Tasted by Sean Tay on 2/18/2024 & rated 94 points: Pronounced nose intensity with notes of red fruits, cranberry, strawberry, spices. Medium+ acidity and medium tannin. Will improve with ageing. (576 views)
Tasted by Goodwine4ever on 11/6/2023 & rated 95 points: En Magnum
(1111 views)
Tasted by Cote d'Or on 6/17/2023: Tasted over 3 hrs
-nearly semi-translucent med red mild bricking
-moderately expressive warm earth spice sweet berry
-med/med+ acidity, med/med- weight tangy earthy fading berry fruit with some notes of early maturity bit of oak remnant on the long-ish finish, med tannins
-drinking very well in early maturity (1355 views)
Tasted by rralls on 5/12/2023 & rated 93 points: Quite nice for being a 2011. (1478 views)
Tasted by Argrath on 4/15/2023 & rated 93 points: Medium-fullish nose, a bit metallic. Flowers, green bell pepper and spice. Red fruit. Elegant and perfumed, but perhaps a bit weak for a GC.
Medium body. Stalky palate. Red fruit and cedar. Some lovely spice. Elegant, but a bit weak impression. Slightly green and thin mid-palate.
Clearly a second-rate GC, and not on the same level as the 2015 GC's tasted at the same occasion. (1284 views)
Tasted by chbeaumont on 10/20/2022 & rated 93 points: Retains good colour; nose pinched & stalky, rather anonymous; effortless, glorious palate, classic peacock tail; lingering finish. Time in hand. (2021 views)
Tasted by Sean Tay on 9/29/2022 & rated 94 points: Pronounced nose intensity with notes of strawberry, ripe red fruits, spices, toast. Medium+ acidity and medium tannin. Tannin is smooth and round. (1578 views)
Tasted by Sotto325 on 3/26/2022 flawed bottle: Corked: no odor, just dried out (2002 views)
Tasted by kingkanu on 2/5/2022: Early check in. Medium light body, bright red fruits, floral, some stems, elegant, some intensity, good acidity. 5 or more years until prime time but perfectly drinkable now (2072 views)
Tasted by on.cloudwine on 5/15/2021 & rated 92 points: May not have had a representative bottle as the cork was crumbly and the wine showed signs of bricking and tertiary elements than I would expect more from a 20 year old bottle than a 10 year old one. Had to be filtered into a decanter.

Still the wine showed fairly well and was soft and elegant, with red fruits intertwined with some savoury/saline mineral notes. A pretty wine that perhaps foretells the trajectory of a more well kept bottle? 92-93 for me (2743 views)
(2699 views)
Tasted by lembkes on 11/28/2020 & rated 89 points: medelstor lätt fruktig doft med hallon å skogsgolv.
Tasted by kevinskabo@gmail.com on 10/19/2020: Drakk i Sandefjord under «tasting». Nydelig vin. Drikkeklar nå. (2608 views)
Tasted by grapenomad on 9/22/2020 & rated 90 points: Popped and decanted for over 5 hours. Opened up nicely, but definitely could’ve benefited from more. Lot of solid complexity on the nose - red berry fruit, rosemary, freshly picked figs, mushrooms and hints of wet forest floor. Palate is quite lean, acid is still sharp and tannins are unripe. Even though you CAN drink this now, ideally give it 1-2 years more to develop in the bottle. The only con that I detect here is that this lacks that depth that a lot of MSDs possess. Could be the vintage, could be something else. I was seeking it throughout the whole drinking experience, but the major “oomph” just didn’t come. Enjoyable nonetheless, but I’m unsure if I’d come back to this at this price point. (2922 views)
Tasted by lembkes on 9/13/2020 & rated 93 points: medelstor fatig mogen doft med fuktig blöt höstskog å mogna söta körsbär. (2172 views)
Tasted by Cote d'Or on 8/20/2020: Tasted over 4 hrs
-nearly semi-translucent med red no bricking
-lovely aromatic spicy sweet red fruit
-med/med+ acidity gives the perfect lift, med/med- weight yet highly concentrated sappy dark red fruit with some stemmy spice faint herbal, med tannins on long finish with bit of sweet oak residue
-quite lovely now, this is almost there, a couple more years will see this really singing with a little more development and integration of the oak (2104 views)
Tasted by Aravind Asok on 1/1/2020: Based on the other notes, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect, but this bottle showed fantastically. Popped and only slow-ox for about an hour; followed over an hour. On the nose, pure Lambrays perfume that is still very primary: wild strawberry, spice, perfectly integrated oak, nothing wild or funky, but just amazing pure PN aromatics, which I was happy to just smell. On the palate, fantastic acidity, more wild strawberry and spice. On the finish, so refined and elegant tannic structure. A fantastic wine; drinking well now (like so many 11s). (2538 views)
Tasted by fatboi on 12/18/2019: another 11 that outperformed what I've read about it. Light but with a deep nose of cherries/berries... a delicious fun nose and palate. nice weight and complexity. 92/93 (2422 views)

93-94 (2661 views)
Tasted by hprphf on 5/15/2019 & rated 93 points: Acker 2019/05 (Zuma): Vintage freeness resolved by deep mellow fruit. Meaty and good weight. 93 (2562 views)
Tasted by JOsgood on 3/10/2019: A touch thin but very pretty and enjoyable nonetheless. Seems to have suffered from the 2011 vintage. (2690 views)
Tasted by the godfather on 3/8/2019: A bit thin for a grand cru but nice wine nonetheless (2197 views)
Tasted by Nigel Bruce on 8/29/2018 & rated 93 points: I'd sent a non-wine geek friend a 6-pack of this, and he'd hung onto his last bottle to share with me as he'd thought so highly of it. I'd held off cracking any of the 2011 in light of the many lukewarm reviews here.
Popped and poured last night, and the wine was beautiful - fresh, bright, light and crunchy, just succulent but with no cloying at all - and no 'green meanies' that I could detect. I plan to crack a couple more with some burgophile friends to get their views, but I am delighted that I have a healthy stash of this particular vintage. (3024 views)

Domaine des Lambrays

Producer website

The Clos des Lambrays produced legendary wines in the 40’s. After its purchase in ’79 (elevation to Grand Cru status In 1981), the new owners, Saiers, did some replanting, but it was only about one-third of the vines, not the general replanting that some journalists have stated. Fully two-thirds on the vines are old, most in excess of 60 years. What did happen in the late ‘80’s is that Saiers apparently chose to allow yields to increase, but they suffered the consequences of that approach in quality and they were forced to sell the domaine. While it was for sale, the court turned over all phases of growing and winemaking to the regisseur, Thierry Brouin. Under his impeccable guidance the transformation in quality has been sensational. The new owners, Freund, have retained Thierry. The ’96 is deep, (yields of 28 hl/ha.) very (for want of a better word) masculine, wine. It is not easy now, but shows enormous potential, and the tannins are quite round and integrated. The 1997 is a marvel of seductive perfume and richness. In 1998 the Clos des Lambrays produced one of the great wines of the Cote D’Or, rated 91 to 94 points potential by Steven Tanzer in the International Wine Cellar. The 1999 looks to be every bit as promising with the delightful deep rich color and flavors that typify this vintage in the best domaines of Burgundy. In the words of Michel Bettane, the Clos des Lambrays is an extraordinary terroir, capable of giving wines that, in generosity of savour and length rival the greatest. It is, as Brouin pointed out to me, and shows on the palate, the most "Morey" of all the Grand Crus of that appellation—the terroir really comes through. In the vinification, too, Brouin captures this—a long fermentation, no de-stemming, and 50% new allier oak. The wines are unfined, only the last sixth of each barrel is then lightly filtered (the rest are unfiltered), and starting with ’94 our selection, completely unfined and unfiltered. In 1998, only about 65% of the production of the Clos des Lambrays went into the cuvee of Clos Grand Cru, the rest was sold as Morey Premier Cru—also a fantastic wine – evidencing the domaine’s commitment to utmost quality. “The domaine has just changed owners but Thierry Brouin, the energetic director of the property stays on. The Clos des Lambrays is one of the best exposed and most individualized terroir of the Cotes de Nuits, capable of making wines with the power of Chambertin but with even more mellowness. In the complex bouquet developed with age by the wine, one easily recognizes an astonishing smoky note... The next vintages should surpass even the excellent 1990 and 1995, indeed the selection process for the great wine will be even more severe. The domaine also produces a marvelous Puligny- Montrachet, Les Caillerets, in a style a little more oaked than that of Hubert de Montille.” - Le Classement, 1999 Revue du Vin de France

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
