Tasted by beatles on 3/6/2024 & rated 92 points: Tasted vis-a-vis the 2005, this is of course the lighter wine, brighter also, more open with local joie de vivre. Garrigue, chalk, good acidity, red berries in the background. Certainly no hurry.
#VincentParisChezMoi (557 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 3/5/2024: Much darker in color compared to the 2004 Vincent Paris Granit 60 and less evolved. While the Granit 60 is ready to drink, this wines needs more time. Yes, it is not as massive as the 2005 La Geynale, but it it still displays primary fruit with some bacon, olive, iron notes in a medium bodied palate. I believe there is much to come in 5 years even if there was some evolution in the glass. Granit 60 tasting chez Lillelund. (247 views)
Tasted by Ericsson on 9/21/2023 & rated 91 points: 2 ans depuis ma dernière bouteille.
(442 views)
Tasted by Shloly on 6/7/2023 & rated 90 points: The wine is clear, with medium ruby colour, garnet towards the rims, and thick legs.

On the nose, the wine is clean, with medium plus primary aroma intensity of red fruits, plums, cassis, red berries, spices, black pepper, hints of citrus, floral, medium secondary aroma intensity of clove, along with medium tertiary aroma intensity of meat, earth, and hints of cooked fruits.

On the palate the wine is dry, with medium plus acidity, medium smooth tannins, medium alcohol, medium body, medium plus primary flavour intensity of red fruits, sour cherries, forest berreis, plums, spices, floral, along with medium tertiary flavour intensity of meat.

Finish is long, with pronounce minerality towards mid-palate.

The wine is of a very good quality, as it is showing excellent balance between flavour intensity, acidity, and minerality.
It is having great length, and multi layers of characteristics, both on nose and palate, which complementing its complexity.

The wine was very appealing at time of tasting, pleasant, expressive and elegant. I believe that this is the time to fully enjoy its potential. (505 views)
Tasted by kostaslonis on 6/7/2023: Tasting Ground official tasting, Cornas La Geynale, From Uncle to Nephew (Oinoscent): Bottles open 10.15 and tasted 14.00, no decant
Earthy, medium intensity in the nose, dried cherries, currants, floral notes, light chocolate and coffee notes, smoky.
In the palate, the wine shows finesse, elegance, its smooth and juicy, red cherry, smoky again, decadent, a touch warm, peppery, fine tannins, medium to full body and long finish (554 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 12/7/2022: Commanderie des Costes du Rhone - Fall 2022 Intronization (Aquavit): Double Cornas and I'm a huge fan. A bit youngish but there's a lot of character to the wine. Jumps out at you. I expect it will last for many more years and just get better. (1286 views)
Tasted by Kemo Sabe on 2/25/2022 & rated 92 points: Really nice. Loads of power and nuance. Spice, pepper, campfire, meat, grilled notes and some iron. Dark berries, plenty of fruit. Great balance with plenty of structure. Got better over the 2 hours we drank it. 92+ has upside. (1351 views)
Tasted by Nicephoras on 1/7/2022: Horribly corked. (1357 views)
Tasted by Nicephoras on 1/7/2022: Wow, the guesses on this blind were all over the place. Two people called it a young Barolo. Another called it a 90s Napa, another a Cab Franc dominant Bordeaux and someone a 15 red Burgundy. Closest call was an early 90s Cote Rotie. Personally, it felt not too atypical; the nose has a lot of VA, but some very pretty dark reddish fruit (a bit a la Allemand). However, the palate is very tannic, despite this being 04 - it's just a wall of structure right now, with some olive on the finish. I'm burying the rest of mine in storage. I'd note the provenance on this is impeccable, so they've been aging appropriately. (1531 views)
Tasted by Ericsson on 9/1/2021 & rated 91 points: Ouvert 30 minutes puis dégusté durant 2 heures.
(1310 views)
Tasted by beatles on 3/18/2021 & rated 92 points: Served vis-avis the Allemand, this was overmatched. A rustic presence here, deep, black, manly, plenth of olives and dark fruit, tannins galore, your old grumpy Cornas, still loveable and local: no hurry here, just remember the roasted leg of lamb.
#AndréInMemoriam (1869 views)
Tasted by glou.sf on 8/29/2020 & rated 93 points: Red fruit, iron, dark berries, and some old leather notes on the nose. Well integrated tannins, yet with good structure and nice acidity. Flavors of dark fruit, brine, olives, and iron on the palate. Nice finish. The nose needed a bit of air, but the palate was generally more impressive on the wine. Drinking really well right now. (1292 views)
Tasted by beatles on 1/4/2020 & rated 93 points: A very classy & classic example - pushing above it's weight considering the vintage. Mature, very balanced, very true to the land, olives here, tobacco, garrigie, very leveled. Mature, but no hurry.

Tasted by acyso on 5/1/2019 & rated 90 points: Geynale study (Chicago, IL): 2004 is one of my favourite Rhone vintages of the current millenium so far, as it is one that lends itself to elegance, but I'll have to admit that this wine was quite inscrutable. It's just an upset, coiled bottle of black fruit and earth, and seemed to refuse to give up anything. You could coax a little fruit here and there with some swirling, but the structure seemed to be dominated by the tannins and there was none of the elegance of the vintage here. Still, I did feel like the raw materials are there, maybe this just needs more time? (2258 views)
Tasted by frenchiecagowine on 5/1/2019 & rated 91 points: Brief note as this was a long time ago. Tasted next to a 2006 Michel "Geynale" as well as younger "Geynale" from Vincent Paris, this was surprisingly mute, rustic and unforgiving. Still, you can feel it's a fantastic Cornas but one might wonder if it will ever open up, even with time. (1168 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 10/15/2018: Burgundy meets Cornas. Light on its feet, elegant even, but with distinct Cornas feautures, blood, olives, iron and tobacco notes. While elegant, the fruit has a wild side as well. Lovely Cornas, better on day 2. (1274 views)
Tasted by cardsandwine on 1/11/2017: Still on the young side, but great promise for the future. Nicely balanced, full bodied wine, however the fruit is still in the background. (1845 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 11/5/2015: 2004 Rhone Tasting chez Lillelund (Lilleund's home): We tasted this next to the Allemand Reynard, and, sadly, this wine was completely overshadowed by the Allemand. This wine, though, is good in its own right, it's more subtle and understated compared to the Allemand, cool in nature, upright. Benefitted from air. (3050 views)
Tasted by beatles on 11/5/2015 & rated 93 points: Manly and mineral, this is there real deal; blood and iron, Cornas in full, with a very decent fruit base. For a lean vintage this is something else, a classy wine in full balance, bravo. (1825 views)
Tasted by cardsandwine on 12/14/2014: Excellent Cornas, albeit still on the young side. Lots of potential here. Ruby red hue with a nice earthy and peppery palate. Good balance and acidity. (2656 views)
Tasted by salil on 5/5/2014 & rated 92 points: Brooding and austere at first, still somewhat closed down, but after a couple of hours in the decanter this opens up really nicely. The fruit is still quite rich and sappy but it's starting to show some of that savoury developed Cornas smoky, meaty and leathery character, particularly with air as the flavours keep getting more tertiary and savoury the longer it's open. Really enjoyable, but I'll leave my other bottles alone for a few more years. (3198 views)
Tasted by kingkanu on 2/15/2014 & rated 88 points: This was a good bottle of Cornas, it had most of what you look for with the earthy meaty flavours with some elegence and decent length, but it just wasn't quite the full article for me, there's nothing wrong with it as such, but just lacked a bit of something. (2216 views)
Tasted by Sotto325 on 1/2/2014 & rated 90 points: A bit disappointing and definitely ready--almost on its right shoulder-- to drink. This was highly touted at a fine restaurant and I expected a Pape or Allemande experience. Instead, this wine was pleasant, nicely made but had a more genericized flavor profile which did not emphasize the gutsy side of Cornas nor the fiery pepper of the syrah. The nose was restrained and the dark cherry notes were muted, with an almost merlot like smoothness. It was tough to coax out the more typical earthy, brighter cherry tones. (2222 views)
Tasted by sharonandroland on 9/8/2013 & rated 89 points: The hawthorn theme of this producers starts to show in this vintage. A bit light on the body and the tannins are still rather chalky, but fine grained. Alcohol is showing slightly. (1781 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 2/8/2013: This smelled like typically funky French Syrah with some olives thrown in. Surprisingly, in the mouth, it is a lot cleaner than it smells with nicely textured red fruit, medium weight and sound acidity. Certainly not a monstrous or overly animal Cornas-more toward the restrained side of things. (1826 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.
