| Community Tasting Notes (average 92.4 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 8 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 10/23/2019 & rated 93 points: Late night at Maison Dakota. Pop and poured. Drank over 45+mins. Drank in Grassl 1855. Appearance is clear, deep intensity, purplish ruby colour. Long legs. Nose is not toally clean, with atouch of barnyard earth, and then aromas of tar, graphite, black cherries, blackberries, black olives. Developing. On the palate, dry, high acidity, high alcohol (15%), grippy high tannins, full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of tobacco, graphite, tar, black cherries, blackberries, dark peppery spices, black olives, savoury meat emerging. Grippy long finish. Very good quality. Powerful with a touch of wildness character, yet with focused high acidity keeping it all in and lifted despite the ripeness. Already very good to drink, though I'm pretty sure this will age and develop over the next 4-5 years. Flagship bottle of the Domaine from Herve Bizeul. Apparently an equal parts blend of Syrah, Mourvedre, Grenache, and Carignan. (900 views) | | Tasted by Cikgoo on 12/31/2016 & rated 95 points: Second bottle on NYE! Really like the fruitiness but strong bodied flavour. Silky tannins with chocolate flavours. Strong finish! Will drink better in 1-3yrs! (1538 views) | | Tasted by tuzlukov on 7/11/2016 & rated 94 points: Roussillon 2016 (Roussillon): 50% Syrah, 30% Grenache and 10% of Carignan and 10% Mourvedre full-bodied, layered and fantastically concentrated profile on the palate. Despite all of the richness here, it stays lively and fresh, with integrated acidity and sound underlying structure. (1838 views) | | Tasted by jackfughy on 11/17/2013 & rated 89 points: just tasted it and it was well balanced lots of spice still yet too young lot of tannins and acidity. Never ending finish (2075 views) |
| Domaine du Clos des Fées Producer website
The vines were planted with pickaxes, barely touching the layers of parent-limestone, in pockets of pure clay, zigzagging along impressive green oak trees.
The stones were taken out of the vineyards one by one, by hand or pulled by a horse, then patiently and skilfully stacked by generations of wine growers from another era. They worked hard and long hours.
The conditions were so difficult that workers hired to plant the first vines in parts of the vineyard simply gave up. The elders in the village nicknamed the location "little Siberia" as a result.
What exactly does the word «Clos des Fées» ? In French, a «Clos» is a small parcel of vines surrounded by walls. A Fée is a «mythical being, in general a woman, with magical powers» which she uses with the help of a magic wand. Le Clos des Fees is a vineyard where the fairies would have lived, if they existed. The place is very isolated, beautiful, wild, very romantic which inspired us for the name.
