Community Tasting Notes (average 91.3 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 110 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by glou.sf on 4/26/2024: No formal notes. This was drinking beautifully! Lovely aged Chenin, probably at peak now. 93-94ish (332 views)
Tasted by T.E.D. on 8/23/2023 & rated 91 points: Dug this out of the cellar. Very pale dark straw color. On the nose wet paint, nail polish remover, sweet oak, crumble. Palate shows some harsh notes. Bees wax, lanolin and with hints of burnt oak, honey. Once again conplex and intriguing. Would only go by the glass here with a pate, gras, or creme brûlée (832 views)
Tasted by bjbu on 10/8/2022 & rated 91 points: Intensity medium (+), Mango, ripe (yellow) apple, apple cider, roasted almond, linoleum. Acidity medium, finish medium (+). (1361 views)
Tasted by ThijsV on 10/8/2022 & rated 94 points: WSET reunion tasting group+ (Home, Utrecht): Opened 5 hours in advance, no decanting. Deep golden. Kept developing over the night and even the following days. Started of with an oxidative apple juice, bruised yellow apple, linoleum, sherry, nutty, marmelade bitter, elderflower, honey. Very long finish. On day 2 even more integrated. Spectacular and my WOTN, as it was for most people (1531 views)

Minutenlange afdronk. Doet me aan mijn mooiste wijnmomenten denken.

Uniek groots (2056 views)
Tasted by acyso on 6/6/2021 & rated 83 points: "Brunch is the gamay of meals" (Chicago, IL): This might be among the best bottles of Joly I've ever tasted. I guess sometimes nature conspires against his attempts to ruin the great terroir he owns. Nonetheless a very weird wine with a nose that can't be pinned down. Sometimes there are some really off-putting doughy aromas, then some times there are some yellow fruits. The palate is still very broad and alcoholic. Not my style of wine at all -- barely any acidity (and at times fruit), and just a lot of weird animally notes. (3594 views)
Tasted by CharlatanDario on 3/25/2021 & rated 92 points: upon opening: hesitant. Not very expressive. Cake, earl grey, ripe peach, calvados.

After 2h: excellent punch, acidity awakened (2447 views)
Tasted by SteveG on 6/5/2020 & rated 93 points: From memory, as others have noted a beguiling and super-complex wine, changed with temperature, air, several days of tasting, best not too cold. Almost too intense for most food, offset with huge freshening acidity. Totally dry overripe and slightly-botrytised chenin blanc, genuinely unique. (3250 views)
Tasted by gwkozar on 9/25/2019 & rated 92 points: decanted and recorked. Palate was fresh, golden raisin, honey. Best of night. went well with non-beef dishes. This bottle aged better than my 5 other Serrant bottles. (3316 views)
Tasted by Jammy Wine on 8/2/2019 & rated 87 points: Nicolas Joly wines are always unique and interesting to try. Volatile fragrant. Botrytis fruits of pineapple, tinned peach and toffee. Light and airy minerals on the palate. Lengthy saline and taut finish. Drinking fine now but will probably get funkier with more cellaring if that is what you are looking for. (87/100) (3243 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 1/22/2019 & rated 91 points: Mixed Wines at Martina (Martina, Mpls): Medium gold color. Drank a glass over 90 minutes. This changed quite a bit over the 90 minutes I had it in glass. This isn't something that everyone is going to gravitate to, but it is a complex and intriguing wine. There's some typicity here for sure in the wooly, beeswax character, peach, candied orange peel, dried apricot, oxidative, honeyed goat cheese, and spice. (3572 views)
Tasted by liteagilis on 1/2/2019: Hauntingly similar to my thoughts on the 00. Like the wines were the same. But they weren’t. (3007 views)
Tasted by Krassens on 11/7/2018 & rated 92 points: Intruguing, complex, highly interesting wine. Medium yellow color. On the nose apricots, almonds, fennel, salty. On the palate quite chewy, spicy, stingy and intensive acidity but more salty/hot than fruit, stellar length.

Quite unique and in no way winding down at this stage. (2494 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 5/2/2018 flawed bottle: Matt's Big 5-0 Birthday Bash (Heirloom, St.Paul, MN): Oxidized, Sherry-like. (3397 views)
Tasted by T.E.D. on 11/24/2017 & rated 92 points: A thinking mans wine and not one for novices. Robust notes of rubber band, nutty oil, funky goat cheese perhaps. Very rustic and nuanced. (3117 views)
Tasted by Ramberg on 8/15/2017 & rated 90 points: No formal notes.
A fun wine indeed, especially when served blind.
Nose with wet wool, honey, touch of dry sherry & dry grass, nutty, sweeter tropical and white fruits too.
Palate with wet wool, pears, honey, again some grass, lemons, sweeter peaches, beeswax, some nice spices and oxidation.
Great stuff. (1904 views)
Tasted by isaacjamesbaker on 7/2/2017 & rated 92 points: So good! Light orange color. Smells seriously like olive oil, honey, almond, candle wax, spiced marmalade, saline. Tangy buy plump with glorious texture but bright acidity. Honey, meringue, seawater, herbal, spicy tones. Complex and intriguing but also straight-up delicious. (3613 views)
Tasted by manonthemoon on 7/1/2017 & rated 92 points: Took to a friends house.
Really enjoyed the wine, but it probably didn't have the proper amount of time to open up completely.
Still the great apple cider honey salt mineral mix showing, always a pleasure. (3480 views)
Tasted by gwkozar on 5/7/2017 & rated 90 points: Decanted 30 minutes, served cool. Minimal nose. Palate started out dry and hollow fruit, as it breathed it developed some mid palate of pear, honey, dry finish. Saved some for 2nd night experience. (3231 views)
Tasted by Duncan on 9/17/2016 & rated 98 points: Astonishingly good! Light gold in colour. The nose a beautiful and ever-changing mix of honey, herbs, lanolin, beeswax and much more. On the palate, rich but dry, full-bodied but graceful. Great texture, great length. I've had this vintage a couple of times before and enjoyed it, but this bottle, at this stage of maturity, was in a different league. After half a glass I realised it was probably the greatest white wine I'd ever had. An hour later I decided I should drop the word 'probably.' 15%, cork. (4042 views)
Tasted by Kirk Grant on 7/10/2016: Golden yellow in the glass, rich notes of poached pears, baked apples, vanilla, and mushroom come across on the nose. The palate is medium body, with high acidity and creamy notes of apple, pear, quince, and kiwi persist on a long and complex finish. There is a hint of oxidation here, but it's so subtle that it almost seems to add to the complexity. Outstanding!!! A wine of distinction that deserves your attention and though. I wish I had more... (4108 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 3/24/2016 & rated 92 points: Hosting GC from WB: Honey, melon, mint and herbs. Gets more expressive with air, there is really good texture and length. Some tang from the acidity that cuts through nicely. In a good place but will improve as well. (3669 views)
Tasted by kstoddard on 3/14/2016 flawed bottle: G5 (Dale): Oxidized (3869 views)
Tasted by pryby on 10/23/2015 & rated 90 points: Decanted twice and drank over 5 hours.
Boy this is an oddball. Lanolin, honey, brine, walnuts, petrol, lemon peel. Loooong finish, thick mouthfeel.
Agree with a lot of the reviews - it is objectively "good" but not especially tasty. Maybe thought-provoking is a better word.
I assume it will continue to evolve over time, but to what.... No idea!
I did not enjoy this very much alone, but it really sang with a cumin roast chicken. (4107 views)
Tasted by isbjoern on 10/18/2015: Definitely a unique wine. As suggeested on Joly's website, we opened the wine 5 days before we drank it. Oxidized on the nose, but very fresh on the palate. Lots of Botrytis but also no hint of sugar. Very alcoholic, but strangely it doesn't bother me. A wine for contemplation, not for the hedonistic wine society. Impossible for me to rate the wine, it is all about the experience. - no score (3190 views)

Chenin Blanc

Varietal character (Appellation America)

Clos de la Coulée de Serrant

On weinlagen.info

The “Coulée de Serrant“
It is with it only an “appellation controlee” of 7 hectares only. Located on very stiff slopes, dominating the Loire, the vines resulting from the type of vine “chenin” have more than 35 to 40 years of average age; oldest having more 80 years give wood to make new vines carrying the originality of the place. Partly cultivated with the horse, or the hand, the average output is with 20/25 hectolitres per hectare (40 authorized). The ground far from thick, (20 with 40 cm on average) is on a red schist bottom obliques which drains the vines perfectly.

The orientation of the slopes is especially Southern/Southern East (thank you to consult the data sheet for more details). The grape harvest is done in 5 times out of 3 to 4 weeks to obtain the most coloured possible maturity and the most marked by the botrytis.

Wine making : out of barrel of 500 liters (never more than new wood 5%).

Production: approximately 20/25000 bottles per annum.
