Community Tasting Notes (average 87 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 22 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by depechemoroder on 3/27/2021 & rated 88 points: Consistent with previous note - the volatility on the finish really does vary with these. (274 views)
Tasted by depechemoroder on 2/20/2021 & rated 89 points: Cooked fruits, cacao, figs, and roast meats. Quite a calm and dignified bottle that lacks some of the more ferral qualities I've had on other bottles. Slight volatility on the finish, but a very pleasant wine. (286 views)
Tasted by depechemoroder on 1/30/2021 & rated 89 points: Dried blood, roast meats, and stewed prunes. This has lots of character, delightful texture, and a nice balance between energetic and broad. There is just a touch of volatility on the finish, but I wouldn't say there is alcoholic heat as such. This element seems to vary so if you're sensitive to a touch of heat be aware. In a lovely spot for my palate. (263 views)
Tasted by TowerCellar on 10/15/2018 & rated 84 points: Strong alcohol on this really turned me off. There wasn't much nuance in the flavors, which was sad, since I have really liked a previous vintage. It was overly fruity, without much differentiation over time. I had a hard time pairing this with anything (we had manchego, parmesan, pecorino, sweet salami, and peppered salami - worked best with the manchego). (775 views)
Tasted by Texas Jerky on 2/16/2017 & rated 86 points: Big purple, fruit forward lavender, lavish wine. A bit over the top for my taste, but I can imagine it appealing to some. (1092 views)
Tasted by kcsteve on 9/17/2015 & rated 88 points: Same rating as bottle consumed on 8/2/15, but remarkably different. Bottle variation? Stored exactly the same. No funk upon opening. Much more alcohol and tanninns on the palate; the fruit was more prononced, and the finsih longer. (1563 views)
Tasted by kcsteve on 8/2/2015 & rated 88 points: Dark fruits, a bit of earthiness, some funk that blew off after 15 minutes. Short, but nice finish. Great QPR (1552 views)
Tasted by Al Ehrhardt on 6/22/2015: This was the oldest bottle I have had, and maybe the best, not sure if it was just the vintage. Still very youthful, but mellowed and lost baby fat. (1585 views)
Tasted by mfkantor on 5/16/2015 & rated 89 points: A bit of funk on the nose and in the first few minutes. Let open for about 20-30 minutes and mellowed a bit. Some great dark fruit. Not a lot to it at the end but a great value. (1362 views)
Tasted by HungryMother on 10/26/2013 & rated 90 points: I love this wine - both for its profile and because it is a terrific value. Initially, the nose is funky (a bit mushroomy), but don't let that put you off. Opens up beautifully after an hour or so, and improves on the second day, which is why we often choose it as a "weeknight" wine. Balanced in the mouth, with some earthiness, light berries, tobacco and currants. Definitely one to drink now. (1619 views)
Tasted by Fuzzyblues on 10/26/2013 & rated 87 points: Ruby colored. It smells earthy,(forest floor) spicy aroma and currant . It tastes like currant , dark fruit, and petrol. medium body, smooth (a bit oily?), with a long finish. Taste smooths out after opening, nice drinkable wine. (2629 views)
Tasted by gordoyflaca on 5/11/2013 & rated 90 points: dark cherry fruit with just a bit of leather. (1764 views)
Tasted by JJ Mills on 3/15/2013 & rated 86 points: Good everyday drinker. Nothing fancy (1877 views)
Tasted by rjm_va on 2/17/2013 & rated 87 points: Good but not great. Another bottle that seems unrelated to the Garagiste fantasy prose (1881 views)
Tasted by Atwellian on 6/21/2012 & rated 86 points: Dark ruby. Reticent nose, alcohol, a hint of cherry. Initial taste and mouthfeel is almost syrupy, but opens and smooths with some air. Concentrated fruits with black pepper, plum. Some heat. That Rhonish metallic/mineral core opens up in about a half hour, medium- long finish finish. Good value in the $16 range. (1751 views)
Tasted by vanpe003 on 5/24/2012 & rated 87 points: A rustic style, but smoother than many in the category. Aromas somewhat reminiscent of men's cologne. On the palate, a touch of pepper, earth and herbs. Needs to be served colder than I did (room temperature) as it gets a touch muddy as it warmed up. Decent QPR, but not something I get really excited about. 87+points. (1758 views)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.
