Community Tasting Notes (average 89.4 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 12 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Phenol73 on 5/21/2018 & rated 90 points: Purple core. Signature Syrah with an expressive nose showing blueberries, lavender, a touch of anise and old leather. Attractive aroma profile, but does die down a bit after first 2-3 hours. Doesn't really need a long decant. Medium bodied with soft tannins and med+ acidity; shortish finish. Good, but probably want to finish these in the next 3-5 (max) years. (1177 views)
Tasted by Baudelaire on 11/21/2017 & rated 90 points: Très bon—goût défini, fort, distingué. Rien hors du cadre. (1250 views)
Tasted by Motz on 4/17/2017 & rated 90 points: Enjoyed over two days. Rock solid throughout, everything it should be. Versatile with food. (1881 views)
Tasted by rosey on 4/3/2016 & rated 88 points: Fair thin (1986 views)
Tasted by Alpton on 2/26/2015 & rated 86 points: Barnyardy nose, reminding of a Flander beer. As it opens it picks up blackberry and strong herbal notes. Decanted for 1h. Rich dark fruit upfront with good structure, but the mid is a bit thin. Sour/herbal finish. (2439 views)
Tasted by markmiller1127 on 1/23/2015: Color: Deep / dark.
Taste:Blackberries, leather. Took about 2 hours to mellow out. (1677 views)
Tasted by lockandkey2 on 1/5/2015 & rated 91 points: Layered meaty, smokey, earthy wine with hints of red cherry, fine tannins, good overall balance. After a few days it relaxes a bit more and loses the hints of fruit, and still an evolved, complex. (1518 views)
Tasted by NostraBacchus on 9/18/2014 & rated 91 points: Deep dark purple color. Amazing notes of dark berries, leather, raw beef, pepper and some minerality. It's medium-full bodied with medium-high acidity and medium-high tannin that still needs some time to soften. Good length. A very nice Crozes-Hermitage that's pretty dense and full of character.  Tasted by Phenol73 on 11/10/2013 & rated 89 points: Purple Haze. This wine is way too young - if you can, wait. It took no less than 2 hours of decanting to start to get anything out of this Crozes. On opening, this is incredibly tight and closed. It yields nothing and I even tried different shaped glassware to see if that made a difference. However, after +2 hours of full decanting, this starts to show what it will become. The nose is all blue and purple - violets, lavender, rich in blueberries and black currants. There is graphite and just hints of that lovely earthy, farmyard musk that accompanies a good Crozes. The tanins are full-frontal and the acidity is still very lively. This should age into something good. Give the secondary flavours time to develop and better compliment the fruit, which is still dominant at the moment. This is a good, but still tightly wound wine that is anywhere near to its full blossom. I probably won't try again until 2015+. (1582 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.
