Community Tasting Notes (average 90.1 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 165 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by SpenceP on 7/7/2022 & rated 94 points: Preserved lemons, yeast, faint watermelon, cooked cucumber, salty minerals, nuts, delicate flowers, distinct acidity, long rich aftertaste ending on a note of caramel, followed by a more ethereal ghost of an aftertaste that goes on even longer. Lovely. I don't have enough experience with this wine to predict how much longer it will last, but it's wonderful right now. (603 views)
Tasted by Viking 61 on 5/11/2020 & rated 94 points: Wow. what a QPR. Deep honey color and was fantastic with mussels in a white wine sauce. Drink now. (1441 views)
Tasted by unrelenting on 5/5/2020 & rated 95 points: In my 20 years of wine, I have yet to find a better value. $18 for a wine that had evolved over 9 years, wow! It's now highly oxidized but, likely because of the high acidity, it's still quite fresh and has at least a year of peak drinking left. The complexity is massive and the finish is respectable (hits the front palate modestly).
The oxidized palate is not for the neophyte but, for those that like aged white Burg, please add this to your collection and thank me in 10 years.
This was my inaugural year, after which time I have been buying most years. I frankly forgot about these bottles but now that I know the ageability of this wine, I'm not going to not touch the newer vintages.
#Stay safe, we're in this together. (1672 views)
Tasted by DollarMenunaire on 11/4/2019: This bottle has been on a strong plateau. It didn't even budge after sitting open in the fridge for a day. (1624 views)
Tasted by bhouk on 8/10/2019: Light gold. Salty and slightly nutty. Maybe a little oxidation. Interesting at eight years, but probably more enjoyable for me at six. Out of 2011s but still have a couple of 2012s that I need to check in on. (1665 views)
Tasted by DollarMenunaire on 3/11/2019: This is still drinking great with fantastic purity, texture, and mineral drive (1640 views)
Tasted by LW31 on 8/12/2018: Excellent. First time with Sigalas Asstyrtiko at age 7. Really come into its own. Mineral, smokey, it has filled out on the palate from its youth. Touch of Riesling-like petrol on the nose. Medium yellow color. Good energy and long, slightly waxy finish. Lacks a bit of definition to truly élèvate it. (1609 views)
Tasted by aikane on 7/1/2018 & rated 90 points: This is an excellent, powerful white wine made by experts in a very clean style. An incredible QPR, it improves with age, and this 2011 at age 7 still has a long future ahead of it. This is not a wine that stands out for its complexity and elegance, although it has some of both. It impresses with its power, its fruit, its clean style, and its superb balance of fruit, extract, acid, and length. Highly recommended. (1941 views)
Tasted by winemaker on 5/15/2018 & rated 92 points: In a Really good place! Lemony, crisp, minerally. It has mellowed a tad since my last bottle. Love this wine. (1693 views)
Tasted by BernieMSY on 2/12/2018 & rated 92 points: Very light lemon yellow. Apricot, white peaxh nose. Wonderful minerality, flint, unripe stone fruit. Nice body, chewy with a lingering finish. (1818 views)
Tasted by christyler on 9/25/2017 & rated 93 points: The age is really showing here, but in a good way. There's an interesting prickly / brambly / herbal wildness to the nose that's super intriguing.

The palate is super fresh and full of life. Has a nice creamy texture and moderate acidity. Lemony, herbal and full of minerality. A brilliant wine at any price. (2314 views)
Tasted by bhouk on 7/19/2017: Just continues to roar along; salty, yes, but somehow both crisp and creamy too. A fantastic, ageable, and affordable wine. (2323 views)
Tasted by unrelenting on 3/19/2017 & rated 93 points: The greatest white for $20? At 6 years of age, the hue is much darker and resembles the barrel fermented version. Always modest in fruit, the nose was always citrus dominant but now notes of cream soda. Medium weight but considerable finish. the High acidity is palate cleansing but the complexity is sufficient to enjoy it on its own. (2555 views)
Tasted by BernieMSY on 9/23/2016 & rated 92 points: Light straw color, honeydew nose. Minerality, stone fruit. Seems to evolved in the direction of a dry Riesling.
Good as ever. (2948 views)
Tasted by AlbertaOenologist on 9/12/2016 & rated 91 points: crisp, balanced, pairs well with Mediterranean food. (2902 views)
Tasted by zbsussman on 8/15/2016 & rated 93 points: So glad I held onto this. (2904 views)
Tasted by Viking 61 on 8/5/2016 & rated 90 points: Lovely lightly acidic wine with a golden wheat hue, notes of unripe peach, smooth viscosity, mineral backbone. Went great with the greek pastry of spinach and feta. (1962 views)
Tasted by DollarMenunaire on 8/3/2016: 2011 is showing great and has some years to go. Don't touch 2013s for another year. Try a 2015 for its young, Sancerre-like masochistic phase if you must. (1784 views)
Tasted by OttawaB on 6/4/2016 & rated 90 points: Very nice with a bit of a chill on it. Straw in color with green tinge. Aromas of wet stones, grass, slight brioche. Being shy on the nose at present.
Overall, medium bodied. Good weight to the mouthfeel. Clean and fresh with some chalkiness/creaminess. Citrus flavors, some peach, savoury, stony minerality.
Heavier then an Italian pinot grigio, but not as substantial as a white burgundy. Very nice to quaff on a warm spring day. (1603 views)
Tasted by BuzzzzOff on 5/20/2016 & rated 89 points: We picked up a few bottles of this popular Greek wine from the island of Santorini, the birthplace of the Assyrtiko varietal. Straw yellow with hints of green. Subtle aromas of citrus fruit with with a strong dose of wet stones in a humid forest. Nice, medium-bodied structure with well-meaning and received acidity, dry, slightly creamy and offering a long, slightly salty after-taste. We tried Assyrtiko several years ago while visiting Athens. It remains pretty much a mystery to us. Having said that, it is very pleasant when reasonably cool and a nice way to spend an afternoon with a little dry salt at the end. (2217 views)
Tasted by kdsipe on 5/15/2016 & rated 91 points: I've been meaning to try an Assyrtiko for some time now, heard good things, and this surpassed my expectations. Unique, beguiling and delicious. Rich, ripe aromas of walnut oil, lemon rind, roasted pineapple and peach pit. Medium to full bodied with strong acid, a touch of tannin and a clean, chalk filled finish. So smoky. So effusive. So good. However I enjoyed this less as it approached room temp. Serve slightly chilled. Paired well with grilled mako shark in a tomato, caper sauce. (1826 views)
Tasted by theronware on 3/12/2016 & rated 91 points: Wow! It's been almost 4 years since I had this wine, and it didn't appeal very much then because I felt it was somewhat shrill and one note. What a difference now. The wine is medium/full bodied with citrus on the nose but also an umami character to the fruit. Someone else said "lychee" which almost captures it -- almost like the sauce on a sole petrale...lemony but with some savory goodness underpinning the acidity. Excellent focus with a precise and saline finish. Just bought some of the 2015 vintage, which I will tuck away for a couple years. (1803 views)
Tasted by bags on 1/10/2016: in a perfect place (2264 views)
Tasted by MARCOSNITEROI on 1/6/2016 & rated 91 points: Já amarelo ouro com tons esverdeados. Interessante e convidativo. (1987 views)
Tasted by winemaker on 10/16/2015: Wow! Fantastic bottle. Lemony, crisp, minerally, stony and fresh. I love this wine. I love the fact that it can age a while and gain more depth. (2187 views)

Assyrtiko

Assyrtiko or Asyrtiko is a white Greek wine grape indigenous to the island of Santorini though it can also be found in other areas of Greece.

Despite the extremely hot and windy conditions of the island, Assyrtiko thrives. This is due in part because of the traditional koulara, a grape growing method that weaves the vine into a basket allowing the grapes to grow on the inside covered by the vine's foliage and protected from the harsh outside conditions. Vines are generally woven until yields are considered too low and nutrients to scare (around age 70) and are then clipped at their roots. A new vine is then grown onto the existing rootstock. This is important because the existing vines roots have grown deep into the soil to obtain the moisture stored in the pumice soils from the morning mists. It is estimated that many of the vines on the islands are centuries old which is made possible due to the island's inability to be affected by phylloxera since there is no clay in the soil. Because of the intense heat and lack of water harvest generally occurs in mid-August.

Wine style: Assyrtiko grapes clusters are large, with transparent yellow-gold skin and juicy flesh. Because of their weight and character, Assyrtiko is sometimes referred to as a red grape in white's clothing. In the volcanic soil of Santorini, there appear to be some unique characteristics that develop in the grape variety, and therefore in the wine. One of these characteristics is that Assyrtiko does not lose its acidity even if it is very ripe. After vinification, Assyrtiko develops a bone-dry grape with intense acidity and a strong mineral character which is perfect for pairing with Santorini's traditional fare such as grilled seafood.

The island of Santorini has three wine classifications: Santorini, Nykteri and Vinsanto. Santorini and Nykteri must be made up of at least 75% Assyrtiko and is it not uncommon to find a wine made up of 100% Assyrtiko.Nykteri, and sometimes Santorini, is generally a blend of Assyrtiko and two other indigenous white grapes on the island: Aidani and Athiri. Vinsanto is a sweet wine made of dried grapes and aged in oak for at least two years. It must consist of at least 51% Assyrtiko; the remaining percentage can come from Aidani and/or Athiri.
