Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 88.3 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 17 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by johnrm on 11/16/2017 & rated 90 points: Pretty much as my note of Aug 2016. Violets and spice prominent on nose and palate. Plenty of berry fruit on the palate with soft, integrated tannin and unobtrusive acidity. Perhaps some plum/damson (as detected 2/3 years ago) and the mix of fruits is quite difficult to define but is seductive. Long and still attractive. The last of a case.
Note: Excellent after 24h. Very soft but it still has very good fruit and complexity. Fine wine. (1478 views)
Tasted by johnrm on 8/5/2016 & rated 90 points: Deep colour, violet-scented, spicy nose turning to blackberry as it softened in the glass. A trace of cinnamon on the nose? On the palate, some blackberry with a seductive range of dark berry fruits that are difficult to disentangle but any blackcurrant acidity has gone. Good balance. Soft and rich with black cherry fruit developing with time. On the end taste, some gentle powdery tannins with cherry stones.
Interesting development - over the last year, the damson/plum character seems to have evolved into blackberry/cherry.
Very attractive wine. Great now, but has future potential IMO. (1766 views)
Tasted by johnrm on 9/5/2015 & rated 88 points: Deep colour, fragrant, violet-scented nose. As with earlier bottles, berried fruit with touches of liquorice and damson skin at first.
Next day there was more blackberry on the nose and it was softer but retained a good balance of fruit (dark fruits), acidity and tannin. Vanilla evident later on. Open early. Nice wine. (1994 views)
Tasted by Rupert on 8/31/2015 & rated 90 points: Still fresh and fragrant, olives and blackcurrants, lovely (2155 views)
Tasted by johnrm on 5/26/2015 & rated 87 points: Good colour, fragrant nose (almost perfumed at first). Rich berry Syrah fruit with touches of liquorice and damson skin on the long, fragrant, tannic palate. Nice.
Next day it was softer and sweeter. There was a vanilla ice cream character early and the damson had become dark plum. The tannin had softened on the end taste. I think this has a fair few years ahead of it. Open early. (2103 views)
Tasted by VDLT Wine on 7/4/2014: Seemed nice. Palate fatigue had arrived. (1500 views)
Tasted by kenny pacino on 11/13/2013: Bacon, olives, Smoke, spice and deep dark plums. GV northern syrah Well worth a splash (1531 views)
Tasted by aagrawal on 11/5/2013 & rated 86 points: A bit uninspiring. Nose had some spice, some fruit; palate was balanced but kind of simple. A pretty good cheap wine, but nothing to remember. 86-87 (1397 views)

Tasted by Rupert on 3/16/2013: Lush, exuberantly fruity, perhaps a bit flabbier than past vintages. Didn't stop us from getting through five bottles. (1542 views)

Tasted by cwjames on 3/2/2013 & rated 90 points: Plenty of redcurrant fruit on the nose and palate, but very refined as well. Very appealing on opening the bottle. Quite delicious (837 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 1/30/2013: Very fresh and vibrant, made to "have the primary fruit character without anything 'underneath' but 'not for the american market', still containing balance." Which is all true. My kind of thing. Brilliant fruit perk up by its acidity, better after being open for several hours, fresh, very fun, wish it came in under $20. (972 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.
