Tasted by WojteG on 5/12/2024 & rated 88 points: I really don't know what to think about this wine. It confuses me a lot, but it's not only me. Look at pro critics.
Vinous - 94
Atkin - 94
J.Robinson - 17.5 ( I don't cite her scores, because her stupid 20 point system, but she very rarely gives ratings above 17 points)

Wow!
Me? ...88
Why?
Nice, but simple smell. A lot of cedar, oak, leather and not too much fruits.
Taste is much better, but..
... there's dissonance between vibrant acidity, soft tannins and the rest.
A lot of empty space I would say.
Nice long finish with black pepper.
What else is here. Juicy red cherry and blackberry, strawberry. Some coffee, minerals, black tea ( so good).
Intrigued wine no doubt about it. (48 views)
Tasted by querilant on 4/2/2024 & rated 89 points: I expected somewhat more from this 2nd wine of Chateau Montrose, even though 2011 was a mediocre vintage. Dark red, cherries and black fruit in the nose. Medium bodied with silky tannins. (127 views)
Tasted by TexasBob on 11/7/2023 & rated 92 points: Dark garnet color. Mildly Smokey nose with intense red berries and a bit of coffee. Sweet intense red berries and thick, rich tannins; this should age another two decades easily. Really good. (433 views)
Tasted by Philip67 on 4/25/2023 & rated 93 points: Attractive blackberry fruit, good weight and elegance. The structure is robust, giving a slightly austere finish that the fruit does not completely cover. Some complexity. Wait for another 5 years, then will last forever. Doubt it will ever become charming. (822 views)
Tasted by Aravind Asok on 1/8/2023: Pop and pour yesterday. Still late primary phase. On the nose: cedar, blackberry, spice and a touch of mint. On the palate: lovely acidity, excellent density; surprisingly hi-toned fruit for a St. Estephe, but solid dark earth and a touch of charcoal. Finishes with soft, finely grained tannin. Will be nice when this shows a bit more secondary, but the tannin seems like it will disappear before that. (1082 views)
Tasted by Henstee on 7/3/2022 & rated 67 points: Har ikke kunnet holde sig - skuffende kvalitet. (1279 views)
 Tasted by levicn on 7/2/2022 & rated 90 points: (1204 views)
Tasted by Romz on 6/22/2022 & rated 89 points: Opened this late evening, poured a glass and let it sit for an hour. Did not enjoy it initially & decided to revisit next day. Next day: much more approachable. Medium ruby core with slight dullish rims. Nose; dark fruit, plum, cassis, forest floor, tobacco leaves and black pepper. Palate; well integrated & polished tannins. Less angular and grippy next day. Medium Body & med+ acidity. Expected more complexity, layers and depth from the finish (1050 views)
Tasted by Henstee on 6/10/2022: Disappointing at this point. Has lost power. Still drinkable and pleasant, but not what one could expect from this house. (808 views)
Tasted by DAVino99 on 5/14/2021: Earthy, fragrant almost minty nose. Smooth tannins but a bit light on the finish. Colour is a dark inky red which i really enjoy (1735 views)
Tasted by Counsel71 on 3/13/2021: Nice aroma after over one a half hours of bottle decanting. On the palate - smooth but kinda light. Good wine but no wow factor. (1572 views)
Tasted by MaxiJacquet607 on 9/20/2020 & rated 91 points: Beautiful Saint Estèphe. Can only improve with time. Nice strong structure with a very round and silky finish. I'm glad I have another bottle. I will wait another 3+ years before opening it. 12-15 years for this one should bring it easily to a 94+ wine (2054 views)
Tasted by Trygve LM on 8/7/2020 & rated 90 points: Personally, I really like this wine. Very decent bordeaux indeed. Not flashy, just very solid. It will probably develope well in the years to come. I am happy that I have 10 bottles left from a case of 12- I think it will be pleasant and interesting to follow this vintage over the next years. The first bottle I gave as a present to my uncle, so I can only compare to other vintages and other wines. (2187 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 8/3/2020 & rated 90 points: This has morphed into a much better wine than anticipated. The wine has put on weight, gaining complexity and texture. Now, you find a fully ready-to-go claret with round, soft, cassis, cedar and tobacco notes. There is a gentle softness to the tannins and a fruity, earthy, round textured finish. (3323 views)
Tasted by markcic on 11/18/2019 & rated 91 points: We shared a glass after lunch. Dark fruit on the nose. The palate was dark berries, tobacco and leather. The finish moderate to long. (2159 views)
Tasted by jviz on 7/21/2019 & rated 90 points: Tasted at the Chateau alongside the 2011 Montrose.

I thought this actually might be better than the first wine of the same year at the moment. It’s really charming with bright red fruits and some soft spices. Pleasant and integrated. Nice buy for immediate consumption or restaurant order if the price is fair. (2262 views)
Tasted by Bobhelge on 8/31/2016 & rated 85 points: I am not the biggest fan of 2011 Bordeaux and the second wine from Chateau Montrose did not convince me to change opinion. Not giving you much, and what it gives you is mostly one dimensional fruit and unripe flavors. Maybe a bit strict here but this one was disappointing. (4717 views)
Tasted by jskuek on 5/28/2016 & rated 88 points: Sat tasting at Nam Lee Cheong - PnP didn't help, way too young. (4459 views)
Tasted by batas on 3/2/2015 & rated 90 points: After 24 hours in the bottle this is really very nice. (5217 views)
Tasted by Aravind Asok on 1/30/2015: Decanted. Dark red on the interior to translucent reddish-purple on the edges. Nice nose of earth, some smoke, blackberry, graphite; maybe a hint of VA. A little thinner than expected on the palate with good acidity. Some more blackberry, hints of tar and some suggestion of leather. Reasonable structure on the finish that leaves some residual chewiness. The chewiness sticks around for a bit, but the fruit fades away pretty quickly. Went fairly well with roast chicken. Not bad with some air now, but I was just getting a baseline. I went back to this after it had been open for a few hours (and after tasting a 2011 Fidelitas Boushey Vineyard) and wow was this tannic. Just really intense, gripping tannins. I guess that's what I expect from St. Estephe, so either I didn't notice it before the Fidelitas, or it only appeared after a while open.

Update: Great depth on Day 2. With more secondary notes of tar, coffee, and blackberries and a hint of leather in the background. The tannin has softened a bit and this is a pleasure to drink. Still slightly thin on the palate. (4698 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 4/8/2012 & rated 88 points: 72% Merlot and 28% Cabernet Sauvignon produce a wine that starts with earth, stone and cassis scents. Medium-bodied, soft-textured and round, the wine ends with a creamy blackberry finish. There is a hint of green in the end notes. 88-89 Pts (6815 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

St. Estèphe

Read more about St. Estephe and its wines Whereas the first activity recorded in Saint-Estèphe goes back as far as the Middle Bronze Age, the first vines date from the Roman Occupation. But it was the Bordeaux merchants who by aging and selling Saint-Estèphe wines themselves were largely responsible for this appellation's fame. And in the nineteenth century, noted for its prosperity, the great estates of today were created. The movement continues today with the merging of small estates.

A land of great wines, Saint-Estèphe is situated almost in the centre of the Médoc, close to the Gironde Estuary. The appellation is equidistant from Bordeaux and the Pointe de Grave.
The beds of soil are characterized by their remarkable diversity, the result of their undulating relief and excellent drainage. Quartz and well-rounded pebbles mingled with light, sandy surface soil are found everywhere, giving the wines a distinctive finesse. And the subsoil is made up of the famous Saint-Estèphe limestone, which outcrops on the west of the commune.

Tasting
Thanks to ideal conditions of climate and geology, Saint-Estèphe wines are characterized by their sturdy qualities and robust constitution. Accordingly, they can be laid down for a very long time while yet preserving their youth and freshness. Distinguished by a subsoil which is more clayey than that in the other communal appellations which lie by the river, the wine here attains a distinctive individuality : a very rich tannic structure, a fine deep red colour and an exceptional backbone with aromas of great finesse.

Production conditions (Decree dated September 11, 1936):

In order to have the right to the Saint-Estèphe appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the communes of Saint-Estèphe, "excluding any parcels in that area which are situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
