Community Tasting Notes (average 94 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 14 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Burglover13 on 8/17/2021 flawed bottle: Badly corked. (784 views)
Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 11/2/2020: A deep but fresh golden colour with a green tinge at the edge. It had a complex and expansive nose of spiced orchard fruits, spearmint cream, smoke, toast and white mushroom. The palate is rich, heady and explosive. There's a touch of something green and nettle-like below the flesh, giving a nod to the vintage. It has such great volume and the finish is so long and layered, with a gentle squeeze of grapefruit right at the end. (1250 views)
Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 4/3/2020: In a nice place. Smells of custard apple, toast, autumn leaves, vanilla and cinnamon. It is rich and heady in the mouth. There are hints of exoticism and a heart of sweet peach. It is layered, powerful and very long., with some toffee apple development. (1365 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 9/11/2019: Color looks perfect here (and as you might imagine given the producer, we were worried about that).

Tight nose at the outset, with buttered nuts in the background. Pristine bottle on the palate - lengthy finish. Really nice. (1462 views)
Tasted by La Cave d'Argent on 7/22/2017 & rated 95 points: Amy's Semicentennial Birthday "Season"; 7/21/2017-7/23/2017 (La Jolla, California): Although many of Sauzet's wines have been plagued by premature oxidation, this particular bottle shows nothing of the sort. Medium gold in color, it is fresh, medium-bodied, seamlessly alcoholic and packed with complex aromas and flavors. Nougat, wet stones, lemons, peaches and almonds adorn the nose and palate. The middle is dense and the lengthy finish concludes with a wisp of spice. This 13-year-old specimen is very youthful. Bottles in comparable condition should hold up well for several more years. Drink now-2024. (3107 views)
Tasted by CMallard on 2/22/2017 flawed bottle: Brought to Gary Danko for Yes Day. Oxidized. Too bad (1847 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 9/24/2015 flawed bottle: La Paulée Meets Chicago - Dinner (Blackbird - Chicago IL): A shadow of how well this wine has shown before. Ripe fruit, lots of concentration, just very advanced, so not worth drinking in this flight of 02/04/06 plus the rest of the evening. (3307 views)
Tasted by conviction buy on 9/5/2015 & rated 93 points: Closed initially, with only hint of floral, honey aroma. Over time, the wine opened up, nothing dramatic but different aroma emerged from the glass one after another. Superb finess, power without heaviness. (2075 views)
Tasted by Alex G. on 6/26/2015: Served blind - highly mineral. Actually guessed this producer and vintage correctly. Good but not at the top of my list. (2121 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 9/27/2014 & rated 94 points: 2004 Montrachet (Chez Schmidt - Chicago IL): Flight of 2004 Montrachet. Exceptional aromas dominated by powerful, ripe orchard fruit with lemon peel, toasted almonds and background floral notes. Similar flavors that are slightly less powerful, while very nicely balanced, nuanced and textured. Slightly bigger and better than another bottle from earlier this year (I think from the same case). Much better than a tired Sauzet 2005 Montrachet from a week ago from my cellar. (2273 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 3/28/2014: Friday Night Dinner with Friends (Chez Schmidt - Chicago IL): Very approachable and balanced, just far more subtle and subdued than I expected. Very good overall, still quite fresh. 92 points tonight. (2303 views)
Tasted by DAN BAILEY on 8/3/2013: Slightly advanced colour but actually a very nice showing. Rich palate but a little one dimensional. Overshadowed by the 05 boillot monty. (1457 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 7/20/2007 & rated 93 points: Martin Weiner Montrachet and other Grand Cru White Burgs Dinner Tasting (Chez Weiner, Westwood, California): Pale lemon yellow color; floral, lemon and mineral nose; sweet lemon palate, rich, but young and very tight, with great length; long finish (1516 views)

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
