Community Tasting Notes (average 89.3 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 7 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Atwellian on 9/12/2015 & rated 87 points: Noticeably brownish dark red, suspended solids appearance. Some oxidation on nose. Funk, leather, tar, forest floor. Full, deep plum, somewhat "stewed", over-plummy. Ei: "this smells like bacon!". I would say this is on the downhill slide,, still pleasant but fruit has a somewhat oxidized and cooked element.  Tasted by scott davis on 11/23/2010 & rated 88 points: Light crimson with a twinge of brown on the rim. Ripe black raspberry, fig, and liqueur aromas give way to a palate of raspberry and kirsch, mixed with a suggestion of mineral, talc, and earth. Medium bodied, with a clean finish. (2851 views)
Tasted by PSUSteve on 10/29/2009 & rated 90 points: Nice bottle of wine. Good fruit especially the cherries. (2898 views)
Tasted by theplatz on 8/8/2009 & rated 90 points: Did not see any browning as mentioned in previous tasting. Did decant as initial tasting suggested still very tannic meaning it can continue to be aged. Ruby red color (lighter than a 2007 Cotes du Rhone we poured side by side). Better than the CdR. Dark cherry and blackberry fruit. Very even, solid, wine; nothing overpowering or particularly delicious but overall a very good wine. We will look forward to our second and last bottle again in a year or two ! (2877 views)
Tasted by enosnob on 11/2/2008 & rated 93 points: 10/22/08: Dark purple, with a great nose of rose, tar, anise, and blackberry. This is a beautifully constructed wine with great structure and balance, and layers of flavors of chocolate, earth, blackberry, pepper, and kirsch. The finish is very long with blackberry and lush creme brulee. Super good. (3021 views)
Tasted by wineywhites on 9/13/2008 & rated 87 points: Nose of raisins and black cherries. Starting to oxidize - brown around the edges. Delicious taste of dried cherries. Nice wine, particularly for the price. Drink now. (1760 views)
Tasted by Bob Fyke on 5/6/2008 & rated 90 points: Pretty, crystal ruby red color, with no signs of purple or density. Settles down quickly after opening. Raspberry, cherry and and twigs on the nose. Nice full body without being too much. Palate of asian spice, chocolate, raspberry and a little cherry cough syrup (in a nice way). After about an hour, began to show a subtle, and pleasant menthol note on the nose. Almost elegant. Really, a very nice surprise for the money. (1220 views)

Domaine Giraud
Owned by François and Marie Giraud the 19 hectare Domaine Giraud is now rated among the best producers in Chateauneuf du Pape. François is responsible for the vineyards and Marie for the vinification and together with Philippe Cambié, one of the Rhone's most exceptional consultant wine makers, they have come up with a string of excellent vintages. The 19 hectares are split between an 8 hectare plot in the 'Gallimardes' area in the south, which includes parcels of hundred-year old Grenache, and further sites in the Crau, the sandy soils near Chateau Rayas on the Pignan plateau, and the white rocky soils of the highest points of the appellation, and these too include vines over a hundred years old.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
