Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.7 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 44 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Tgood on 11/24/2023 & rated 89 points: 55F since acquisition on release - browning ruby - mushrooms and maderized decaying plum/prune interface fruit on nice bed of soil and a fair dollop of balsamico - on the basis of this bottle’s performance I’d drink up as I plan to do with my few remaining bottles hoping they may be a trifle less oxidized retaining a bit more fresh fruit to go with the nice dose of earth and balsamico.
Well well - what a few hours open in bottle will do - maderized decay funk blew off a bit as black raspberry emerged for a little while before
reverting to decay motif.
Opened another bottle with same results. (493 views)
Tasted by THECORKDORK on 7/8/2022 & rated 93 points: Totally underrated estate. Just entering its window of deliciousness. Dried cherry, lifted dried floral notes, italian herbs, and balsamico. (1125 views)
Tasted by CADomer on 4/15/2022 & rated 93 points: Another delicious bottle of this wine. Showing notes of crushed violets, cinnamon, and charred herbs with juicy delicious black cherries.
The wine is ripe and deep, reflecting the vintage, but the weight is still so nice. (1184 views)
Tasted by nzinkgraf on 11/25/2021: Chewy dark cherry. Rustic texture, but thoroughly enjoyable for that. A little browning at the rim. Medium plus acid. Medium tannin. Very sturdy, flavor profile shows modest development. Some underbrush tones.

Day 2 and a deeper cola color across the wine. Blood and iron aromas. Lots of chewy texture, but not as rustic.

Day 3 and takes a big turn it maturity. Tea, smoke, blood and iron. Still drinking fine, would want with tomatoes and mushrooms going forward. (1410 views)
Tasted by S-C-S on 10/19/2021 & rated 92 points: Drink now, pop & pour, balanced … good, but not outstanding 😉 (1415 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 7/13/2021 flawed bottle: Italian Wine Dinner with Cedar (Oceanique - Evanston IL): I thought it somewhat stewed, others thought it much too bretty. (1987 views)
Tasted by Achermann on 5/24/2020 & rated 94 points: Neighbor to Biondi Santi - 400 above sea level. 36 months on oak - first 30 hl, then 5 hl - 12 months in the bottle.

This smells so lovely - so pure Tuscan fruit and herbs. Dark berries, a little smoke, olives, green herbs, violet, chocolate, cinnamon, sage. So complex and delicious. This was a very nice surprise. (1768 views)
Tasted by mcromain1021 on 5/10/2020 & rated 92 points: Even from an off year, Costanti hits the mark. Tannins have smoothed and integrated nicely. Popped and poured and this was great right out of the gate. Nose was somewhat muted, but strawberry and earth tones were present. This will hold another 4-5 but why wait. Drink now. (1491 views)
Tasted by swapdoc on 5/2/2020: A correct brunello nose on open, fruit forward. Acidity begins to dominate with air, highlighting leather, plums. Second day -- could be an aged barolo. Would wait to drink another year and then enjoy at a single setting. (1204 views)
Tasted by throberts3 on 3/15/2020 & rated 93 points: PnP. Should have decanted based on results. This was still excellent. Great nose, tannins still held up but were smooth. Good long finish. Wish I had more than a single bottle. (1331 views)
Tasted by brasstab on 1/14/2020 & rated 93 points: Elegant but also muscular. Just enough fruit and great tannins to stand up to some 31st anniversary bucatini alla amatriciana (1399 views)
Tasted by djed on 8/25/2019 & rated 91 points: Completly closed on day one, had to open another wine; opens on day two, good wine that presents some nice mature flavors. (1351 views)
Tasted by cincybt on 7/5/2019 & rated 92 points: This aged well and is delicious. Slightly brown on the meniscus but with a garnet hue. Bright berries, cinnamon and dried herbs on the nose. Medium acidity, darker fruit mid-palate with granite and hints of leather in the finish. My last Conti Costanti, but not for long. (1245 views)
Tasted by suilesor25 on 2/17/2019 & rated 89 points: Sadly this one never opened up for us. Little on the nose, one note red fruit in taste. Luckily we had other bottles that showed better. (1445 views)
Tasted by CADomer on 1/19/2019 & rated 93 points: The class of this wine is clearly evident, even in a warmer vintage like 2009. Savory smoked meat, balsamic notes, and black plums dominate with a flutter of perfumed red cherries that hovered over the top to keep me coming back to the glass in search of more. Wonderful clarity and weight that shows me again that I should buy based on producer and not vintage. (1365 views)
Tasted by Okholm on 3/23/2018 flawed bottle: Flawed (2075 views)
Tasted by Rezy13 on 11/21/2017: Tuesday Night Double Blind $50+: Darker crimson core with pale rim, cloudy; olives, cedar, dusty, dried cherry, roses; easy on entry, cinnamon, approachable, earth, higher toned, decent structure, a bit sour on the finish; not a great vintage but ok. (2233 views)
Tasted by AGELVIS on 9/2/2017 & rated 92 points: PNP. Deep maroon color with significant yellowing at the rim. Muddy, tart fruit and green beans on the nose. Smooth palate. Firm tannins on medium long finish. (2421 views)
Tasted by NostraBacchus on 9/1/2017 & rated 93 points: Medium garnet color. Pretty open and radiant notes of plums, menthol, red cherries, red currant, tobacco, some tar, leather, smoke, some orange zest and spices. It's medium-full bodied, doesn't have the depth of the best vintages but more than enough appeal. It has medium+ acidity and medium-high tannin that is a touch dry but not hard. Good length. A very pretty, perfumed and accessible Brunello from this vintage I don't like too much. (2709 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 10/26/2016 & rated 93 points: Bricking, medium red violet color; aromatic, dried cherry, dried berry, chocolate pastille, caramel nose; tasty, tight, dried cherry, caramel, light chocolate pastille palate; needs 2 years; medium-plus finish 93+ points (705 views)
Tasted by RichardP on 4/5/2016 & rated 90 points: Menthol on the nose. On the palate, raspberry, cranberry, cherry, and tobacco, with no noticeable tannins and moderate to good acidity. Average to good value at about $40. (3668 views)
Tasted by Ultimatewinekick_Andreas on 2/5/2016 & rated 90 points: The nose has a dense red fruit core with plums, cherries and some wood glue notes, tobacco and tar.
On the palate we get darker fruit with blueberries but also hints of prune notes and alcohol. The acidity is good but in the finish it gets slightly bitter which affects the total impression.
The balance could be better and the wine gets rather heave despite the good acidity. Still this is a good brunello that requires some food for full enjoyment. (3033 views)
Tasted by Perkyleo33 on 11/29/2015 & rated 88 points: Not worth the price. Just ok. Maybe needed more decanting. Seemed overly alcoholic. (3210 views)
Tasted by sdrucker1000 on 11/26/2015 & rated 90 points: Not particularly memorable but a good example of Brunello from this vintage. A little light on the finish but otherwise solid. (2862 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 11/19/2015: Excellent wine and delightful to drink right now, PNP into stem and started to drink 20-30 minutes later

Sangiovese

SANGIOVESE: (Pronounced "sahn-joh-vhe-se").
Sangiovese - Italy's claim to fame, the pride of Tuscany. Traditionally made, the wines are full of cherry fruit, earth, and cedar. It produces Chianti (Classico), Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montepulciano, Montefalco Rosso, and many others. Sangiovese is also the backbone in many of the acclaimed, modern-styled "Super-Tuscans", where it is blended with Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc) and typically aged in French oak barrels, resulting a wine primed for the international market in the style of a typical California cabernet: oaky, high-alcohol, and a ripe, jammy, fruit-forward profile.[16]

Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. Has many clonal versions, two of which seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine. The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, also known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines. Old vine derived wine is often used in the better versions, needing several years ageing to reach peak. A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province. Recent efforts in California with clones of this variety are very promising, producing medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plumlike flavors and aromas. Among the available clonal versions are R6 and R7, derived from the Montalcino region of Italy, having average productivity/ripening and producing small berries on medium size clusters. R10 and R24 are well-recommended. R23, listed as deriving from the Emilia-Romagna region, has good vigor with medium-small clusters with earlier ripening. R102 derives from the Montepulciano region and reported to have average vigor with moderate productivity that results in higher sugar levels and good acidity from medium-small berries on medium-small clusters. Has synonym name of Nielluccio where grown in Corsica.
