Community Tasting Notes (average 96.2 pts. and median of 96 pts. in 73 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Geaux Tigers on 4/28/2024 & rated 99 points: 3 hr double decant and this was ready to go. My prior notes are still on point, so I won’t repeat them.

There is nary a flaw in this wine, yet I think it still gets better with more age, hence ‘only’ a 99 today. If you put a checklist together of things you want in a 12 yr old Napa great, this would literally check every, single, box. Mrs Geaux loved this one too. Was supposed to be paired with filets, but the wine ran out before the filets were done.

This wine feels like it hit the zone and isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. I’ve got a few more which I’m excited to have. (215 views)
Tasted by Cablover1982 on 3/17/2024 & rated 98 points: Part of a great evening with @Ian Leath and @Shine J. This was very close in my opinion to the O’Shaughnessy Veeder ‘15. I felt like one thing that set it apart for me was the weight and slight Pritchard Hill depth. It was close. Red and black fruits, floral, iron, rock dust, tobacco, dark chocolate notes. Nice finish.  Tasted by Cablover1982 on 12/28/2023 & rated 97 points: This ‘12 took the whole dinner to fully express itself the best. Was tannic, tight, leathery, taut and shy for several hours. With 5 plus hours, gorgeous reddish dark fruit emerged, wine softened up, added some red iron, earth, florals and velvety tannins. I’ll hold my last bottle for a bit. Cheers! (1520 views)
Tasted by A&C on 12/24/2023 & rated 98 points: Took this Hexameter to Christmas Eve dinner at my parents. Wow!! An incredible wine. Big, bold, complex, and the fruit is perfect at this moment. The wine is at its pinnacle. I don't think it will get better. Magnificent juice!! Merry Christmas!! (1406 views)
Tasted by JMellet on 12/10/2023 & rated 100 points: Simply and very easily one of the greatest wines ever! (1499 views)
Tasted by jsmorris707 on 10/20/2023 & rated 96 points: Similar to prior notes after a 2 hour double decant; outstanding, drink or hold (1682 views)
Tasted by robertek on 7/28/2023 & rated 97 points: Ok this was actaully a bottle of Hexameter that I mistakenly had entered as an Ovid. Nevertheless brilliant nose and brilliant wine. (1898 views)
Tasted by Cablover1982 on 7/13/2023 & rated 99 points: 3 hour decant. Dark red to magenta. Flawless balance of fruit, acid and tannins. Oak is so well integrated, tannins are nice and velvety. Incredible and complex notes of reddish volcanic earth, roasted plums, dark cherries, dark chocolate, mocha, cigar wrapper, melted licorice candy and iron. With time more dried herbs notes were prominent with slightly brooding fruit. Glad I have 3 more of these. (1857 views)
Tasted by jsmorris707 on 7/3/2023 & rated 96 points: Similar to prior notes after a 2 hour double decant; outstanding, drink or hold (1901 views)
Tasted by sfwinelover1 on 3/27/2023: Second of three from an auction lot about 3 and a half years ago. The first, enjoyed with CT friends csimm (the first time I met him), his partner, and CT friend WBW (the second time I met him) on the eve of the world shutting down just over 3 years ago. I was bowled over by this and have thought about it often since, particularly as I’ve bumped up my wine spend, wondering if I’d find this as transcendent as the earlier bottle; I did. Overall, a very similar tasting experience, with the wine roaring out of the bottle, yet not undrinkably so, with the fruit, tannins and acidity all jostling but more or less balanced, but after about 2 hours, this became absolutely stunning, swapping just a bit of intensity for depth, suppleness, balance and elegance. Other than not quaffing this at a Michelin starred restaurant, although it was just as awesome with my loin lamb chops as the fare at Aziza, the main difference was that I was able to enjoy this over 3 nights in a leisurely way at my house rather than at a 2 hour restaurant meal, and the wine held up immaculately, making me think that this is early peak drinking window at most, and is more likely to improve than decline over the next several years, then easily last a decade going strong thereafter (I’m extending my drinking window by 7 years). I had the ‘08, which was wonderful but just a step below this, a couple of years ago, and have since purchased a ‘10 and several ‘14s (and I may be about to purchase a ‘05 as well); if they’re close to as good, I’ll feel richly rewarded. This is sure to be a welcome guest at any setting, even one with wines far dearer. Great job, Andy Erickson. How apropos that this is my 700th TN. 99 if scoring. (2125 views)
Tasted by jsmorris707 on 2/28/2023 & rated 97 points: Similar to prior notes after a 2.5 hour double decant; outstanding, drink or hold (2171 views)
Tasted by Quiet Lion on 2/24/2023 & rated 97 points: Pop and pour. Lovely balance, deep intensity with red and black fruit and herbs. Earthy, balanced, long finish. I love these. (1924 views)
Tasted by A&C on 2/24/2023 & rated 95 points: Took this 2012 Ovid Hexameter to Collin & Sarah's dinner party. It is coming right into its own. It did take about an hour to open up, but once it did, it was incredibly well-made and richly balanced. It was delicious and sneaky rich. It paired incredibly well with the homemade radiotore pasta and short-rib ragu. We had quite the line up with the 2012 Ovid Hexameter, a 2007 Alpha Omega, a 2005 Dal Forno Romano Valpolicella, and a 20016 Mario Ecolina Terre Sicilane. A great night with fun friends, delicious food, and great wine. Cheers!! (1831 views)
Tasted by Bcw1989 on 2/4/2023 & rated 96 points: A solid Napa Valley Cabernet. Dark black inky look to it. Tannins have slowed down and the fruits have really began to shine in this vintage. Finish was an impressive 30 seconds or longer. Drank with food-red meat! Opened up nicely about an hour after it was breathing. Very enjoyable experience. (1812 views)
Tasted by Bcw1989 on 1/25/2023 & rated 96 points: Solid Ovid wine. Deep dark black look to this wine. Nose was full of lush red ripe fruits. Tannins were still very present. Great mouthfeel. A pleasure to drink with food or on its own. As the night wore on, this 2012 Ovid really started to show itself. Drink now or keep it around for another 5-10 years! (1729 views)
Tasted by Geaux Tigers on 10/28/2022 & rated 98 points: Opened and into a decanter with a plan for a 4 hr decant. Impatience is a strength when it comes to great wine, so tried a glass at 3 hrs because, well, why not? Here’s why not—it wasn’t ready. Flawless mouthfeel, great body and flow front to back but it was locked up.

The 4 hr key opened the lock and oh my! Black as night, crimson edges, but no bricking, thin legs.

Nose-wet rock, pine forest, eucalyptus, black peppercorn, green olive, iron, spice, cinnamon

Palate-a long mineral streak and backbone carrying into a medium length finish, black and red cherry, steeped black tea, a menagerie of other stuff I can’t pinpoint but boy does it work, seemingly restrained but powerful, yet not hot in any way. Secondaries have overtaken the fruit, at least for this bottle.

Oak and tannin resolved into lovely structure to carry all the pieces and parts. Not sure how to score this, I can’t find flaws after 4 hrs, but the ‘it’ factor seemed to be missing from the last bottle, which is a quite subjective way to say a very subjective 98. (1883 views)
Tasted by AaronMaxwell on 10/18/2022 & rated 96 points: Best bottle of this I’ve had yet. From PnP, it was great and only got better. Green olives, forest floor, and balance. Drink now! (1911 views)
Tasted by jsmorris707 on 6/18/2022 & rated 96 points: Similar to prior note after a 2 hour double decant; outstanding, drink or hold (2517 views)
Tasted by EM_MB on 4/22/2022 & rated 95 points: Similar to my Sept notes. 9 hour slow ox followed by quick double decant then back to bottle to bring to restaurant. Singing from the first glass on…tannins fully integrated yet present, still plenty of fruit, no rush to drink but well into its window. Just a stunning and IMO underrated wine. (2223 views)
Tasted by DWStyle on 3/27/2022 & rated 94 points: Magnum. Two hr double decant, big and juicy, still very powerful has several years to go. (2339 views)
Tasted by jsmorris707 on 3/18/2022 & rated 95 points: From a new lot, decanted at the restaurant. Similar to prior notes, but took all meal to finally open up; outstanding, but needs the 2 hour decant (or perhaps this new lot is "younger") (2087 views)
Tasted by jsmorris707 on 2/19/2022 & rated 99 points: Similar to prior notes after double decanting for 2 hrs; outstanding, near perfection, drink or hold. (2425 views)
Tasted by gteran76 on 1/28/2022 & rated 96 points: Opened 5 hours prior and left inside the cellar. Double decanted (quick) before leaving to the restaurant (about 1 hour prior consumption).

The wine is dark ruby, bold, HEAVY, long legs, easy to tell it’s a Napa wine but super refined and complex. This wine is entering its PRIME TIME IMO, the finish is paradisiac and I don’t want this to end…….

Had it with churrasco medium rare and fries. (1969 views)
Tasted by SAS54 on 11/25/2021 & rated 97 points: My brother-in-law asked for a bottle of wine that was both fruity and peppery, with a scoshe of age. I grabbed the Ovid. Apparently knocked it out of the park - and the wine was good too. Paired well with cheese, and was a perfect mid-day PT Thangsgiving treat. (1851 views)
Tasted by EM_MB on 9/11/2021 & rated 95 points: 9 hour slow ox followed by flash decant. Tannins mellowed but still tight for first few glasses. Great wine but will improve with some more age. Hold. (1944 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
