Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 93.2 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 93 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by DAN BAILEY on 3/7/2024: Served blind from magnum. Sour nose. Broad, rich, sweet attack. Angular and not harmonious. Very weird and actually quite unpleasant. A real bummer as I’m a huge vilmart fan and have this in both bottles and mags. Need to try from my own to see if this was a representative showing. (388 views)
Tasted by Enfantterrible on 2/3/2024 & rated 93 points: 20 years young. My last bottle of 6. This was really excellent. Fresh, nutty, yeasty, long finish. First of an excellent night at Tony’s (464 views)
Tasted by Decanting Queen on 12/27/2023 & rated 93 points: Drinking very nicely. Not so much oxidation. Tangerine, vanilla creaminess. Flavors are smooth but not very complex. Overall yummy enough that I would buy again. (1131 views)
Tasted by Jd6725 on 11/5/2023 & rated 94 points: A very solid wine but I hoped for a bit more from this. It beat the 04 Taitinger Cdc next to it for me. Definitely Vilmart but it could have had a bit more depth or ox and/or more acidity to balance. Other nearby vintages of this have been better lately. (639 views)
Tasted by kingkanu on 10/27/2023: From magnum, this was fairly tight to start with, but beautifully balanced with gorgeous mousse and impressive persistence, coming back at the end of the lunch it had opened up a lot and was showing plenty of creamy fruit and white chocolate, this was really good and should develop nicely over the coming decade or so (770 views)
Tasted by joshabramson on 1/22/2023 & rated 93 points: Mature but still fresh. Oxidative, rich and complex. Toasty! (1552 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 1/19/2023 & rated 93 points: Holding on in a beautiful peak with so much power and energy. Fruit still on the fresh and primary side though there is a hint of emerging secondary character -- ideal window to drink this for my palate. (1455 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 12/29/2021 & rated 93 points: In an ideal place with bright, and rich fruit and just a hint of maturing earth and mushroom to add complexity. Lively. (2697 views)
 Tasted by Elvis1969 on 11/22/2021 & rated 94 points: Semi-blind magnum tasting. (2413 views)
Tasted by rokerhill on 10/10/2020 & rated 93 points: Lovely rich lifted nose with hint of red apples, tight mineral green apples v dry, great length (3415 views)
Tasted by ubercuvee on 9/20/2020: Still in a really, really good place. (2888 views)
Tasted by Meeker1 on 8/30/2020: GREAT!

Still young! (467 views)
Tasted by brigcampbell on 7/28/2020: Blind: This was perfect for an afternoon with friends. There's a solid core of ripe fruit mid palate, no apologies need as there's plenty of grip for the leaner crowd. If I had to bring one sparkler to cover a crowd, this might be it because there's something for everyone. (3153 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 7/26/2020: Two years since the last bottle, from the same batch of bottles I bought back in 2014. The best way to describe this bottle is FRESH. The capital letters are intentional, as the wine has a freshness that made it really stand out. White flowers, lime, tangerine and green apple with honey on a stick. Finishes with a touch of red berry but mainly the taste of fresh cut green apples. The acidity remains bright and you could feel me that this wine has crossed 15 years old. To me, it shows no signs of age--not in color, aromatics or flavor. This is the freshness I am trying to convey. As to when I drink my remaining bottle, who the hell knows. (2912 views)
Tasted by ubercuvee on 7/23/2020: An absolutely spectacular bottle that showed considerably more fruit and density of material than recent bottles of both DomP '04 and Comtes '04 - there's certainly a hint of the elevage but nothing like as marked and overt as Selosse, just a hint of vanilla woven into the fruit. I think it's the best bottle of 2004 I've tried (I think the Krug will be the better wine in 10 years but it's still embyonic and not that pleasurable yet) (2282 views)
Tasted by Butty on 5/1/2020 & rated 93 points: Pale gold in appearance - no real sign of age and a very fine bead.

Nose starts off a little oddly (potentially some volatility I thought - the same with the last bottle). However, as last time, it blew off with a bit of air revealing a nose of baked apple, citrus and vanilla. It has a richness/sweetness on the nose suggesting it's age, but still maintains a freshness.

On the palate it has a great mouth feel and more of a BdB feel - chardonnay is dominating here - dry, rich, tense and nervy with minerals, citrus and a subtle spice. Still a spike from the bubbles that fades a little in the glass.

Overall this is very good. I would recommend opening half an hour before drinking (I don't think it would stand a decant) and serving quite cold. The bottle seemed better after a little air and stint in the fridge taking it down a couple of degrees.

Not a bad way to work through the lockdown. (2292 views)
Tasted by BenBlu on 1/30/2020 & rated 92 points: 2004 champagne horizontal (110 Taillevent London): Gentle vanilla on the nose evidence of the oak treatment. Fresh attack of cirtus, depth and lingering sweet oak on a long finish. Good but ultimately a bit too simple and obvious. (3091 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 12/4/2019: Gaja White Truffle Dinner (Osteria Langhe - Chicago IL): Seemed disjointed, off kilter. (3017 views)
Tasted by acyso on 7/21/2019 & rated 88 points: 2004 tête de cuvées blind (Chicago, IL): Served double blind. This bottle was not showing well -- there seemed to be a bit of volatility (not VA, but VOCs) and the palate had a bit of a flat texture too. Clearly a little bit of a weirdo, with a lot of pinot character. I guessed Goisses or Bollinger RD. (3563 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 6/15/2019 & rated 93 points: Need to find more of this. Just starting to enter a zone. Rich and vibrant at once. Last glass was the best as it opened up. (2673 views)
Tasted by Seth Rosenberg on 6/2/2019 & rated 92 points: Classic nose big spicy lemon and minerals. More of a hefty wine. Palate is good. Rich. Lots of lemon and spice. I was told that Vilmarts need a ton of time to really show and the ones with more age I have had have been pretty amazing so let's see. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 16/20. (2771 views)
Tasted by Enfantterrible on 4/20/2019 & rated 92 points: Rich, dry, toasty, and fine fine mousse (2387 views)
Tasted by LW31 on 12/3/2018: This is tight, coiled and dense. Will become fantastic wine in time but still very young and hard to get a read on it. Wait at least for 3-4 years before revisiting. (2744 views)
Tasted by MAOC on 10/6/2018: Quite clunky and awkward at the moment, with the acid poking through the lean fruit. Come back in 3-4 years as was very promising a couple of years ago **(**) (2567 views)
Tasted by asparagus on 9/1/2018 & rated 94 points: My 2018 farewell... (2588 views)

France - When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of consistent quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Sub-Region:

Champagne - The French region of Champagne (including the cities of Rheims, Épernay, and Aÿ) was the first region in the world to make sparkling wine in any quantity. Today, the name of the region is synonymous with the finest of all sparkling wines, and wine-making traditions of Champagne have become role models for sparkling wine producers, worldwide. Surprisingly, the region of Champagne is now responsible for only one bottle in 12 of all sparkling wine produced. Styles of champagne range in sweetness ranging from an extra brut or brut 0, to the basic brut to demi sec to doux; some houses produce single vintage champagnes and others produce non-vintage (or incorporate wines/grapes of multiple vintages), often to preserve a specific taste; combinations of grape varietals; and colors, including a rosé. There are several sub-appellations, including the Valley of the Marnes river running from Épernay west, Massif de Saint-Thierry north and west of Rheims, Valley of the Ardre, the Mountains of Rheims (between Rheims and Épernay), Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne, and Côte des Bar in the South. Champagne wine only uses three grape varietals (cépages): Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.
