Tasted by Tao on 6/12/2023 & rated 90 points: Gorgeous aroma of wild red fruits! Pure and sweet on the palate! Drinking very nicely now! (776 views)
Tasted by Metro1 on 11/5/2022: Wonderful! (1095 views)
Tasted by Tao on 6/1/2021 & rated 91 points: Always a fan of Réserve de la Comtesse! Dark red in colour and a spectacular nose, sweet riped pure black currant fruits, truly impressive! The palate is quite dense and full and although in my case, not fully opened, but the fruitiness and the weight is rather extraordinary, lacking complexity and yet still very well made! (A half bottle 375ml format) (2294 views)
Tasted by slye on 12/25/2020 & rated 88 points: This was a pleasure to drink, but I wouldn’t say it was memorable. Decanted a couple hours in advance and drunk over a couple more, my first impression was that it was a little tight, but it never opened up as much as I hoped. Still, good fruit, structure and balance and it worked great with the roast beef we were eating. (2457 views)
Tasted by LB88 on 9/26/2020 & rated 92 points: Even better than the last Bottle many years ago. This is now drinking beautifully at its peak, glorious aromatics and resolved tannins. Enjoy now. (2660 views)
Tasted by WineGuyX on 3/19/2020 & rated 91 points: I have always loved this wine and this time is no different. Aromas of creme de cassis, new, vanilla-tinged oak and black fruits as well as a hint of freshly tilled earth. Supple on the palate, this is perfectly mature and shows no signs of old age. Drink now-2023. 91 (2536 views)
Tasted by gcarl on 2/9/2020 & rated 92 points: Opening/decanting/rebottling 2 hrs before blind tasting really put this over the top as a QPR at $19 in 2011. Cellared since then the dark fruit, cedar, green pepper, leather and just a bit of barnyard was very enjoyable and appreciated by other tasters at the event. It was quickly consumed by 20+ participants. I need to look for more recent offerings from this producer. (2358 views)
Tasted by VinoServant on 4/24/2017 & rated 92 points: Opened this wine at 7AM and drank it at 6PM. This wine really improved around 8PM. In general I think the '03 vintage is overrated but maybe the wines just need more time. This wine had a good mix of fruit, earth and spice. (4710 views)
Tasted by felixp on 3/4/2017 & rated 88 points: nice, if inoffensive wine. Good length, well made, but truly lacking any excitement whatsoever.
Might improve a little with time, but I would not hold out great hopes.
Still, if you ignore the price, it is not a bad wine. (4588 views)
Tasted by DugyDog on 1/13/2017 & rated 90 points: I echo another note -- always a solid wine but nothing extraordinary (4302 views)
Tasted by Leomania on 3/18/2016 & rated 90 points: Raspberry, minerality, graphite. Held up really well. (4195 views)
Tasted by vinrhino88 on 11/30/2015 & rated 91 points: Solid, enjoyable wine, not extraordinary but an excellent value. Poured for Thanksgiving (5838 views)
Tasted by WineGuyX on 8/23/2015 & rated 91 points: Great nose! Still bright, fresh and minty. Plenty of sweet black currant and toasty oak. Med-full bodied and quite dense. Still very fresh and youthful tasting. This is a great vintage of this wine. Delicious! Just starting to show tertiary, mature aromas and flavors. Perfect now, should last another 5+ years. 91 df 9.3 (490 views)
Tasted by premiercruclasse on 2/15/2015 & rated 92 points: Consumed at XIV. Not bad. Very strong and complex, with very strong masculine / tobacco flavor that finishes with a very nice and creamy vanilla smoothness. very nice complexity and subtleties. (952 views)
Tasted by Radboy on 12/19/2014 & rated 93 points: Drinking splendidly with life ahead. (4995 views)
Tasted by Radboy on 10/3/2014 & rated 92 points: Terrific as usual. The best QPR in Bordeaux. (5079 views)
Tasted by albrigsr on 9/28/2014 & rated 91 points: This wine punches far above its price and is a classic Bordeaux. I wish I had bought more. (4991 views)
Tasted by stevenjstein on 7/6/2014 & rated 94 points: This bottle delivered far above expectations. Took a little time to open up, but when it did, it revealed great dark fruit, with notes of leather, tobacco, herbs, and pencil lead. Great structure of soft tannins and acidity. At least for certain bottles, this should have time left. (5189 views)
Tasted by gcarl on 6/22/2014 & rated 90 points: At P&P, color in glass did not reveal 10 years of age, other tasters thought it was 5-6 years max. Nose of black fruit, leather, a little cedar, & a little green pepper. Soft tannins and mouth feel. Not earth shattering, but a great QPR at $19 delivered. I'll hold my last bottle for a year or more. (3708 views)
Tasted by dmitchell4 on 6/19/2014 & rated 86 points: Not my favorite. Bitter cherry, harsh tannins, breathing is out did not seem to improve it. (2588 views)
Tasted by albrigsr on 3/16/2014 & rated 90 points: Excellent on P&P! (2912 views)
89 pts (2969 views)
Tasted by The Fickle Palate on 1/25/2014: Intense dark colour with a slight purple tinge, lots of crushed black cherry, dense, rich cassis and chocolate, sweet smoke, tobacco and pencil shavings. Ripe and plummy texture, concentrated blackcurrants and violet. The tannin has softened out but still retains some grip, the finish is laced with chocolate and sour cherry but there is an underlying quinine-style bitterness which sends the length slightly off-kilter. A rich, punchy, classic Bordeaux but just lacking in smoothness and elegance. **** (2637 views)
Tasted by avp on 1/12/2014: Blackcurrant and strawberry nose with bell pepper, pencil shavings and coffee beans. Some diacetyl character at first but that settled after a while.
Medium bodied palate with sweet touch to the ripe fruit, smooth tannins and balanced acidity. Cassis, plums, salt liquorice and coffee. Long finish.
Good stuff. Drinking already rather well. Balanced for the vintage. (3192 views)
Tasted by Tao on 1/4/2014 & rated 90 points: Deep deep ruby in colour! Nose of dark fruits and roast coffee beans, smoky!! Quite smooth on the palate, mouthful of dark fruits with a hint of leather, a touch of greenness, still a little tannins left! Actually, it is quite ready, quite foursquare, lacking a bit of Lalande distinctive charm dare I say!! (2843 views)

(PICHON-LALANDE Reserve de la Comtesse) Bordeaux Magnum SPECIAL Dear Friends, As a Friday send-off, we bid you adieu with two magnums at prices that are tough to pass up. Nearly all of us have party occasions where we want to open a high quality magnum of Bordeaux, leave it on the table for everyone to enjoy and not worry about the last drop of a precious classified growth being mistreated by a unworthy gullet - both of these fit the bill and they are quite excellent for what they are. I’ve had both several times in party and non-party settings and they are just what the doctor ordered when tasting notes are not the priority but the event itself is the star of the show. When I was offered this parcel for a price that was almost laughable (both nearly 50% off in this format), I knew it was something most of you would be very happy to stock up on. Both have been stored under ideal conditions (56 degrees) since release: 2003 Pichon Lalande “Reserve de la Comtesse 1.5lt (IWC/NR) STRICT LIMIT 6/person This is the second wine of Pichon Lalande and it is especially delightful, showing far more of the character that Parker saw in his original barrel review, which I’ve cut and pasted below - not sure what he tasted from 750ml when he gave this 88pts but it’s not what’s in the magnum (the magnums are bottled from the best stock on a separate bottling run so I find his bottle review curious. The magnums are also nearly three times the price of the 750s). I brought two of these to a party last month and both were quickly drained by knowledgeable palates that couldn’t believe how delicious the wine was. This is my new go-to magnum when I need something to satisfy a crowd: 2003 Chateau Valrose “Cuvee Alienor” (WA/NR)(IWC86-89) STRICT LIMIT 6/person The Cuvee Alienor is just a crazy buy on a 2003 Bordeaux, especially from St. Estephe (where the recently anointed 100pt Montrose and 99pt Cos d’ Estournel hail from). The magnums are also bottled from the Chateau’s best stock: Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Bord8720 Bord8710

This is the second wine of 2. Cru Classé Chateau Pichon Longeville Comtesse de Lalande of Pauillac.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Pauillac

Read more detailed information about Pauillac Looking full onto the river from the earliest days, with an important port activity, traces of which go back to ancient times (shipment of bronze as long ago as 2000 B.C.), Pauillac's life has always been intimately linked to the history of wine. Although port activities were at the root of its prosperity, Pauillac had to wait until the eighteenth century when Bordeaux ceased to hold its privileged position to become a wine port. The town then became the natural outlet for the wine production of neighbouring cantons before reaching its zenith in a period when the vineyards were exceptionally prosperous.

The characteristic of the Pauillac terroir is its exceptional relief: the many undulating ridges make it unique morphologically speaking. Highly favourable conditions facilitate the dissection of the layer of gravel. This thin, Garonne gravel from whose very poverty springs great richness, has an extremely effective natural drainage.

With their velvet red colour with a hint of amber, the wines from the Pauillac appellation, full-bodied and rich in tannin, are vigorous. Powerful when young, their aromas of red fruits (black-currant, raspberry) or flowers (violets, roses, irises) melt with the passing of time into a bouquet which is long in the mouth.
Rich and complex, the wines of Pauillac deserve to be laid down for a little longer.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)

In order to have the right to the Pauillac appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the commune of Pauillac and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cissac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Sauveur, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
