Clean, pure, pepper and spice and all things nice!! in my view the best value Syrah from the NRhone. Drinking at its best right now and I have had 6 bottles over last 4 years. Excellent. 91 pts (1746 views) | | Tasted by jerhardt on 11/30/2010 flawed bottle: Corked (1886 views) | | Tasted by SimonG on 10/6/2006: Keith's Auction Blind Challenge Offline (Alba Restaurant, London): Still purple tinged. Fruity. Lght, quite bubblegummy. Needs a bit of time to mellow. Ok. (3032 views) | | Tasted by jerhardt on 1/15/2006 & rated 91 points: Very good again; consistent with previous bottles. (2566 views) | | Tasted by winekitchen on 12/1/2005: Bacon! This is a quintessential french syrah--meaty, smoky, with subtle fruit. The finish just goes on and on. Seriously good. (2659 views) | | Tasted by jerhardt on 10/24/2005 & rated 91 points: Fantastic wine, especially for the price. On day one, the nose of grilled meats and bacon fat was singing right out of the bottle. The palate was beautifully balanced and delivered on the promise of the scents. On day two, the nose fell off somewhat, but overall the wine picked up weight. It will be interesting to see what this does over the next five years. (1743 views) | | Tasted by DFC on 8/16/2005 & rated 88 points: Served with BBQ spare ribs. Decanted for 30 minutes. Color is dark ruby with some purple at the rim, and the body is medium in weight. On the nose, nicely aromatic flowers and blueberries. On the palate, non-descript (though quite tasty) black fruits. Starts off with a nice tight structure, but after an hour, this begins to go somewhat out of whack. The mid-palate remains great throughout...it is the finish that fades in intensity, though it lasts a good 20 seconds. What started off as a nice find became merely OK in the end. While I still found this wine an enjoyable drink, it's no steal at around $20. (1919 views) | | Tasted by jerhardt on 8/5/2005 & rated 91 points: TNs: Some nice values (Sandrone, Magnien, Verget, Leitz, and more): Amazing wine for the price. Beautifully perfumed and well balanced with aromas of smokey meat and bacon fat, backed by nice dark fruit on the palate. (2429 views) |

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent. The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)
Regional History: Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.
