruits. A hint of heat on the finish. Needs to be had with hearty fare. 15% abv. (1204 views)
Tasted by JimmyFizz on 10/18/2020: Big heavy wine with a twang in the after taste - not for me but my friend who likes Malbec & alcoholic reds loved it! (1408 views)
Tasted by peeno on 9/7/2020 & rated 91 points: As before with lavender cherry perfume. (1380 views)
Tasted by up4wine on 6/20/2020 & rated 91 points: Part of the "Tour of French Wines" tasting. An excellent wine, but probably my least favorite of the 4. (1714 views)
(1623 views)
Tasted by peeno on 4/25/2020 & rated 91 points: Aroma of raspberry liquor. Heat upon opening. May show more complexity tomorrow. (1588 views)
Tasted by Mtpisgah on 1/20/2020: Consumed over three nights. I had a glass Friday and found it to be too big and hot for me. Had a sip on Sunday and it was unchanged. My wife enjoyed it. (1452 views)
Tasted by EMTAME on 4/24/2019 & rated 92 points: I have really moved away from drinking CDP; in fact, this is the first bottle I’ve had in 2+ years, as so many have become outsized and overripe. However, this wine was excellent. It’s right at the point in its maturity where I tend to enjoy them - still showing juicy red fruit and some garrigue notes, but the tannins have smoothed out and there’s not a ton of tertiary development yet. This is a cleanly made wine - which, in my experience, is sadly not a given with CDPs. I wish I had a couple more. (2140 views)
Tasted by Night Train on 10/27/2018 & rated 90 points: Consumed at the end of a wine-soaked party, so no coherent notes. PnP. Youthful and rich. Not obviously a CdP - no minerals, garrigue, etc. Plenty of structure, but very well balanced. A keeper. (2351 views)
Tasted by DougSamuel on 3/31/2018 & rated 93 points: Very dark wine. Hardly any red highlights considering its age. Nose and flavor are shockingly young in profile. Tasted blind, some of our group guessed petite sirah and I can see it. Dark chocolate and raspberry or cherry. Roasted notes. Chalky tannins linger. Definitely a long way to go for this wine. (3101 views)
Tasted by jeffjohnsonjj@hotmail.com on 12/21/2017 & rated 91 points: Classic but not the most generous CdP. Not sure if this will open with more time, or the structure will win over the fruit. I have two more bottles to find out.... (3115 views)
Tasted by olalar on 11/18/2017 & rated 88 points: There is certainly a lot of everything here including some raisin tones. What is lacking is balance as the wine suffers from low acidity. This leaves one with a heavy feeling and the last glass was not the best. I hope my other bottles will be better but it seems unlikely. (2869 views)
Tasted by MJHarrington on 4/24/2017: Based on earlier reviews this may just now be coming into form. Lots of cherry, licorice and fig. Certainly this is a bold CnDP and another 5 years may tame it further. But this is a terrific drop for the patient. (3346 views)

Domaine Giraud
Owned by François and Marie Giraud the 19 hectare Domaine Giraud is now rated among the best producers in Chateauneuf du Pape. François is responsible for the vineyards and Marie for the vinification and together with Philippe Cambié, one of the Rhone's most exceptional consultant wine makers, they have come up with a string of excellent vintages. The 19 hectares are split between an 8 hectare plot in the 'Gallimardes' area in the south, which includes parcels of hundred-year old Grenache, and further sites in the Crau, the sandy soils near Chateau Rayas on the Pignan plateau, and the white rocky soils of the highest points of the appellation, and these too include vines over a hundred years old.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
