Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.4 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 7 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by ElJefeTX on 6/22/2022 & rated 94 points: Medium gold hue with an insane nose of sautéed wild mushrooms and Stilton cheese followed by lighter aromas of tropical fruit and sea spray. 40+ years old and still tons of definition on the palate, both rich and light on its feet, with a nutty characteristic followed by a soft citrus note on the finish. An absolutely treat to taste. (550 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 4/22/2022 flawed bottle: During a blind tasting dinner. This was affected by TCA. Otherwise the wine showed fresh with good mid mouth palate and crisp acidity. NR (1175 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 6/28/2019 & rated 89 points: Straw, sea salt, seashell and consummate. Palate opened up in the glass with stone fruit and petrol. It still had lots of freshness for almost 40 year old wine. (1194 views)
Tasted by Ms. Bubblehead on 8/19/2018: 1980 is said to be the first vintage of biodynamic vintage for Nicolas Joly, and Coulée de Serrant is said the be the finest. I was amazed by this aged chenin blanc. It presented light to medium yellow color. Tasted blind, on the nose, it was full of herbs, seasalt, roasted leafs, and light tropical fruits, very Loire characteristics, I thought it was Cotat's wine (which I love dearly). On the palate, it was full of energy, I wouldn't image it is a wine of more than 35 years. Herbal tea, yellow and stony fruits, and complex flavour with finish of sea salt. It was a pleasant and rare wine to enjoy. The wine was probably performed at its finest stage. (1493 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 8/17/2018 & rated 90 points: Nose was lovely with petrol, tropical fruit and coffee beans. Palate was over the peak with faded fruit but the intoxicating old chenin blanc nose was captivating (1324 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 5/4/2017 & rated 91 points: Auswine - 90s and earlier tasting: Blind. Oxidative, nutty, truffle, quite herbal throughout as well. The palate has some sweetness to it, but the acidity kicks in well and gives it focus. Another wine that improved well with time in the glass, showing a bit more fruit and depth. Drink now after giving it a little air. (1680 views)
Tasted by AV2012 on 3/31/2015 & rated 88 points: Coulee de Serrant 1980-2006: From pre-biodynamic days. Very light colour for the age, actually may be even lighter than bottles from late 80s and 90s. Mango, exotic fruits on the nose, which is not very expressive, didn't feel any botrytis either. Accidity from pickle, probably used a lot of SO2 to preserve the wine in this condition. The most surprising about this wine is its freshness, but the wine seemed somehow soulless. (2325 views)

Chenin Blanc

Varietal character (Appellation America)

Clos de la Coulée de Serrant

On weinlagen.info

The “Coulée de Serrant“
It is with it only an “appellation controlee” of 7 hectares only. Located on very stiff slopes, dominating the Loire, the vines resulting from the type of vine “chenin” have more than 35 to 40 years of average age; oldest having more 80 years give wood to make new vines carrying the originality of the place. Partly cultivated with the horse, or the hand, the average output is with 20/25 hectolitres per hectare (40 authorized). The ground far from thick, (20 with 40 cm on average) is on a red schist bottom obliques which drains the vines perfectly.

The orientation of the slopes is especially Southern/Southern East (thank you to consult the data sheet for more details). The grape harvest is done in 5 times out of 3 to 4 weeks to obtain the most coloured possible maturity and the most marked by the botrytis.

Wine making : out of barrel of 500 liters (never more than new wood 5%).

Production: approximately 20/25000 bottles per annum.
